Kylie Minogue

I had no idea this was a cover.
It's kind of in a grey area as to whether it's a cover or not, imo. Although Megan B Smith did record a MV for "I'm So High," it's mentioned in its description that Megan and her band never ended up getting signed, so it's safe to assume that it was never released. Guy Chambers then presented it to Kylie and Kylie re-wrote sections of the track before releasing herself.

It's in the same zone as "Nothing Fails", "Still Standing" and "Nothing Good About This Goodbye", songs written by the songwriter for their own projects that went unreleased but then presented to another active artist to develop and/or record.

I saw this post in the SAW thread but my answer is more just about Kylie so I pasted it here instead:

I would love a Kylie PWL
singles boxset but don’t know how likely this is now that she owns the rights to her PWL catalogue.
I may be in the minority but after those 2018(?) deluxe editions of her PWL albums were released, I would MUCH prefer a singles boxset for her Parlophone material especially if they include a bonus disc with the “unreleased” (see: leaked) tracks properly remastered.

I want to live in a parrallel universe where Disco Down was the lead from Light Years and enjoyed Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’s success. Nothing against Spinning Around but it’s never really grabbed me. Disco Down, however remains my favourite Kylie song of all time. Pure sparkling melancholic bliss.

I feel the same. I like Spinning Around but it’s far from being one of her greats.

But I admit it is the perfect single. The general public click with it as it’s catchy, the video is perfect and the hotpants generated the necessary media buzz for it. It was a perfect campaign.

The video is a serve, hands down. A flawlessly executed moment. Many a night have I wanted to recreate her reclining on the bar top.

"Disco Down" is decent enough, but it could've never did what "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" did. Very few songs can do what "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" did.

Apparently, it was an early favorite for lead single before Kylie recorded "Spinning Around." Thankfully, "Spinning Around" came along.

Is there substance to this though?

It must have been very, very early on in the recording process if it went from first single potential to not even being a single.

Apparently, it was then the original choice for the second single before they decided on "On A Night Like This" instead. Despite that, it was still considered for single release at some point, with Light Years apparently featured a sticker that said "Including the singles" and included "Under The Influence Of Love" amongst them.

I take those with a pinch of salt. The stickers are knocked up by someone in the graphics department and I think they just cherry pick a song title that's mentioned in the press release if there isn't a confirmed singles plan at the time of locking in the sticker designs.

While I think "Disco Down" would have smashed, "Spinning Around" has the self-referential lyrics that make it the perfect comeback single within the Kylie narrative.
