Lady Gaga - Harlequin

This is already Born This Way.

Born This Way is definitely up there with those great albums. But I meant another body of work that reestablishes her unique sense of artistry the same way those albums did for their artists. An album that showcases her musicianship in a fresh way. Something that would solidify her place at the table with those girls. That moment.

I have enjoyed ARTPOP, Joanne, and Chromatica but she is capable of much better. The little snippets we've heard so far are promising so I'm radically optimistic.

I can't believe we are still talking about RedOne in 2024. She exhausted his talent after he delivered the same song many different times (Pokerface, Bad Romance, Judas, Scheiße, etc).

What’s annoying is that she could truly work with anyone she wanted. Like there’s so many producers out there that would help elevate her sound. Maybe she only wants to stick to the group she’s created over the years. Or maybe she doesn’t even know who the best producers are in the game right now.

In that podcast RedOne did with Quincy Jones, which is a great listen, it's easy to read between the lines and see that as Gaga became more successful she started to have ideas that did not fit RedOne's narrow ideas of what a pop song should be. He talks about the need for songs to sound "global", and singable even if you don't speak English - reading between the lines, simple lyrically, not at all esoteric.
He, for example, famously anecdotally only contributed the "Oh - oh - oh - oh - oh" in Bad Romance. So, I imagine songs like "Judas" and "Scheiße" challenged that principle which is probably why he shaded them and why that was their last big collaboration.

Amusing to me then that Gypsy is one of their last co-writes, a song where she literally rattles off a bunch of names of cities and countries lolll.

Still confused how the duo that produced Scheiße came up with Angel Down. Talk about versatility

He had very little to do with both aside from taking her direction. He has outright said he doesn’t like “Scheiße”, and in general does not seem to have any affinity for his work with Gaga after The Fame Monster, apparently because she was too controlling. And I think all he did on “Angel Down” was play guitar on the worktape, because Gaga said she originally wrote that song herself in 2013 dd

I just feel like Gaga and RedOne took each other as far as they could go, without it getting super stale.
Those songs exist in a certain context that's not going to be repeated. Not to mention that we should want popstars to release music that doesn't necessarily line up with our personal tastes. I want the music to surprise me. I mean, I like fucking Fun Tonight, but I know that's not the quality of material that she should be delivering.

The fact that Scheisse probably has his best production of any of their tracks too!

I remember briefly that someone here said before that they disliked that song.

It really would be genuinely fascinating to see how an old school Gaga song would do on the charts in 2024 though. Not that I think it would be feasible even if she wanted to obv. Just genuinely curious.

The albums just going to be a darker version of Chromatica, I would bet.

Curious how Harlequin will be judged when more time has passed from the film. Was so smart not to just call it “joker 2 the soundtrack”.
