About half of Blue Banisters is very good, and the other half is career best. It's not quite a wall to wall experience like NFR! but there's so much good stuff on there and she's really never sounded better. Her vocals throughout are tender and exquisite.
Dealer is obviously a brilliant outlier (I hate her for not pushing this when it was doing its thing naturally!), and the title song is her best lead single/a new highpoint for her artistry in general (a case I've made too many times already ddd).
I also have a real soft spot for the back section, specifically Nectar of the Gods and Cherry Blossom which are both super underrated.
What you don't tell no one, you can tell me
Little ghost, blonde hair with lemonade tea
There's much to learn
And so much to see
I push you high, Angelina
On your sycamore tree...
Interesting how motherhood is touched on so many times across this record, from multiple perspectives. I think Cherry Blossom was an outtake from way back, but it seems like it's been a lyrical preoccupation for her forever. The Clementine line from Dance Till We Die is my favourite reference to her future motherhood.
If she or they'd cared enough to build a proper campaign around this album, Blue Banisters, Black Bathing Suit, Dealer and Sweet Caroline would be a brilliant run of singles.
Sorry to go off-piste though. Can't wait for Wednesday!
