Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

It would be more interesting and make sense for her to speak in defence of people's right to wear them.

The "burqa = oppression" angle has been done to death (obviously not in pop music though!)

I disagree. The burqa is oppressive and she shouldn't be seen to support a tool used to oppress women. However, there are plenty of women who through religious delusion choose to wear one! So therein lies the problem. I think the approach she should take is, well, quite similar to what she's actually doing. Redefine what the burqa is. Use it as a tool of self-expression. Have Gucci burqas, have transparent burqas, etc. On the face of it, that'll be controversial enough to get attention, but at the heart of it, she's really saying nothing more than 'Be free to express yourself'. A perfect Gaga storm: a sheep in wolf's clothing.

However, the one good thing about that kind of fake controversy is the fact she'll be seen to be supporting Muslims (simply via the act of wearing a Burka - celebrity news doesn't care for nuance, and the only highbrow attention she'll get for it is to attack her for trying to shock), who're under constant attack by the Right in America.

No doubt no matter how she does this, she's going to end up with a fatwa placed on her, and liberal hatred for being a provocateur and insensitive, anyway. The left really irritates me sometimes.

It's probably just going to be "Burqa swag like Lady Gaga" extended over a full song. If she truly wants to "slay" with ARTPOP, which, given what she's said and her recent obsession with how her stans speak on the internet, seems likely, I doubt she's going to wade head first into the controversy that would be incited by a song either about Islamophobia or feminism surrounding the burqa debate.

While it would certainly be interesting for a cultural icon to finally take on the sexism and homophobia of islamic culture head on (enough with Madonna poking at Christianity, it's like taking candy from a baby) I don't think I would enjoy Gaga becoming the subject of a jihad.

All the boys (all the boys) wanna see what's underneath my burqa
All the boys (all the boys) wanna see what's underneath my burqa
There's Buddha and there's Ghandi/these prophets gettin' handsy
even Indira wanna t-t-tickle my fancy
All the boys (all the boys) wanna see what's underneath my burqa
All the boys (all the boys) wanna see what's underneath my burqa
There's Shiva and Miss Benazhir/strong women now cast off your fear!
Even Mohammed wants to see what's under here
Woah-oh-oh-oh-OH/underneath my burqa (all the boys wanna see)
Woah-oh-oh-oh-OH/underneath my burqa (all the boys wanna see)
All the boys (all the boys) wanna see what's underneath my burqa

Bu-bu-burqa bu-bu-bu-bu-burqa
Bu-bu-burqa bu-bu-bu-bu-burqa(x4)

[MIDDLE 8]
I thus declare a fatwa! I thus declare a fatwa!
I thus declare a fatwa on the daaancefloor!
I thus declare a fatwa! I thus declare a fatwa!
I thus declare a fatwa on the daaancefloor!]

That's fucking amazing. Seriously. Although you were just joking and it's obviously all too outrageous to include in a song, the middle 8 would work. I think it's the right level of absurdity. I can even hear the voice she'd deliver it in.

I want Burqa to be like the fake demo. Her just saying Burqa followed by an epic dance beat. The video could feature a crazy rave party in glamorous designer Burqa's.

Indeed, it could result in the tears, candles and roses...

Things like the meat dress are just widely publicized but not exactly controversial apart from a few vegans somewhere maybe.

It was a headline grabber...but Linder Sterling wore a meat dress back in the 80s when she wanted to make an artistic protest against The Hacienda. I was certain Gaga knew of Linder's work as soon as I saw her in that outfit. I'd be astonished if she didn't know about Linder. Vegetarians were probably annoyed though - we are easily riled!

The burka has been deployed into pop music by both M.I.A. and Ivan Shapolov's post-t.A.T.u. project Tena (?) whose invitations for journalists to see her showcase were shaped like aeroplanes! She covered her face at all times and (I might be mistaken) seemingly had footage of 9/11 projected onto a screen behind her.

That's amazing too. I love that. Party in the burkas, just getting down, whisky everywhere. Man. All the ideas are amazing, and the song's not going to live up to the anticipation.

Conseulanono is, rightly, clutching his pearls at the mere thought.

That project was just desperately attention-seeking and anti-Islam, rather than a proper 'deployment' of the importance/symbolism of the burqua in pop music!

It is an attention seeking move regardless. Which isn't a bad thing in pop music, not in the slightest. Madonna intended to do her 'terror bride' thing as well which sounds great but would probably be too ridiculous. But strictly speaking...Ivan Shapolov got there first with his terrible project. I'd rather Gaga took notes from M.I.A. and the Bad Girls video rather than Tena.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Anyone think Gaga might can her Azealia collabs because of her recent tweets?

Regardless of whether they were offensive, Gaga probably can't going around collaborating with people who justify the use of 'faggot'. Her little monsters would probably have a breakdown.

Yeah, I thought the same.

I'm not sure they were ever destined for the album anyway, so I'd be very surprised if we heard anything now. The can of worms would be enormous.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

But she was really close to Perez Hilton who used the word during a fight with Will.I.Am and she didn't fall out with him over that incident. Why would she can that song because of Azealia Banks throwing a tantrum online? She was being provoked by two other loudmouths. I doubt Gaga will be so fickle and disloyal to Azealia.

It would be stupid to get angry at an openly gay person for using the word 'faggot' in any context; same with the word 'nigger' and black people. You can not tell people they're not allowed to use a word that's oppressed them in any context they like.
