Lady Gaga - Mayhem

When we got "Hold My Hand" without any other music in sight I white knuckled my stan goggles and told myself "It's a classic big 80s anthem that Gaga always does best, it's just the production and visuals that suck!" As soon as Chromatica Ball and the promise of new music arrived, that evaporated and I realized it was just not my cup of tea. When it comes on in a restaurant or on my cousin's wedding playlist and people look at me, resident Gaga stan, I literally cringe.

"Die with a Smile" and "Happy Mistake" on the other hand were both pretty immediately good (the latter immediately great) to my ears. I think the critique that the former is more standard or "faceless" than the average Gaga hit is more or less correct. It does sound like Bruno wrote it and she jumped on. But the melody, sentiment, vocals, instrumentation, all of it sells it for me in spite of that.

"Happy Mistake" on the other hand deserved to have been on Chromatica or Mayhem. It's better than half of the former and sonically closer to Disease than DWAS is (it totally fits the vibe of the Disease acoustic versions). I think it's one of her strongest ballads and nothing about her Trojan Horsing show tunes via Harlequin can change that.

I remember watching the Oscars with a friend of mine who is a LM and he was so mad when RRR beat Hold My Hands for best original song and swore it was robbed. I was like, you thought that song was robbed? It was an honor it was even nominated.

An alternate artwork CD with a poster?! This edition was made for my zero vinyl owning but J-Pop CD collecting ass. I curse this being UK exclusive but might get my friend in London to buy it for me and just hoard it for whenever we see each other sometime in the coming year dd

Let me bookmark this, thank you!
If it's the same as the Target CD edition (and I think it is, because the Target and HMV vinyl exclusives are the same), then the "bonus poster" in the title might be a mistake. The Target exclusive CD has a bonus track and alternate cover, but the poster seems to be only with the vinyl. Both Fnac and Discoteca Laziale are stocking this CD edition, and neither of their listings mention a poster.

Happy to be proven wrong though!

Even if my opinions don’t align with everyone’s, I can usually at least see where y’all are coming from but the disdain for Hold My Hand I do not get ddd. For a woman who for whatever reason does not excel at ballads it’s one of the better ones. I think she looks great in the video and it met the assignment for what it needed to be. Of her songs that were actually singles - not to be confused with non singles that should have been! - it’s probably the one I most think should have smashed for her.

I will say some very clumsy lyrics. That bridge is word salad.

Exciting that it’s in the realm of possibility they’ll achieve this and dethrone Dance Monkey

Ok lemme start streaming this song again real quick because I really need for them to achieve this (and they most likely will).

Also, several people have mentioned by now that Mayhem will open with huge streaming because DWAS has been streamed so many times. Can someone explain to me how this works? Weren't those all streamed from the DWAS single? Does adding a single that has been released months ago to a NEW album, instantly convert all of those old streams into... new streams? Surely I'm confused?

edit: omg I think you guys just mean that because the song is so popular, and from March whatever onwards it'll be part of Mayhem, Mayhem will pick up the streams (for one song, at least) that DWAS (the single) is now getting. Is that it?

I think ‘Hold My Hand’ is… fine, in the same way I think ‘Shallow’ is fine and ‘Die with a Smile’ is *grits teeth* fine.

I’m more than happy to admit that years of stanning and bearing witness to what she’s capable of ends up resulting in an overall rejection of this kind of lane for her, even if I think she’s evidently too talented to lend her hand to something that fails upon every metric it exists within.

Her pen is generally good enough whether it’s eye-wateringly corny big-budget ballads, soft-rock pastiche or whatever was going on during A Star is Born… I just have the battle scars from 14 years on this forum to act as if it’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard because I know what she’s capable of.
