Kylie Minogue

he / him
I get that Spinning Around is the perfect comeback song but that one's also very camp - did they not think that?
It's a Kylie album. Every track is camp, but particularly on Light Years. Even "Kids," the straightest track on Light Years, is camp.

In contrast, "Spinning Around" is significantly less camp than the likes of "Koochachoo," "Loveboat," "So Now Goodbye" and "Under The Influence Of Love."

Either way, Kylie had the last laugh because Your Disco Needs You is a complete staple in UK gay clubs. I've heard it at least once pretty much every single night I've been out in the past.

I do reluctantly see the logic of them wanting to make the most on the investment by ensuring mainstream success because they knew they could just throw a bit of pink glitter at it and the gays would flock, but the cynicism of it combined with the prioritising of the demographic who didn't stick by her is annoying.

It's the equivalent of days out to interesting places being ruined by them gearing it all towards families with children and you're like, "get them to fuck off and we'll climb on/swing from/play with it all! And we won't shit in it."

Please Stay is a great Kylie song and doesn't deserve to be remembered as the straight-pandering single selection of the suits.

Always loved the video and everything other than the chorus which still sounds like a missed opportunity 20+ years later. But I agree with you on Kids.... which seemed limp even at the time of release.

(Still love the album all the same!)

At the time Spinning Around wasn’t that camp. It was quite funky/slinky compared to the pure pop that was around at the time.
It’s still not that camp. It’s just a pop song, a great one but I wouldn’t classify it or even “On A Night Like This” as camp as “Your Disco…” (or even “Kids” ddd).

Please Stay is a great Kylie song and doesn't deserve to be remembered as the straight-pandering single selection of the suits.

100%, I’m not always in the mood for it but I think it’s an adorable song. Pop fluff with the Latin feel, I love.

I love Please Stay. Gorgeous pop song that plays to Kylie's strength of capturing regret and sadness in a pop song.

I don't really consider Spinning Around and On a Night Like This camp. There are definite elements of camp on Light Years, but like many of Kylie's projects, the camp is sporadic and not overwhelming. I love Light Years because it has such variety.

It's so nice to see so many of us loving Please Stay. An total and utter Kylie gem. She looked absolutely beautiful in the music video too:

I'm sure we've discussed this before, but is the rap that was in some versions of Cruise Control actually written for the song or just another one pasted in? It feels more cut and paste than the Ludacris one that was meant to be on Chocolate (and that should have remained).

It was a cut-and-paste job from Sean Paul's "Gimme the Light" because Parlophone wanted to hear it with a rap. It was mistakenly used for the b-side to RBW instead of the version on the US pressings of Body Language. It apparently cost them a pretty penny to straighten out.
