Kylie singles rate

Who the hell was Keith Washington though?!

He was one of those US soul balladeers in the Alexander O'Neal mode who had just had a big(ish) hit over there with the original of Kissing You (later covered by Des'ree). As Peter Waterman told it at the time (on Radio 1), at a recording session for the album Kylie had her bag of current fave records in it and Kissing You was there. Waterman said, wow you like this guy? Do you want to do a duet with him, because I can arrange it? Kylie was obviously keen, and so that's how it happened.

I've got his CD with the Kissing You track on it.

I feel very young reading through this thread.

By the way, why wasn't "Your Disco Needs You" included? It's one of my favorite singles of hers, and actually one of the only ones that I bought a physical copy of.

Wow at that spambot. Not trying to sell me fake Louis Vuitton handbags and computer viruses even though its exactly what the thread creator first posted.

The organiser of this said UK singles and Disco was a German/Australian exclusive.

Oh, UK only, I see. Must have been a great conversation back then. "Want another UK number one?" - "No, thanks, let's do a German exclusive."

I bet it's Kids - does anyone actually like that song?

I gave it an 8.
But then, apart from one song I don't think I rated anything below 6.

I gave it an 8 as well. It's her best record of the last decade. But the she's released mostly crap since the mid 90's.

Was 'Where The Wild Roses Grow' on the list? I would have scored that realy highly but don't remember seeing it.

I gave quite a varied selection of scores - a few 10s for the absolute classics and a few 1s for songs that I've never been able to stand.

I did rate her later PWL output a lot higher than most people probably did. I still maintain that Let's Get To It is an underrated masterpiece!

Her later PWL output was some of the greatest pop music ever produced. A succession of 9's and 10'd from me from 'Better The Devil' to 'Finer Feelings' mostly downhill from there apart from 'Confide In Me' and 'Put Yourself In My Place'.

I have a horrible feeling about how this is going to go. Nothing major has bene dropped yet (ALthough I love 'If You Were With Me Now' and 'Especially for You is clearly a stone cold classic) but seeing as any sane person knows that ALL of her best records come from the early 90's if the top 10 is made up of crap from the 00's I shall scream!!!

If the Spinning Around album is post-2000, then all of my favorites are from 2000 onwards. Though obviously she's also released some horribly bland singles since then.

I've never liked Give Me Just A Little More Time. It doesn't 'sound' to me like a Kylie song and her voice sounds so strained and shouty on it. Again I couldn't believe it's high chart position. It still gets the odd spin on Magic (or Heart??).

I have to admit I forgot to include Where The Wild Roses Grow oops. I realised after Id recieved quite a lot of responces and thought it wouldn't be fair to then add it in.

45. Celebration 4/10
44. Tears On My Pillow 4.52/10
43. If You Were With Me Now 5.39/10
42. Especially For You 5.5/10
41. Give Me Just A Little More Time 5.6/10
40. The Locomotion 5.82/10

Released as Kylies 3rd single in the UK and her 3rd top 2 hit I was quite surprised that this song has gone out so early on as although it is a cover it is considered a bit of a Kylie classic. Interestingly enough all 4 of Kylies cover version are out in the first 6 songs.

Interesting that we have had arguably her least successful single followed by 4 of her biggest hits go out already. The Locomotion was her biggest US hit and was a massive hit here but even those of us who were around at the time probably remember the other hits more fondly.

Locomotion, Tears On My Pillow and Especially For You were bigger hits but I have more affection for tracks like Wouldn't Change A Thing, Got To Be Certain and Never Too Late (which weren't exactly flops come to think of it)

=39. Word Is Out 6/10
=39. Never Too Late 6/10

Word Is Out was the lead single from kylies 4th Album, Lets Get To It and the 3rd single to appear on this list. It reached number 19 in 1991 and became Kylies first single not to reach the top 10 in the UK.
.
Never Too Late was the 3rd single from Kylies 2nd album, Enjoy Yourself. It reached number 4 in 1989 and was Kylies first song not to reach the top 2.

Nooo! Not Word Is Out!

Call me crazy but I rated this a 10 and it's possibly in my all-time Kylie top 10. I can see why people didn't like it as it was such a departure from the SAW sound but I've always loved it. I think it's really funky and summery and I love her fishnet hooker look in the video and the appearance of a pre-fame Davina McCall (which always amused my boyfriend no end!)

With the exception of Especially For You (which is a pop classic, people!), all the ones so far deserve to be at the bottom end; the whole Let's Get To It era was a mess (a necessary one perhaps, as she was slowly breaking free from the SAW treadmill both in spirit and literally, with different writers etc) and Finer Feelings was the only really decent single from that album. Never Too Late would have suited someone like Sonia much better; perfectly nice and well crafted but it seemed a backwards step to release it after the perfect pop of Enjoy Yourself's first two singles.

My heart sank when I first heard 'word is out', as the year previous had the most amazing run of singles of any pop artist ever-'better the devil' to 'shocked' and it just killed her what I saw as finally becoming a credible adult pop act stone dead. The' word is out' video made her look laughable and trying too hard and it took until 'confide' for the public to take her seriously again. It was so annoying as she could have evolved into a real club diva post 'rhythm of love' as the likes of 'what do I have to do' were just awesome pop/club moments.
