Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

What we got in the video was day 2 Gaga doing everything by herself. Day 1 was proper filming of the original concept.

I don't think she did everything by herself. People seem to forget that the footage we got WAS shot by Joseph Kahn and directed by him onset.

She cancelled Day 2 and 3, leading to Laurieann to complain about how much was lost in all those props being wasted and leaking the concept.

Joseph Kahn just refuses to have his name on the project because she took over the project and edited it, I believe with some help, herself. That is why some very shitty and awkward shots were included. Stuff Joseph would know to cut, but Gaga as a amateur didn't pay attention to.

I always thought Kahn had left the building before that material was shot. I refuse to believe he directed her to move like that and to have those expressions on her face. All of those were horrible. Or that there would actually be all those off shots if he had directed the camera movements before hand.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

The fact Lady Gaga could think she could better a Joseph Kahn?! It'd do her career a lot of good for someone to force her to watch Toxic and revise the artist/director politics behind it 100 times.

'Those expression on her face'. What? It was a cut-scene he directed, obviously never intended for a full video.

Basically. When you cut it down to short scenes of only a couple seconds, they're fantastic shots.

The three shots from 2:34 to 2:38 look amazing.

Even my straight-as-hell hip-hop loving brother thought she looked "really legit" and "cool" when she punches the air at 2:37.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Joseph Kahn is a master CGI artist. It would've looked glorious.
While I have no doubt that it would have looked glorious, it's far to say that Toxic has it's far share of dodgy CGI moments (running toward/blowing open the factory for example) and then there's the mysterious case of the white windows in Womanizer!

I never knew the fire escape hooker set-up was supposed to be in the original Edge video as performance shots. The set was so generic and her performance is so disconnected that I assumed it was all chosen at the last minute making the best of what they had outside of the original surgery/mermiad concept. I was sure there was a whole day's worth of filming done making use of the leaked set pictures.

Looks, setting and lighting/mist were all flawless and stunning. What was filmed was the problem.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Well, seeing as The Fame brought her to prominence. I very much doubt that.

Poker Face / Paparazzi aren't generic, they're exceptional. Especially combined with the videos, they're still fresh (though overplayed) pop classics. Some album tracks were generic but the singles were not. Not even Just Dance if you ask me, not at that time.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

I like how she was so theatrical in The Fame, or in songs from the following albums like in the verses of Judas, or Bad Romance, where her singing is not so straightforward. I think it is what still makes The Fame so interesting, whereas Born This Way is more simply Gaga singing with feeling and while it is perhaps better, it doesn't stand out as much. The Fame Monster was right in the middle. I wonder what the new approach will be... I hope there is one.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Just Dance did not seem at all generic at the time.

I first saw the video during a hungover morning after a hook-up with an ex. I can't remember what I thought, but it wasn't "generic".

And it's fucking horrible.

WHAT

Overplayed, to death. Overrated, perhaps. But you did not just call 'Just Dance' horrible. I accept loads of different opinions but that's one that does not compute.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

"Just Dance" had a very large part to play in the mess we're in now. It remains utterly amazing, but the era of pop music it helped to usher in is at the stage of its life where it can't go to the bathroom without help and frequently forgets where it is.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Just Dance didn't 'usher in' anything. It was part of that Akon produced Hip-Pop that has now been ushered-out.
