La la la la vie en rose - The Agnes Discography Rate (#27)

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by Empty Shoebox, Jul 1, 2019.

  1. I had never seen the video to Kick Back Relax. The total lack of color for a song so intentionally sweet and vibrant...

  2. Kick Back Relax was a single?

  3. I still haven't decided if Kick Back Relax is decent or complete shit. Surely Champion is better.

  4. Good news! @Empty Shoebox will be back in the mix with the next elimination!

    Bad news: Sadly it’s someone’s 11.

  5. Yes, I have returned to be the baddie again.

  6. Watch it be Emotional.

    [watches some more]

    [watches slightly more intensely]

Oh wait crap I need to do something.

    I must step back in.

As I seem to be the bearer of bad news in this rate.

    Yes, it's that time.

    An eleven falls.

    I Believe In You
    Average: 6.76

    High scores: 11 x 1 (@əʊæ / @Untitled), 9.3 x 1 (@berserkboi)
    Low scores: 3 x 1 (@iheartpoptarts), 3.5 x 1 (@Lost Boy), 3.75 x 1 (@CasuallyCrazed)

    Chart positions: N/A

So @əʊæ is the first to lose their eleven. Unless you count any person (or persons) who didn't use theirs. Did anyone? That's a question to be answered at a later date.

Looking through reviews of the album, not many of them mention this song (maybe SvD did, but they have a paywall). Kristianstadsbladet described it as having 'stötiga baspianogångar' or 'messy bass piano sections' according to Norsteds ordbok.

Anyway, composers Ulf Lindström and Johan Ekhé refer to themselves as 'Ghost'. They have a little history, but perhaps their most commercially successful song is called 'Keep This Fire Burning'

Production and co-writing credits (with the other Ms. Carlsson and a Danish man called Remee).

Watch out for the Robyn Carlsson rate, coming to this forum, a short time from now.

Let's see what people who don't live in Kristianstad have to say.

@iheartpoptarts opens our commentary today, but is less than complimentary:
'A surprisingly lacklustre album opener. The melodies are just so not there.' - 3.0

@DJHazey is a little disappointed as well, but in a different way:
'Had it marked as a song I liked alot years ago, but it's not quite popping off like I expected. The harmonica? bit is the most memorable element of it for me.' - 7.0

    @berserkboi's voyage of discovery continues:
'I like urban-tinged production for Agnes! Versatile queen!' - 9.3

@Sprockrooster also falls into the 'not one hundred percent impressed' category:
'Starting your album with a poor ballad is not a good look.' - 5.0

    @Verandi doesn't mess about:
'Nice verses, the chorus tho is a bit shit.' - 6.0

And unfortunately @əʊæ didn't send us any commentary, so @danmharrow gets the last word:
'A clear step up from album 1, on the first track already' - 7.5

And I can't find a cover or a live performance or anything, so we'll have to close with this:

So what will happen with our next elimination? It's been a while since I was the lowest scorer, hasn't it?

  8. But wow what a moment.

  9. Shoutout to Negin Djafari, co-composer of “I Believe In You,” whose handiwork can be found on many a bop... whether as a songwriter:

    Or as the featured vocalist:

Or even as the lead artist:

  10. In the UK we didn’t get that version. We got this instead:

(I low-key prefer this version just because Beverley really serves vocals on it.)

  11. Between this and Kick Back Relax I think I had my daily fair share of terrible videos ddd

  12. Well, I Believe In You is the biggest shock elimination for me so far. Stronger is bad, but it was the best track on it.

  13. [IMG]
I could've given my 11 to Human Touch or Into The Sun but why do that when I can support a song no one else cares for, huh?

  14. Today marks another momentous occasion.

    The streak is over.

    Nothing Else Matters
    Average score: 6.78
    High score: 9.6 x 1 (@berserkboi)
    Low score: 5 x 7 (@Ana Raquel, @Empty Shoebox, @əʊæ, @Hurricane Drunk, @iheartpoptarts, @Lost Boy, @Reboot)

And Veritas finally loses a song. But as you can see, since ~ 1/3 of the voters gave it a 5, it probably shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that this is the one that vacates first. Sadly, it’s not a Metallica cover.

Johan Lindqvist from Göteborgs-Posten wrote that Agnes “sings with confidence and exciting things happen when her powerful R&B voice wrestles with the machinery.” And Camila Diaz from Gaffa added that “Nothing Else Matters” will be “the soundtrack to your next love story.”

Well…. Probably not for this group.

    Maybe for @berserkboi though?:
“Though not exactly what I would want from Agnes, this is very well done!” - 9.6

Antiballadjustice comes out in full force and @abael leads the charge:
“This, despite being a ballad, started strong but it seems to stall at what seems to be the chorus, but is actually the other half of the track.” - 6.0

    @danmharrow is here with backup:
“This was her best album for ballads. It’s pretty.” - 6.5

At least @Verandi puts some R-E-S-P-E-C-T on the commentary:
“The obligatory closing ballad. Nice strings, beautiful strings.” - 6.0

    And @DJHazey displays some evolution:
“Sneaky favorite because it’s so low-key in its delivery and very straight-forward, kind of bucking the trend in what I’d want in a catchy pop song. Somehow I gave it a 6 the first time around rating it, but this has definitely been a slow-burner. There’s something so devastating about its simple approach because of the desperate nature of her voice.” - 9.0

  15. The excluded 14th one is this so I'm not mad about it.

    nn you really should have

Lost Boy, WowWowWowWow and əʊæ like this.
  16. Hmm, definitely not the first Veritas song I would've cut. That would've been Amazing, Watching It Burn, or Heart Rate.

Really I only have a few 6s left and then it's 7 and up, sop I'm rooting for 6-8 scores to go, because I don't generally listen to those as much.

  17. Sadly???

  18. Ya never know!
*actually I suppose in this case we do know*

  19. The next elimination will be delayed slightly because I need to do PJ00s and PJRETRO.

  20. Once you finish those contests @Empty Shoebox I’m gonna need a reference point for the thread title.
