Let's Go On A Little Joyride ★✩✮ The Tinashe Discography Rate - THE WINNER IS...

Oh PRISTIN finding their way to thread title, we love legends

majority of my 10's already left so I better not be tagged until like top 10

Wait that was probably about Wee Woo nvm

(Controversial) bop by the way.

I still can't unhear ''we are Pristin (and young)'' and I hate you for that.

Also to keep my post related to the thread: as you know, I've been following this rate from the beginning and I actually read most of the write-ups (something that I don't do usually) even about the songs that I haven't heard before. They're really fun to read (specially ''worth it for'' parts, I love 'em). I think now that we're in the top 40, I should listen to each song that goes out to finally get into her discography.

This is really sweet to read, thank you so so much. After all, we're here to have a bit of fun first and foremost and I'm really happy you're appreciating my efforts to keep this going (almost) every day (yes, I know today's elimination apparently got lost in translation but it's coming #soon, possibly maybe). And you know, if you get to discover and love just one song through this I'll be the proudest PJ rate host in the whole world.

* Our last tie in a while *

Second part coming tomorrow

That whole verse is truly something to feel else. Yas girl, you better disown ‘Who Am I Working For?’. And there's more!

He bought me diamond necklace
Said write that as expenses
He's steady tryna flex this
Like "Bae, you're the sexiest"
And he all up all up, on my Insta liking them photos
If he texting bitches, he know
He ain't get the pussy no more

Wig found floating at the bottom of the ocean.

Something To Feel is the first elimination from mixtape Amethyst in quite a while, coming no less than 31 places higher than fellow track Just The Way I Like You. @TRAVVV must be so happy. They’re the only two tracks on Amethyst they didn’t hand a 10. Doesn’t mean they are right though.

The song is kind of good. Well, coming from that initial one-two punch it doesn’t live up to the standard, and it’s too short to properly appreciate on its own, but I still like it. The atmosphere is dark, but like the rest of Amethyst, not capital-D Dark: it’s black with shades of provocative sexy purple, rather than bloody deadly red. Everything screams sex here, from lyrics to production to delivery, and I won’t even pretend I don’t adore that. The panting is what turns the extraness up a hundred few notches and honestly, I live.

Something tells me you lot won’t spend a lot of time thinking about this song. BINGO! As I look out my window, the usual crowd that protests in my garden with slogans and Azealia_megaphone.gifs has reduced to just the loyalists. constantino’s (6.5) mind is elsewhere: “This has potential but it has never really stuck with me no matter how many times I play it. It sounds very close to EP2 Twigs so my opinion is somewhat clouded.” We use to complain about Tinashe all the time but the good sis Tahliah should get a move on as well. 2015 was two years ago! We need new music pls. What’s a Good To Love precious? It’s good to love Something To Feel, at least for phily847 (10): “I have no idea why I love this so much. The sexy panting fits the vibe so well. The 2nd verse is fire! I have no idea why I love this so much. The sexy panting fits the vibe so well. The 2nd verse is fire!” I’ve heard the soul of T.S. Eliot was brought back to life by Lana’s interlude, then listened to the second verse in this, gave up poetry altogether and started working as a barista in a Starbucks in downtown San Fran. Queen of employment.

Tomorrow it's going to be kind of huge. We break 8 average. We lose our first eleven. We lose the second track from Nightride. May or may not be in that order. May or may not intertwine.

Oh and little curiosity time: there's only one person that hasn't lost one of their 10s still, and that's the one and only Ms @ohnostalgia! She won't lose one tomorrow either. Congratulations stingy Queen!

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: this song singlehandedly quenched my thirst for hooks for the next 30 years.

This song! What even is this song! Anything but second-worst Nightride track like you gila monsters apparently suggest. No, I won’t stand by this appalling opinion. I won’t approve of this appalling behaviour. #NotAllPJers

Spacetime, in a way, is the epitome of the level Tinashe reaches with Nightride. Though there had been precedents in her earlier work, mostly on Black Water and Aquarius, on Nightride she truly reaches her apex as a songwriter. The hooks are so strong, so packed, and so many, they shouldn’t have any business being in the same song together. Let alone being great. Yet, they are. We have, apart from the chorus, three differing verses (or two differing verses and two differing pre-choruses if you will), and two bridges. And they all flow so smoothly you really need to focus to tell where one starts and the other begins. It’s like a hook assault on the ears, but it’s all done with the smoothness only high quality R&B music can achieve and it’s an insanely great experience. Now I’m regretting not going all the way and giving it that highly deserved 10 score.

We also need to talk about the Sapphic undertones to this song. I told you “I’m Selfish” wasn’t alone in her catalogue. Though not as explicit as that one, Spacetime is allusive enough that, given also some of her earlier tracks, it’s not really a stretch to think it’s addressing a girl rather than a boy. She mentions being “low-key” with the police, in the car with "tinted windows", which, mind you, mostly refers to using Mary Jane because quite frankly this is also a huge Ganja anthem okcurrrrrr? (The whole floating into space-time must be a not-so-veiled metaphor for feeling high). Some see the specific usage of “sapphire” as an allusion to Lesbos’ illustrious past inhabitant. One whole verse could perfectly apply to a person coming to terms with their sexuality: “Now we're together, we're fucking round forever / You always feel me when you're laying with somebody else / You never tried it yet, just 'cause it feels so good / And every time reminds you of the first night”. Also, the line “I see God when you eat it”. Legend says you’re better able to perform oral sex on genitals like your own instead of those of the opposite sex but I’ma need someone much more experienced than me to come and confirm it. In the end, the biggest hint for me is in the bridges, and how she appropriates dude-bro lingo in phrases like “Peeped it on Instagram / Careful, you're more than that” and “I knock that ass out so crazy”, which is kind of an ingenious way to hint at a girl, but also show the intrinsic misogyny that still pervades everything around us (even ourselves).

And you booted it off at (joint) #37. Ugh. Deep inside you knew you were wrong, though, because the lowest commenter here is the good cyst constantino with a 7: “This is certainly...um...spacey?? But not to the point that it becomes entirely formless, though it’s not my favourite in Nightride.” I can’t really drag you to hell and back for this. Your score was decent-ish and you would never completely back up a song about weed so I’ll let you live. AshleyKerwin (10), unlike me, did the right thing, and is already looking for a cure for the distress this elimination will cause: “A great spiritual successor to the ASMR bop of Cold Sweat.” We could really find some peace in lady at the computer desk seraphically munching on beans and typing something in these moments of deep trouble. We’ll extend our invitation to Touchofmyhand (11) if they want: “There are really few songs that can be so electric and monumental but at the same time so intimate. This is one of them. The way it builds up feels like an event and the climax held up to expectations. The 'peeped it on instagram' part is addictive and the sapphic vibes are always a plus. Very underrated. Can't believe some people deem it as the worst from the album.” I didn’t agree with you on many occasions here but that is 100% the scalding T.

Only The Last Night On Earth stands now for first mixtape In Case We Die. It’s also kind of the title track so maybe that’s fair. You know what’s not fair? THIS BEAUTY VACATING AT #36!

This Feeling is everything that’s chill in the world mixed together, put in a blender, add a catchy beat, add a strong hook. I’ve already expressed my love for the calmer moments in the mixtape and this is without doubt one of the standouts. Maybe not Tinashe at her most interesting, I’ll give you that. But there’s no denying this song has a charm of its own, so positive compared to her generally darker output, but still so unmistakably Tinashe. It feels so young, but we shouldn’t consider that as negative. She was only 19 when this was released, after all, and the song is all the better for it. It’s fresh, it’s optimistic. Much as I am a certified drama queen, I love me some drama-free content every now and then and that’s what songs like This Feeling are for.

We’re all about peace and love in the comments as well ~° Yay. Wait. Maybe I spoke too early. phily504 (8.5) has an opinion but his PR department is trying their best: “Slightly repetitive but I love the vibe of this.” NOT AFTER THE SCORE YOU GAVE SPACETIME YOU DON’T! nikkysan (8.5) is impressed by the consistency of it all: “After having to follow two extremely strong tracks I think this holds its own somewhat.” This is slightly less enthusiastic than I’d like but maybe if I present it as such no one will notice. We end, as usual, with the boiling hot green tea, this time courtesy of lemonsqueezyy (10): “Similar to “Rude Boy” only in the aspect of this being the bright and shining gem in an album of dark and deep tracks. This one always makes me smile, and the choreography in the final chorus of the music video goes the f*ck in!” Yes, the video is so cute. And from minute 2:29 to 2:41 she serves some serious Katya at the talent show realness, what with the walking back-bends and the standing mid-air split. Maybe it’s Katya that serves Tinashe This Feeling realness because she did it 3.5 years earlier. I don’t know. Talent resembling talent anyway.

I’m really amazed by the following this little song has amassed. Definitely one of the biggest surprises of the rate so far. Hope I didn’t piss you off that much gals. Hope you enjoy the little cover I made for it. Amethyst’s artwork is really something else. I love it so much. Even more than the actual mixtape now that I think about it.

Enough about my questionable graphic skills and aesthetics shenanigans. Why do I find this song so middling? I don’t actually. I think it’s kind of good. It’s just that I’m not particularly here for it. I never skip one of her songs but if I had to skip one, it would definitely be this one. The fact there’s this muddy production throughout doesn’t help matters either. The song is not strong enough for me, and while Something To Feel feels the most interludish among the tracks on the mixtape, I wish she chopped off 1 minute from this one instead. Verse 2 is a bit of a moment though so I’ll take that and leave.

As I said before, there was quite the universal acclaim for this track. Slаy a bitsy. When the tree be way too strong, call phily420 (8): “I feel like this would be trippy AF and incredible when high.” Don’t tell me you never tried. For TRAVVV (10) this was “Yet another contender for my 11. Check out this gorgeous dance video”. Embedding at the end. I’d give feedback on the choreo but I was constantly distracted by those lights and the atmosphere they create and how I want one of them in my living room so that at night I can walk around my house all dramatic and shit and wow where do I buy a pair? At last, nikkysan who loses their 11 and I really don’t know whose fault it was. It’s not easy, it’s trigonometry. “This song. THIS SONG. I remember the first time I listened to this, just knowing that this was going to be my favourite Tinashe song ever. To think that this was tucked away in a lil mixtape Tinashe whipped up over the Christmas holidays for her fans blows my mind. This beats out her big production album tracks in Aquarius and Nightride, it's that good. That bridge is one of the most heavenly and euphoric things my ears have ever had the privilege listening to.” I really appreciate these words, I really do, but I still find this song a bit disappointing.

Poor Amethyst is crying tears of ruby after all these eliminations. Look at me, acting like a poet. Put me in my place Queen Tey!

I remember downloading Amethyst from DatPiff, and every time I play a song it’s tagged as “Hip-Hop”. Someone over at DatPiff has to be a fitness freak cause they know damn well one thing or two about stretching. Anyway, if there’s one song deserving of the label, it’s this one. It’s definitely hip-hop. Bonkers hip-hop, that is.

In a way I love all the ridiculousness. The sass. The bouncy beat. Other times it’s all a bit too much. I think had it been a shorter track I would enjoy it much more. But as it is, it all wears thin after the third minute mark. There’s definitely much better on the mixtape to be found, and we collectively agree. Dreams Are Real-Wrong-Worth It is definitely a hard top 3 to beat for the other releases. Or is it? Stay tuned.

Mostly praise for the new Comedy Queen in town. constantino (9) highly praises without recurring to the usual tired jokes: “I love seeing her personality shine on this, I’d love to see her sense of humour be utilised in her future work...if we get future work, that is.” Welcome to the resigned state of mind! I’d be your guide but it’s just a waste land with nowhere to go, I’m sure you’ll be able to wander off on your own well enough. You can join my scoremate phily345 (6) aimlessly searching for a better hook: “I love the drip drop effect, it's very interesting. I'm sadly not a fan of the chorus.” Ok but why weren't you afan of the magnificent chorus in Spacetime? Huh? Will I ever get tired of holding that score against you? Lemme think... no. And to end, we have TRAVVV (10) in disbelief for homegirl and her way with words: “Poppin corn looking for it? She can sell any lyric I think.” 2pac who? The first draft had this as "2pac cancelled" but then I realized that could potentially prove very problematic. Thank god nobody actually witnessed that. Haha. Ha.

Wow. In Case We Die being the first one out isn’t all that shocking but NOT THIS SOON! I’m sure The Last Night On Earth deserved a Top 20 placement at the very least. It’s not just good, it’s great. Y’all already know my love for that specific song, but this is objectively the best song on the mixtape.

There’s so much to unpack with this song that I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s keep it simple: it just works. Because no matter how many vocal effects, no matter how much instrumentation, no matter all the drama, everything comes across so tight and solid. It’s Tinashe at one of her biggest sounding moments. It’s like she wants to encompass the whole world with this song. And to think she pulled it off so early into her career is nothing short of mind-blowing.

Unsurprisingly, this received lots of praise and commentary. Which makes this low placing all the more unbelievable? Well, going through the scores in the spreadsheets I see one too many 7s, and at this point in the rate that only means doom and despair. I’m not going to name and shame but remember. I never forget. As can attest TRAVVV (10): “This was almost my 11 (as were about 20 other tracks in this rate…)”. See kids? That’s how you try and redeem yourself from a tragic ass score like a 2 for That. Don’t follow constantino’s (6) example: “Great intro, beautiful intro.” Someone revoke her 90s clique card right now. Can we give it to nikkysan (8.5) instead if they aren’t in already? “A really solid introduction to ICWD and Tinashe as a solo artist.”

Then we head into “is it sorta shady” territory. Andy French (7) “This would’ve been a great Janet song. The strings are lovely.” and AshleyKerwin (7) “Sounds pretty. Great for a debut track on her first mixtape.” whose side are you on? Back to the enthusiastic crowd. Gimme that mindlessly positive praise I crave. The good Posh Spears (10) contributed to half the YouTube views: “Not me having difficulty completing the rest of the rate because the first track is so gorgeous that I can’t take it off repeat. Legend!” and last but not least, a true declaration of love from lemonsqueezyy (10): “After discovering her by hearing the legendary “Chainsaw” and thinking her debut mixtape was going to be simple urban-dance jams, I pressed play on this track and my love for her blossomed into something raw, real and everlasting. A true contender for my 11 and the ONE that made me a forever fan.” That was so beautiful. Thank you.
