LISTEN V. RATE: The Official GRIMES Rate (WINNER REVEALED!)

That Art Angels slayage tho!

giphy.gif

how unexpected.

A little bit of tea about the Top 10:

+Some of what happens in the Top 10 is expected, some of it is very surprising.
+Only one song (tomorrow's elimination) in the Top 10 has less than a 9+ average.
+There is one tie in the Top 10. Thankfully, #1 is not a tie.
+There are two songs that I'd rather have not been in the Top 10 and you'll find out which ones those are once they get eliminated.
+The averages get very high at the top.

Hope that gets y'all thirsty. We will kick out #10 and probably #9 tomorrow.

Likely schedule for the rest of the rate, though it is subject to change:

Thurs May 31-#9 and #10
Fri June 1-#8. This is not the tie; I'll only have time for one elimination that day.
Sat June 2-#7 and #6
Sun June 3-#5 and #4
Mon June 4-#3. This is also not the tie; I like to eliminate #3 on its own day.
Tues June 5-Finale. I will reveal #1 and #2 in the same post, the winner first and the runner-up second.

Y’all kinda did the most over this. Is it a banger? Of course. The production is very dramatic and hard-hitting and that drop is crazy good. It also has gorgeous verses with some of her most seductive-sounding vocals; in fact, they’re so pretty that the sheer aggression of the drop comes as a surprise (a good surprise). But honestly, is this really interesting enough to be in the Top 10? It just feels a lot more typical than the other songs that got this far and I think it should have fucked off a while ago. I mean, as good as the Blood Diamonds production is, Grimes’s production is a lot more interesting, especially when she’s firing on all cylinders. Also, is it just me or does the “no chorus” criticisms that get thrown at “Flesh Without Blood” apply more to this song? It kinda seems like the drop is a substitute for a proper hook and that brings it down a bit for me. Anyway, I know it seems like I’m talking a lot of shit about this song, but I do like it. It gets me hyped and sometimes that’s all you need. But ultimately, I don’t think a song that gets most of its power from an impactful drop is worthy of the Top 10.

I asked happiestgirl why this was worthy of her 10 and she answered: “A banger!” Fair enough, I suppose. Let’s ask Cutlery, who also gave it a 10: “This EDM, bussy-destroying bop fucking SLAPS. It sounds like no other song in her discography, yet it feels undeniably Grimes at her most popstar-like. Rihanna found rotting! She just sounds stellar and the quiet choruses make the impending beat drop so goddamn good. The violins used here also feel like a small tease of all the goodness to come in AA, we stan the consistency.” That violin bit does feel a bit Venus Fly, but that’s another song that y’all overrated. constantino (10) also gives this a 10, but asks some important questions: “Um so since WHEN did this pop the fuck off?? Since WHEN was this a TEN?? I was pretty lukewarm on this one for a while but I’ve just listened to it for the first time in over a year and you know what? Claire kinda snapped, huh?” No, y’all kind of snapped, sending this Top 10 over Artangels. Untouchable Ace (10) especially snaps, thinking this should be a blueprint for future music: “I want to visit this Grimey Club. I would love more of this sound in her future projects.” Okay, I dig the song and everything, but no. Absolutely not. Trouble in Paradise (5) agrees as he’s the one person who doesn’t even like the drop: “The breakdown ain’t for me.”

Xanax (9) acknowledges the drop’s inherent basicness, but he think it works in spite of that: “The Legend of Zelda meets EDM. Quiet a strange but super fun combination. The song manages to sound so hauntingly beautiful and mystic while still almost fulfilling every EDM cliché. The instrumental-breakdown sounds kind of ironic in its basic-ness yet it totally works in context of the song, doesn’t it? And in combination with her vocals it manages to sound so effortless. I especially love the shrill shouting in the beginning that gets sampled again and again within the track.” I kinda wish that Grimes would actually sample LOZ. That windmill song from Ocarina of Time would be lit with 100 layers of drums. In a departure from the rest of the panel, caladan (9) appreciates the song for its verses: “I like the verses of Go more than the choruses.” What chorus? Finally, satyress gives it full points for being “A true bop” as opposed to a fake one and Mirwais Ahmadzai (10) loves it in spite of its lack of cred with the fans: “This one isn’t popular among most Grimes fans (I don’t think at least), but I love it. I’m glad Grimes released it and Rihanna didn’t take it.” The fact that the song pisses off the “Grimes sold out” crew is what I like most about it. I imagine the pure disgust and revulsion they feel as they listen to the drop and I can’t help but stan. Also? I hear that every time that drop goes off, a hipster loses their mustache and cosmetic glasses.

I'm glad Go made the top 10! It's truly such a fucking bop. It makes my brain explode every time I hear it. I love that it is an EDM song yet still sounds unlike anything else I've heard.

The remaining tracks are obvious, but... that's for a reason! Still sad Be a Body is gone, but it made it pretty damn far when you look at what's still here (and what's recently left). I'm expecting and also hoping for Genesis, Oblivion, Flesh Without Blood, Kill v. Maim, and Realiti in the top 5.

It's all 9.5 and above for me now and has been for a few eliminations so we did it.

If it makes you feel any better the top 10 Vanessa and Artangels should have all made top 10 but that's not how it works.

In all seriousness, I had a feeling Artangels wouldn't go Top 10 when I picked it as my 11. There's just not as much passion for it as other tracks. Then again, I didn't know that Pin would go top 10 either, so it was possible.

Grimes and Janelle Monae seems like a bussy-destroying combo, but unfortunately this gives me “Love Song” by Madonna and Prince teas in that the combo is more interesting on paper than in practice. Don’t get me wrong. This is a good song. The production has a certain sparseness (especially in comparison to the rest of Art Angels) that sets it apart and it has a bit of a disco-if-disco-was-cool-and-punk vibe. Like a venus fly trap, the song is aggressive and if you’re not careful, it will suck you in. In my experience, it goes off at parties, probably because it has spunk and attitude for days. Never has female empowerment sounded so hip. Also, the constant echo is an inspired touch. I feel like I’m listening to the song in a giant room with the weirdest acoustics. So why did I give this a 7.5? Because it’s just so repetitive. In comparison to its fellow tracks, it feels like the ideas are spread thin. Sure, the hooks are catchy and Grimes and Janelle both sound great, but to me, the song is case of not a lot of content stretched out over three minutes. I keep waiting for it to develop in a significant way and it never does, aside from that violin solo that I admittedly get my life to. It’s kinda serving Dreamfortress intro, which is always a good thing.

Let’s begin with Satyress (10), who hits us with adjectives, as she is known to do: “Divine, sassy, fun and messy (in a wonderful way of course).” For Xanax (9.5), the violin solo hits the V-Spot: “Janelle and Claire go full don-top realness. Such a bold genre-mix and the lyrics/imagery is also so cool! I always loose my wig when the violin-solo starts.” Without your wig, I guess you won’t be able to wrap your curls all around the world. Neither will Trouble in Paradise (10), who also lost his wig to the venus fly: “The only song to contend for my 11, this has always been the song from Art Angels for me. As “Pynk” has proven, Janelle and Grimes are a match made in heaven. I love how each part of the song is its own separate microcosm yet they combine to the perfect banger.” Mirwais Ahmadzai (8.5) didn’t think this combo was possible, but he’s liking what he’s hearing: “Who knew Grimes would drop a ‘sissy that walk’ meauxment with the help of Janelle Monae? Not me, not I. It’s a very fun song.” Cutlery’s (9.5) relationship with the song hasn’t always been fun, but it certainly has been rewarding: “The track I've had the bumpiest road with out of all the AA offerings. Initially loved it, then it lost some of its shine, then became indifferent toward it, then back to loving it! The worlds of two of this century’s most exciting and innovative musicians on a delicious rejection of beauty standards and appeal to the male gaze in one of the biggest string-infused bops of Grimes’ career. Short but effective lines touch upon catcalling, verbal abuse and whatnot in a way that faintly reminisces of the events described in Oblivion. My only minor objection is that the songstress herself falls slightly too much in second plane at times.” caladan (10) doesn’t seem to mind that Grimes fades into the background a bit because he gives it full points and deems it “Grimes' best collab and it's a real banger with an iconic video.” The video is incredible, it’s only flaw being that it was associated with TIDAL. Speaking of video, constantino (10) wants me to embed something for y’all. He says, “Sorry to be crude but this one makes my ass clap like it’s at the Australian Open. I’ve fallen into the habit of overdubbing this onto this:

and I get my fucking LIFE every time, girls."

Will any of you watch all 7 minutes of that? We just don’t know.gif.

Before we cut to the YouTube comments, check out this Tumblr comment, courtesy of happiestgirl (10): “love this text post by tumblr user marcitlali: ‘i don’t know what the hell janelle monet or grimes is saying in venus fly but i still yodel along like Roll my pearl all across the floor! this is for my girls all around the world!!!
