Kylie Minogue

Yes, there's a promo interview CD for Light Years and there's some audio clips of her introducing songs and there is one for Under the Influence:

Oh well, straight from the horses mouth, so to speak. That settles that discussion.

"Under the Influence" is a much snappier title than the full line to be fair. I wonder if it was considered a Plan B if the heavier, clubbier "On a Night Like This" hadn't landed well. Also, there's every possibility that Chrysalis hadn't settled on "Kids" being a single for Robbie yet, so maybe they were keeping their options open - those interview discs are recorded around the same time the interviews are done for the monthly magazines published before the album is out.

It does seem bizarre that they would risk doubling-down on the retro sound and throwing out a Barry White cover version as a single while they were aiming to update Kylie for 2000, especially when "Disco Down" was right there.

All this talk of Light Years has got me listening to the album and the On a Night Like This remixes...

Under The Influence is on par with Please Stay though in terms of basic bop. Can’t imagine the campaign being too different.
I always thought Under the Influence would be fun to see Kylie perform live. I prefer it to Please Stay to be honest.
I still think Please Stay is one of Kylie's all time underrated singles. Probably my 2nd favourite these days of all the Light Years singles. Love the Metro remix of it too:

I love "Please Stay", especially the slightly-beefier single mix that they used on Ultimate Kylie.

It gets so much dismissal largely because of the foreign-market-single that came out there and didn't come out here in the UK, which really isn't fair. People forget that the UK music scene in 2000 only allowed one person to be knowingly winking and unapologetically camp and that person was Robbie Williams who'd released a single interpolating "I Will Survive" the same week.

"Please Stay" just needed more of the first half of the video (where it was doing a servicable Austin Powers pastiche) and less of the second half (Poundland "Don't Tell Me" at the employee hangout bar from Jaws 3D) to not feel like it was a bit of an afterthought single to hit the Christmas market following the 1-2 punch of "On A Night Like This" and "Kids" in quick succession that Autumn. "Disco Down" shoulda been the Christmas single, then "Please Stay" as a fifth one at the time of the tour the following spring.

Yes, often wonder had if Please Stay was released say early 2001 than opposed to the Christmas market, if it would have peaked higher. Still, #10 not too shabby and the Light Years singles run gave Kylie her best back to back run of top 10 hits Rhythm Of Love a decade before.
