Lady Gaga

I know she does value accolades and this isn’t directed at any posters in this thread but I find it profoundly annoying that it’s a largely held assumption that an Oscar is the main driver behind her turn to film.

It is so clear performing is in her blood so why is it hard to believe she doesn’t genuinely love and find fulfillment from working with the top talent of the film industry in exploring the same kind of intensity and compelling personas she explores in her music? If she was swerving far against type and taking on understated “serious acting” roles in indie projects I’d maybe see the sentiment more, but all of her roles thusfar align so crisply with the imagery, ethos, and storytelling sensibilities that she’s already displayed before delving into acting.

She openly wanted a #1 for Just Dance from the very start when she was performing in Ikea parking lots so I’m well aware a golden statue is probably on her mind and a good reification of her hard work and acceptance by peers but the obsession with “Give her the Oscar so she gives this up / is less extra about it!” seems to be willfully misunderstanding her.

I'm sorry but I cannot fathom what could be artistically fulfilling about playing Harley Quinn in a movie made by a frat boy with no original bone in his body. If she was indeed acting in small, grounded indie films that don't constantly play on her popstar persona I could respect it more but she took a role in the sequel to a billion dollar comic book movie that was exploiting mental illness and social isolation to make some inane hagiography for a violent incel hero, she's obviously building her brand and chasing clout. And that's fine, it's how she was able to come back from showbiz hell post-ARTPOP, ambitious career moves and relentless courting of both Grammy and Oscar voters with constant performances, careful collaborations and a palatable image rebrand from outsider rebel to industry treasure. But I don't think Joker 2 is exactly a labor of love, she simply wants to be the biggest actress in Hollywood, hence the constant articles about the 10 million dollar paycheck.

As for my "give her the Oscar so she gives it up!" comment, it was obviously made in jest, she will never give up acting since by her own admission it was her first passion but once she fully establishes herself, she can hopefully have a better balance to music and movies and not the 80%-20% split we've gotten post Joanne.

The problem for me is that she hasn't done anything that really not outside of her wheelhouse. So far she's played singers, eccentrics and Italians which is hardly any sort of stretch for an Italian eccentric who is a part time singer.
She certainly has some talent but nothing so far has made me go "wow" or to not just see Gaga when I watch her performances. She has screen presence for sure, but she hasn't hit gold yet.
It doesn't help that she seems to be fully into the whole method acting travesty which really does nothing for anything other than making them look like twats.

This is Lady Gaga, have we been seeing the same interviews? An Oscar is such an obvious goal-post for her. She has the Dom Perignon bottle ready. I don't think it's about attaining a physical trophy to place on the shelf, but having that "dream come true" type moment. She's already dominated music, and you can tell (even if it isn't always healthy) she's always found motivation when there's something she feels she can prove.

Both aspects are true - it's artistically fulfilling for her, but I'm sure if she did reach even higher highs than A Star Is Born with Joker and swept the Oscars her attention would go toward something different for a few years.

And you all know damn well the moment she gets the little man for acting on her shelf, she'll go around the little golden mask of the Tony dd. Followed by the Lady & Gaga talkshow for the Emmy!

Jokes aside, I just think it is satisfying for her that she's "respected and fully part of the club" while talking about the Hollywood Elite. Not that, like, she wasn't before, but there's a certain "respect" that people have for the Acting game that really isn't there for the Music industry (aka the Grammy x Oscar jokes and so on). For a long time she was making it clear that "I'm no Hollywood type!!" because she didn't feel like she fit, but now tables have turned and... it might be boring but it looks like a "goals!!!" moment for her. She's crossing everything that could be written in a bucketlist of when you're young and dreaming. A real "Good for her".

This is totally twisted and I'm not wishing it on her, but we also know that, the moment she does a role that isn't perceived as "critical darling" or gets pointed out as a possible lowpoint in a flick... she'll switch gears in the blink of an eye. Right now everything has been a real "Honeymoon Phase" because even with something as random as House Of Gucci, she was pointed as a real highlight and deserved praise, but if she really decides to go full "movie persona", it's bond to happen that sooner or later there will be roles that won't be 100% and other stuff like saturation etc etc etc.

She definitely wants that acting Oscar, but thats not her only goal here. She is purposely picking roles that A) don't veer too far off from her persona as Lady Gaga, and B) have some box office appeal. She wants to be a movie star as much as she wants to be an actress. And thus far she has succeeded remarkably well at that. Dipping her toe into the super hero comic book world, but in an artsy Joaquin Phoenix project gives her the two things she wants - a box office hit that will be Oscar bait.

I find it so hard to imagine Gaga and Joaquin talking with each other off set hhh. Joker was a bit of a painful movie, and she will be a big draw to the sequel, so I hope she gets what she wants out of it.
