Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: Providing this iconic already section with a worthy name

Ok, when I was saying this was not my song of choice to carry on Amethyst’s flag I was NOT calling for its elimination. If you’ve been keeping track: it’s real, 3 back to back eliminations from fourth mixtape, meaning that it’s our second release out. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. I thought it would’ve gotten much more love. It’s her second best mixtape after all. That being said, apart from Wrong (still jelly about that), I don’t think there’s a particular standout track to root for, it’s more of a whole affair. But more on that later on.

The song is kind of hilarious, in that it almost feels like it wants to outAquarius Aquarius. I mean, it sounds more watery than all the tracks on the album combined. It even features a horn section playing the chorus of the title track for fuck’s sake. She’s so adorably extra. The lyrics are also kind of a scream. “Ordinary Monday / Lunch with Alicia”. What kind of surreal banality. “We the best we the best we the best / We the best in the west”. What kind of geographical relativism. You better stan hard for K-pop sis.

Ah, and there’s also Iamsu. A bit on the bland side to be honest.

Y’all went Nancy Drew on this one. Or I shamelessly stole your intellectual property for my write-up. Nah, would never do something like that. We start off with nikkysan (9), swept off by the eleganza of that sweepingly elegant coda: “That outro of the saxophones playing Aquarius... I love that so much.” If you’re wondering, yes, I’m using random Italian words that you think you know the meaning of but you really don’t. I don’t need much to have fun really. Other sax praise from easy peasy lemonsqueezyy (9): “The “lunch with Alisha” line and the sax solo at the end got it up there in the ranks with me.” God I should have used that ages ago it was so easy peasy lemonsqueezyy.

But there’s one question that keeps us up at night. Who is Alicia, phily??? (9) “Who the fuck is Alicia?” I don’t know, ask @2014 “And why is she so lucky to have lunch with this queen? This would be a lovely, long interlude on Aquarius or even a nice bonus track.” Still better than How Many Times though. But wait, there’s someone who doesn’t agree with the general consensus??? What’s up, Touchofmyhand (8.5) “I'll say it: the sax solo was completely unnecessary. She does this more often than not.” I should not be trusted in this, because I excessively love when there’s instrumental parts that are a reprise of the vocal melody, and to do that a whole album apart. Who does that shit? What about Alicia? Definitely not her. Now I’m straight up ranting, back to our sensible commenters. Or maybe not. constantino (9) brings up absolute nugus: “Fifth Harmony are shook. The dripping noises trigger my bladder but I don’t even mind. The rap verse is great and fitting to the song. Oh and the sax at the end makes my buss flutter like no other instrument.” Et tu Posh Spears (9): “OOOH that production is delish. Fifth Harmony who?” I’m sure our girl Tinashe would find it immensely offensive to be compared to them. Or maybe not (2). Anyway, we close off with TRAVVV (10): “Ordinary Monday, Lunch with Alicia is one of my favorite opening lines EVER.” Let’s hope they enjoyed their meal this afternoon.

Amethyst leaves us just before Top 20, but places third overall. Who's laughing now? Which other releases will it have beaten? Guess we'll just have to wait and see. This high placement is definitely thanks to some super hardcore fans. The average for that Top 3 is Top 10 Albums Ever worthy. Whew.

Amethyst is Tinashe's last mixtape to date. She recorded it during the holidays after Aquarius as a Tatianna thank you to us, the fans, and she couldn't have thought of a better gift honestly. Now, i'm not a super super fan, I think there are a couple duds and that's kinda unforgivable if there are only 7 tracks, but on the other hand it houses some of the best songs she has ever released (read, Wrong), and it's also a darker, more hip-hop leaning direction that could prove really interesting for her to explore. It'd definitely be a great starting point.

And don't get me started on the artwork. A-MA-ZING. One of my favorites, and not just in her discography. And it's not even for a studio LP! I mean, the whole black and violet color palette is gorgeous, and black hair suits her so well. She looks fantastic honestly. I must confess I'm no expert in graphic design (it must show), but I really like what I did with the seven covers for Amethyst. But it's not because of my limited skills, it's the raw material that's so great I can't ruin it in any way. Thank you Tinashe, for being a true inspiration, not just for the music, but also for the aesthetics. Thank you so so much.

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: I could single out all of the lyrics really. The level is sky-high

Second single from Aquarius booted off before Top 20 was definitely not something I was expecting. It was also the main culprit of dispersing all the buzz generated by 2 On so probably its low placement should surprise no one. Again, things like those should not spoil our enjoyment of Tinashe’s immaculate bops. Otherwise we’d straight up hate three fourths of her catalogue. Otherwise we’d end up like @constantino.

I kind of love A$AP Rocky. I should dig into his solo work. He was perfect in Lust For Life, and on Aquarius he’s the best feature and everyone with a functioning pair of ears agrees. I also live for Tinashe’s rap-singing. The lyrics, again, are stunning. The only thing I’m not here for is that drum pattern. It sounds so… cheap? Boot. It’s a pity, cause otherwise the production is unclockable. Credit where credit’s due though: it’s like the first act to Far Side of the Moon’s I’m leaving your sorry ass grand finale. That song better make it far by the way.

phily936 (9) lets us know he’s generally only here for the bopz: “I'm not a fan of ballads but this is really lovely and a total bop. However I think the verses are slightly stronger than the chorus, but it's still great.” while TRAVVV (10) hit that repeat button one more time: “Definitely played this for a week straight upon release.” We close with constantino (10), who for once wholeheartedly stans: “This is one of my favourite things she’s ever done. It feels very genuine and sincere from her. I especially love how the sparse and distant production contrasts with her warm and grounded vocal delivery.” Awwww. This is actually kinda cute. The editors are telling me it’s not too late for a redemption arc, boo. Depending on the material you provided them, of course.

You're all idiots.

Her best written song and her best song in general.

My ideal Top 10 of what's left. Really sad none of Amethyst cracked Top 20, it definitely had songs worthy of Top 10.

I should have scored Far Side Of The Moon a tad higher. Anyway:

People I’d rate o6/1o: 1 (@Serg.)

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: Contemporary music could do with way more reprises am I right?

We start off our top 20 with the penultimate tie in the rate. First to fall is Black Water’s crowning moment Midnight Sun. Whew. What a fucking opus it is. It’s such a realized song. It’s so mature. In a way, it foreshadows many songs on Nightride: the reprise, the effortless layering of hooks, the differing verses. The difference from that album being that, where Nightride goes straight for the jugular, Midnight Sun is a soft tender caress that lulls you in with its soft and sweet nature.

Honestly, there’s not much to say for this song. If you don’t fully love it, go listen to it until you do. It’s such a refreshing take on a more traditional R&B song. I feel so revitalized every time I listen to it. I can proudly say it’s a song that makes my life better. And considering how wrong many other mixtape gems were done in here, I’m happy it found its way into the Top 20. Even though I’d personally have kept it a place in my personal Top 10.

I’m welling up. constantino (9) did that: “This is giving me some faint Mariah teas...not mad about it! This is delicious.” My prayers came thru sniff. I can’t comment on the Mariah comparison but I’m not that familiar with her so I can’t really tell. AND YES I’M TRYING TO REDEEM MYSELF I EVEN LISTENED TO BUTTERFLY FOR ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY. Honey was such a misleading lead single in retrospect. Incredible bop, but so misleading. At least it (and the album attached) came out though *cries in Robyn*

I feel a bit sorry for TRAVVV (10), this is like their 27th consecutive 10 going out. This is what happens when you 2 That, I guess: “‘Just livin', high life blunt, rippin' / One hit in, back at it, wanna finish / No really, I’m feeling you / You the only ***** I'mma give it to’ … I mean, Shakespeare WHO?” Poor sis can’t ever find peace, she’s been constantly spinning in that grave of hers ever since season 7. And just because I’m a sucker for simplicity, we close off with the great lemonsqueezyy (10): “Black Water’s magnum opus.” Truer words.

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: The bewitching “I’m still wishing on a star” hook

Random curiosity of the day: this was randomly released some time ago on Spotify, as her “latest single”. It even had a single cover and everything. Then it went as it came. Some speculate it was kind of a hacker thing. Icons only.

Ecstasy is officially the only song left from Reverie. Pretends to be shocked. I’m actually really glad about this. They’re easily the best songs on the mixtape and miles above the rest. And Ecstasy is the better one. Good job for once everybody.

What about Stargazing? It floats like a dream. It feels so light and breezy. All this doesn’t even make me mind the clunkiness in the pre-chorus that much. I still notice it though. But that chorus. Wow. I wish I could get two-dimensional and live in its world of clouds and whispers and cotton candy forever. A girl can dream.

nikkysan (8) apparently appreciates Reverie more than I ever could: “I appreciate that Tinashe went in a different direction for Reverie. I love the dreamier production after ICWD and this sets the tone of the mixtape perfectly.” It never comes close to this dreamy level of excellence though. phily746 (8) is serving Karen from the A&R: “I've always thought that the first minute would be great on a perfume advert for Thierry Mugler. The rest of the song is great too and picks up nicely where the last mixtape left us.” constantino (8.5) is also here for the faery from the prairie realness of it all: “These delicate, whimsical vocals? Ooh, I live.” Let’s hope she channels something like this on T3 *winks* Last spot is reserved for Touchofmyhand (10), who uses my favorite l-word: “Lush. Hits the right marks. Everything I need for a 10 to do.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY ITALIAN BAE!!! ♡♡♡

I can't believe I'm a low-scorer for anything Tinashe, never mind Amethyst! I'm actually surprised it's out before Reverie.

I fully expect Aquarius to take a big hit before the Top 10 but to be the last collection standing.

I think our Top 10 will look a little like this:
Vulnerable
Bet
Bated Breath
2 On
All Hands On Deck
Feels Like Vegas
C'est La Vie
Ghetto Boy
Sacrifices
All My Friends

I think the first four of those will definitely be in the Top 5 and it could quite possibly end my life.

Edit: Happy Birthday!
