Lady Gaga

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

Remember the Born This Way review that said the chorus of Bad Kids sounded like she was singing "I'm a faggot"? I think it was on Slant. That would've been interesting.

That actually would have been interesting, and I wish she would have done that. The message of the song is a great one, and Gaga using the word in that track would have had some real power, even though she's not a gay man.

But of course there are also 'men that happen to be homosexual' who act as hetero-normative and inoffensive as possible

Okay, guys, I promise. This is my last point. I'm sorry for labouring this. But RMX, you make an unjustifiable assumption here. That gay men who act 'hetero-normative are acting and that their natural state is more feminine, then continue to rebuke me. Not only is that statement unjustifiable, but I also disagree with saying anyone has a typical personality dependent on their sexuality or gender. We are individuals, not groups.

And I won't drag you all down into this by starting another branch, but I'd just like to say that working out what is and isn't homophobic, etc, can become so absurd sometimes. For instance, I know many people who'd be gravely offended by SunshineConcubine's statement that femininity is a trait equated with gay men.

BUT IT IS. That's a fact. A cold, hard, shiny (plastic) fact. Have you ever read any sort of academic article on homosexuality / gay identity, anything? I know opinions can't really be wrong but what you're saying is just so wrong on so many levels. It's very ignorant. You can't just say something is okay and that then makes it okay and everyone should just think it's okay because you say so. It's like saying, as a white person, "oh please that's not racist, grow up!". You just can't say that. Well of course half of the US (the right half) does, but still. Doesn't make it okay.

You know, my mates were telling me she has a willy! I can't believe it!

Have you heard her new song? I hear it sounds a bit like Express Yourself.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

So.... Lady GaGa. She's something, 'eh?

You know, that’s funny that you mention that. This person was just brought to my attention not too long ago. I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn’t sure. I really don’t spend any time on the Internet, so I guess I live a little under a rock in that respect.

My point wasn't about the factual accuracy of Sunshine's statement, it was about people's ability to find anything offensive. But please, stop telling me I'm wrong and start telling me what parts of what I'm saying is wrong and why. And if you want to bring facts in it, then preferably do so with sources. My last post at the bottom of the page is a retort to your post in which you seem to assert that any gay person who is not feminine is merely acting to be considered hetero-normative which quite frankly is mad and seems to ignore any sociological evidence on gender roles and socialisation, in order to fit with the radical gay agenda - those who wish to live a life separate from current social norms and attempt to assert a biological basis to do so. One that doesn't exist.

No, their natural state isn't anything. A "natural state" is a naked baby bare of any type of expression / identity, anything beyond that is shaped and moulded by the standards of society. And for men, the standard just happens to be what we'd call 'casual straight-acting'. So most men act that way, and that's perfectly fine obviously. But if you're gay, you might feel like you don't fit in anyway. You might want to reject the standard, because the standard is against you. You might want to express yourself differently and establish your own identity. And that's where stereotypical behaviour comes in, and every subculture does that. Look at ethnic minorities who were born in the States, but still have an accent. It's a way of self-expression and creating ones own identity.Of course flamboyant males weren't born with a pink boa saying 'oooh gurlll u looking racthet today', but straight men aren't born with macho attitude and love for football either. People should be allowed to express whatever identity they want, without being called derogative terms like 'faggot' because they choose to express themselves differently. That would be a true post-homophobic world.

I will never get why this made so many people angry. I mean A) it's hilarious and B) it's not even that mean.

We will never get a B&A produced Gaga track, will we?

Never say never. Especially now that they're not working with Britney for the foreseeable future... Then again, while it could be amazing. It would be rife with copycat comments and that would ruin the song so as of now, I'd rather not.

Unless it's a Britney feature but, I'd rather not with that too.

So if the femininity argument also afflicts straight men how does that make her explanation of her use of the word homophobic? Quite in fact you've just accepted that it isn't.

Re: Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (Album, 2013)

What she said was homophobic but she clearly isn't properly homophobic. I mean, when it comes down to it most people are at least casually homophobic, it's hard to psychologically escape it in any society. I work in a 'gay' institution and the amount of blatantly homophobic comments I hear on a daily basis, from gay males, is staggering.

Okay, so even if for a moment we agree on that (I don't but for the sake of argument), does that make it okay? Is it okay to make fun of feminine men with a slur commonly used against gays, who are often associated with that quality? It's just shifting the target area a bit, but it's still just as offensive and ignorant, but she's apparently expanding it beyond the gay minority (except the ones that don't behave feminine and share your views, of course). Well done Azealia!
