ENTROPY
7.666666667
My Score: 8
(@happiestgirl, @Sanctuary: 10) HIGHEST V. LOWEST (@Cutlery: 3)

It’s probably a good thing this is out, if only so Cutlery’s heart, hardened by this song’s ascendance into the top 30, can finally begin to heal. Otherwise, I really enjoy it. It’s not quite Art Angels-caliber pop because the production is fairly ordinary, but the melody is bulletproof, especially on the verses, which are absolutely lovely. She sings with a certain easy breeziness that’s quite appealing and I also hear a smidge of tasteful vibrato on some words. Really, the entire song is appealing. It’s sugary pop but it’s rather chill as well. I think it would make a good daytime driving song.

If you guessed that this is happiestgirl’s kind of shit, you would be correct. She gives it full points and says, “Please work with Bleachers more!! This is so delightful.” No offense to Jack Antonoff, but I think she could easily achieve this type of sound by herself. The pure pop sound in also working for Trouble in Paradise (7.5), who says, “There’s kind of a joy to having Grimes on a more basic pop track like this.” constantino (8) is certainly feeling the joy or some kind of emotional: “Urgh this is fucking gorgeous. California’s little sister<3.” He’s not the only one getting Art Angels teas. Mirwais Ahmadzai (8) argues, “This isn’t worlds away from the lighter, breezier moments on Art Angels. I have a lot of… feelings about Bleachers/Jack Antonoff, but he does often work wonders. The song is still very Grimes.” Not to Xanax (6), who says, “I cannot rate this as a Grimes track. The vocals are beautiful, the melodies are beautiful but overall it lacks the little irritating details in the instrumentation, etc. which make Grimes songs so great. This is almost too sweet in a way?” As much as I like this song, I have to agree. The instrumental is nice and it works, but it certainly lacks the intricacy and sonic color of a Grimes production. Still, it does show her gift for a hook, an observation made by caladan (8): “Entropy is one of her catchiest songs.” Easily (pun so fucking intended). HappyBirthday (6) recognizes its catchiness, but he also thinks there’s something forced about it: “Empathy, entropy, enemy, energy rings a bit rhyming dictionary to me. Still catchy though.” But enough about my attempts at poetry.

You guys know we had to end with Cutlery (3), who has had a one-sided feud with this song for the entire rate. He originally didn’t even dignify it with commentary but then he sent me this: “Her vocals in this have always been hella annoying to me. It doesn't help how I find the production to be an absolute racket, like a sort of try hard sing-along mess in which the guitar doesn't do the song any favors. It's somewhere between sappy and cringy and I simply want to put it off and stay as far as possible from it.” I’m pretty sure Entropy just wants to live its cute drama free life, but I hope this elimination provides healing and closure.

Emilie Wille: As a chemistry nerd, this made me really happy when I thought of all the people now googling "entropy".

bleedred100: This got me wanting to go on a stroll down town while drinking starbucks lmao

The Technician Kid: This is the only song I heard grimes say actual words

I don’t like this fan-made video at all, but embedding it can’t hurt:

I don't know, I just find the instrumental to be gimmicky and meh, which are the last things I want from a Grimes song (albeit this being a collaboration)
The instrumental is the work of Bleachers (Jack Antonoff). It lacks that Grimes charm but it's still serviceable.

SYMPHONIA IX (MY WAIT IS U)
7.833333333
My Score: 10
(@Raichu, @japanbonustrack, @caladan, @Satyress: 10) HIGHEST V. LOWEST (@Untouchable Ace, @HappyBirthday: 5)

This elimination is very Raichuphobic. WTF, y’all? I expected this to go Top 20. Imagine the horror and distress I experienced as I was forced to watch it fall further and further down the leaderboard. I’m not a huge fan of the dark, atonal turn this takes at the end, but the rest of it is absolutely majestic. The first time I heard those mythical sounding background chants (which sound old as time, but in the best way possible), I knew I was in for something special. There’s something so effortless and evocative about the melodies, which are sung with tons of understated emotion. And there’s an intense yearning to it, but it’s not the kind that hits you in the face. Rather, it’s the kind of yearning where the yearner sounds somewhat content with the situation but still holds out some hope. In this way, I think this song is vaguely Halfaxian. Like some of Halfaxa’s best songs, there’s an emotional complexity here, a kind of light within the darkness, but in this case that complexity is delivered through more confident and assured songwriting. In some ways, I love this song just as much as “Oblivion” or “Genesis,” even if it doesn’t have the same impact and resonance of those two.

happiestgirl (7) disagrees with me about the ending but it’s all good since she’s giving Symphonia IX its due: "I'm bopping to these drone noises at the end." I’m bopping to the revenge I’m going to get on the people who gave it mediocre scores, but let’s move onto Satyress, who matches my 10/10 and gives an excellent description: “Energetic and chill. This song makes me think of rain, it calms me down but I also feel a sort of energy in the air. (Makes no sense, sorry).” It totally makes sense. I too get rain imagery from it and I think it’s one of those rare songs that manage to sound soothing while serving energy. Mirwais Ahmadzai (8) agrees that it straddles the fence between energy and tranquility: “I love how mellow this is while still retaining that bouncy, Visions sound. The twinkling instrumentation that bubbles up here and there is lovely.” My brother said that the twinkling sounded like Christmas music. Needless to say, that comment has put a strain on our relationship. Speaking of strained relationships, I’ll unfortunately have to start being passive aggressive toward constantino because he gave this a 6 and said: “I’m gonna go ahead and dare to give this a sub-7 score because it’s my least favourite on the album by far. I appreciate its nocturnal vibe, but it meanders without much purpose.” Thankfully, Trouble in Paradise (7) takes us back into more positive and sensible territory even if his comparisons are a choice: “Soft and sweet, it’s Grimes at Lillith Fair feeling herself to Sarah McLachlan.” Okay, I do kind of hear that, but Sarah McLachlan would not sing on a track this musically compelling. Just ask caladan, who gives it a 10 and says, “If Be a Body never existed, Symphonia IX would be secretly the best song on Visions. Everything about this song is great. Heavenly harmonies for everyone.” Some of these girls don’t deserve harmonies.

Cutlery (9) does deserve harmonies, however, because he heaps on the praise:Soundscape sounds so much like the sound iamamiwhoami pursued during the BLUE era (if you use them), and it results is an almost ballad adorned with sweet keyboards and what I've always assumed are distant strings. It all pays off in the end, as she nearly whispers over the instrumental about waiting for success and the lots of hours of hard work she pours into her music, and that key/speed change halfway through always makes me shook.” Xanax (10) is also earning his harmonies (and brownie points): “One of my favorites from Visions.
The instrumental is just immaculate in its simplicity and the background vocals create this very breath-y magical atmosphere. Its truly a symphony. So calming, comforting, yet full of longing.” I long for a world in which people have taste. That’s my wait.

The opening and through first line of "My Wait is U" is one of my favorite parts of her entire discography. I often skip it after about halfway though as it does "meander" a bit.

This is actually a good spot for Symphonia imo. I do occasionally feel like the power of the harmonies isn't a statement strong enough to carry the interest throughout the full song, but it's beautiful regardless
