Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: Banana all in that split

All My Friends wins the Extras race. It’s what she deserves. Superlove finally leaves us at #18. It’s what she deserves.

Superlove is cute, but it feels completely out of its depth this far into the rate. It’s just an okay song. Now, I paid it total dust during its time of release, but that video made me sit down and pay attention. What a fucking moment that video is. ‘Baewatch’ is actually the greatest way to describe it in a nutshell: pure campy sex on the beach. A good summer video doesn’t need incredibly elaborate storylines or concepts to work. But maybe that’s the trick: they rely mostly on the artist’s charisma.

And Tinashe’s charisma here breaks the roof. She’s an unstoppable force: she’s sexy, she’s goofy, she’s energetic, she gives it all and delivers in spades. There’s so many iconic lqqks in the video: the lollipop, the towel routine, the ending alone on the beach. To say it’s one of the best ever pop videos I’ve ever watched would be painfully obvious. To deny it would be entirely ridiculous. Even though I’m not that big on the song, Superlove deserved the world only for the visuals. But alas, talent only wins sometimes.

nikkysan (7) is disgusted, like me, for its non-existing charting life. “This is Basicnashe done right. With all the crap that makes the Top 10 these days, why couldn't this at least chart?” I don’t know but let’s blame it on streaming. ThisIsRogue (9) is a honorary member of Team Versatility: “A. BOP. Her style of moody R&B is fantastic, but she does straight up bops so well!” and Andy French (9) gets his life as well: “Okay I know this highkey nearly killed her career but I love it so much.” It’s no Charli XCX SuperLove though. Yes, I just did that annoyingly dumb song titles association again GODDAMNIT!

phily2000s (8) brings up someone I’ve never heard of: “Early Ciara vibes which is obviously a good thing. An unexpected sound from her. The Danny L Harle remix fucking goes off!” The Danny L Harle? I’ll make sure to check it out. Touchofmyhand (10), stop trying to make Popnashe happen, it’s not going to happen: “This is what Popnashe's trademark should be. Pop but distinct enough. And the video is her best” Easily. Not that she doesn’t have other great videos, but that’s uncanny. What’s new? constantino (10) and I having different views. Groundbreaking. “WHEW! Iconic! What an absolute rush of a song, though, and it still feels fresh! The video remains absolutely flawless and it wasn’t until New Rules came along that I had seen such an impeccable visual since.” That sounds like a stretch at first but deep down you know it’s 1000% true. Posh Spears (10) is unapologetic: “I know this song is polarizing but I genuinely love everything about it and it’s one of my favorite bops of summer 2016.” You’re so brave. Teach me your ways. “An incredible video as well.” That I agree. And last but not least, our 11 lemonsqueezyy: “I love everything about this, so much that it's in the top 10 most played on my iTunes and I ordered my boyfriend a birthday cake with a still from the video because it used to be “our song.” Oh, puppy love. ”. I’m listening to Vroom Vroom right now and I’m getting emotional af and it’s awkward in the same way but it’s because I’m thinking of the Nightride selling stats and not this story I swear.

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: “Ain’t no stopping on the highway / Ask me where I’m going I say, ‘my way’”

Second taste from second album Nightride is out just short of Top 15, and I actually don’t mind it. It’s a great track, but it feels like its time has come. I still prefer it to a certain Nevada fantasy song, but you can’t really have everything in life right? I mean, you can’t have a successful, satisfying life, AND a new Tinashe song just out, ready to be enjoyed, can you?

Back to something that matters. What I like most about this song is how it feels like a proper journey. As it should, considering the theme. It’s slow but bouncy, it’s the perfect soundtrack to long mindless drives in the middle of nowhere with no one to be found on the road for miles and miles. Ah, and in the great tradition of best ever song to lipsync to Shut Up And Drive, it’s also a big allegory to sex. Because why not.

I might add that I got to experience first-hand a really shitty drive home earlier, comprising of: a bunch of visibly drunk cretins who tailgated me for half a mile; a truck that almost bumped into my side; the highway being closed thus making me get home half an hour later. Honestly, it feels like poetic justice to have one of my favorite artists sing me that there’s also a really good and pleasurable side to driving. No sexual puns intended. If you see them just know I already have the vice squad’s number.

Something bout nikkysan (10) makes me feel like a dangerous woman: “Fuck it I'm giving this a 10, got my life to this during the weekend, soooo catchy.” sumthinboutsumthinbout. phily696 (7) is playing Bianca Del Rio dress up: “I didn't like this when I first heard it but it's really grown on me.” Truth tea here: Gia Gunn’s confessionals (along with everything Laganja) are the most entertaining parts of Season 6 and you can quote me all day on that. Speaking of, Touchofmyhand (9.5) stans my boo Ganja with me: “Yup, this bussy is going to the floor.” Y’ALL WANTED A TWIST, HEY? “Could have been a hit.” I’m still so shocked how she never bangs her head when deathdropping. It’s really… mindboggling.

constantino (10) loses another high score. I’d say 'ha suffer' but I’m not feeling that petty tonight. Still petty enough to type that down though: “Ah, this reminds me of a time when I had hopes of Joyride actually coming out. I can’t believe there are people who actively disliked this upon release?? It’s one of her catchiest and most instant songs she’s ever put her name to.” Oh wow, this is one of the rare occasions where I wholeheartedly agree with you boo. Let’s address the elephant in the room here: it’s because it’s kind of slower than her general output and the basic girls here aren’t ready for that. Case in point: AshleyKerwin (9.5) “How did this sound so basic when it got leaked in like, January 2016 but now I pop off every time I hear it?”

God, I still feel whiplash from when a friend used this gif in the groupchat and I bet she has never even heard of RuPaul. Or when my mom and her friends used the Michelle Visage ‘No’ one. Thanks folks for making me feel what cultural appropriation feels like I guess.

Lowest: 5.5x1 (@2014) this is the only under 6 score in a good while and I’m taking it as a personal offense

My Vote: 10

Worth It (feat. Iamsu) for: “Second round, can you last tonight? / Spin me round and leave it inside / E-E-Extra loud, every time we play / Watch me dance around all over your face” (but I also utterly live for the ‘sacrifices’ adlibs at the end of the second chorus/before the bridge)

In what can be defined as an ironic twist of fate, our rate's last tie is between the two Metro Boomin produced tracks from Nightride. They’re also two of the best tracks in a stellar record, and honestly Sacrifices deserved a place inside Top 10 what were you all thinkin.

First things first, it’s a colossal bop. You won’t find a bigger one on the album, and it may even reach 2 On levels of making your ass stand up and wiggle wiggle. Another one you probably don’t want to play on public transport. I can’t really say what’s more excellent, the hooks or the production. But what’s most remarkable is how cold it all sounds, and I fucking love it. Sacrifices is a femme fatale anthem and the hollow production perfectly complements it. Also, that bridge is to die for, that outro is to die for, “I will not be ignored” cascading into Company’s beat is to die for. I think this song may be my favorite from Nightride, and in her overall Top 5. Should’ve been immense but at least we got it so I can’t complain much.

lemonsqueezyy (10) might as well be my housemaid because sis damn knows how to spill that tea: ““Watch me dance around all over your face” deserves the highest of praises in itself, let alone the whole fucking track.” Serving pure, unfiltered sex and pulling it off so naturally isn’t actually that easy but she makes it work every single time. Back to earth with the puritan TRAVVV (6.5): “This always makes me blush.” Ok werk. constantino (8) is living the spooky ooky fantasy: “Ooh this is dark, huh? I live. Especially for that dracula, esque piano outro.” The outros in Nightride alone put 90% of the other girls’ albums to shame teebs. phily707 (10) joins us in the circle of great taste: “Classic Tinashe. I love how she uses and changes her voice here to push the slinky production in the right places. When I hear something like this, it baffles me that she's not bigger.” Same. And last, nikkysan (10): “Many fans from all over the net consider this to be her best song and it's not hard to see why. I don't put this in my personal Top 5, but it's fantastic.” Introduce me to these amazing folks please.

Nnnnnnot this basically turning into a name it and shame it. Really, if your lowest score was a seven point fucking five you know you really did that. Far Side of the Moon is gorgeous and I wish I could’ve joined that exclusive club of 10s but as I was rating I was telling myself “be strict you are the rate host!”. I gave 15 10s (including my 11) and what was the point really when 8 of them are already out?

I remember the first time I listened to Aquarius. As I usually do, I was driving in my car. As the song is in the second half it soundtracked my way back home. It was an immediate standout. This song was never a grower and it never will be: it immediately hits you because it’s a ballad that refuses to be just a ballad. It’s emotional, but also energetic. It’s a blend that feels particularly relaxing and chill. Honestly, this song shouldn’t be as good as it is, considering it’s just an album track off a debut album. But Tinashe is that kind of artist. She’s special. She can record a boppy ballad and make it an essential standout.

And it has quite the lyrics to boot. As I previously stated it feels like the sequel to Pretend: while there she tried to pretend a failed relationship still worked, here she completely breaks free and dumps her way out of a toxic relationship. And she’s so likeable you can’t help but root for her when she shows us her more assertive and in control side.

After a brief parenthesis, I recognize once again the good liberal TRAVVV (10) I’ve got to know: “Another near 11. I love that this usually makes it into her sets.” 2018 IS THE YEAR I FINALLY GET TO SEE HER LIVE I CAN FEEL IT AND NOBODY CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE. Other (incredible) praise from phily369 (8): “I remember a lot of people saying this is very Aaliyah and I definitely agree. Lovely production and chorus.” When you bring up God herself you know you’re in front of something truly special. Did I tell you I’m in love with this 100% positive constantino (8)? “The booming production is among the best on the album.” I mostly agree. Now that I think of it the drum pattern is maybe what stopped me from awarding this a perfect score. As always, we end with the highest score, this time courtesy of nikkysan (10): “I slept on this track for quite a while but it finally clicked for me at the beginning of this year. It's really underrated. I like to think of it as what Crossing The Cosmo grows up to be.” YES. Unfortunately, 11-giver ThisIsRogue didn’t provide commentary, but I’m very curious what you think of it. Feel free to post your thoughts below xx

Far Side of the Moon is iconic. I'm surprised at how loved it is because it's the first time in 3 years I've seen anyone talk about it. My brother said it reminds him of Caught a Lite Sneeze by Tori Amos and I definitely agree with it. I'm surprised at how far it went in the rate.

phily234 (10) is self-aware: “I know this is quite basic seeing as the chorus is simply her repeating one line, but it just carries me away.” I don’t get the one line chorus criticism (but I stan apparently the worst offender of all time of this, AKA the “tuneless funereal dirge” Ultraviolence), but yeah, this is indeed basic. Much as I can’t stand that word. Posh Spears (9.5) simply states: “A breezy bop I always get my life to”. Okay but did it deserve to outlast Far Side of the Moon? Did it deserve your 9.5? Again, I gave it a 9 so what do I really know? constantino (11) take us away! “WHEW! My wig would know what Vegas feels like, since it’s currently flying over the Nevada desert as I type. The euphoric, luscious, otherworldly production is so thick and so full that I need an inhaler just to get through it.” I’m going to do the classy thing (for once) and just not say anything. See, character development right there.

How was your American trip hon btw xx

Clearly, I love this song to give it my 11. Firstly, I love the moody production because it sounds so ethereal. Images of late nights sitting in a dark room, lit only by the light of a full moon run through my head when I listen to this. The production also gives the song a push-pull vibe which is a good backdrop for Tinashe's voice and lyrics, both of which are also great. The lyrics themselves are most easily interpreted to be about a lover, but they're also open to interpretation as well. Brilliant song.

Okay, I know we repeat the remaining songs often in here, but I was surprised to find out Feels Like Vegas was still in here. Good for her!

We’re getting dangerously close to that 9 average. Falling at #13 is yet another Nightride cut, this time track #2 C’est La Vie. When you do so well for half the competition, a sharp culling is to be expected. But it still hurts.

C’est La Vie isn’t particularly remarkable in the context of Nightride, but it’s still a pretty great track. Though quite short (consisting mostly of 2 choruses and a verse), it’s the outro that sets it apart. The verse slows down, the vocals deepen, and you get surrounded by this sultry knocking rhythm that’s equal parts seductive and catchy. Also remarkable as it continues the career themes of opener Lucid Dreaming, as well as her beloved weather metaphors. Don’t you forget that Aquarius literally ended with a storm, and now here she’s explicitly after the sun. And I couldn’t wish her anything but.

constantino (9) brings up some total nugus (again): “B*WITCHED WHO???” indeed. “I want to swim in these soundscapes.” Only if it’s CRJ Warm Blood style! phily777 (9) is being “stunning as always”. Yes you are! Before we get too positive though, let’s bring back some terrifying memories with AshleyKerwin (9.5): “This song reminds me of the coldest, deadest days of winter around the US Inauguration and just the resignation and hopelessness I felt of not knowing what was up ahead.” I’m so sorry this conjures such shitty feelings. But your score tells me you can appreciate it for what it is. No need to ask that to last commenter Andy French (10): “This was already amazing and then that delicious vaporwave-y switchup at the end happened and I ascended to the astral plane.” Are you spying on my Nightride draft?
