"A Mess (Happy 4 U)" was co-written by Cass Lowe, who also co-wrote Bubbling Under #1 hit "All My Friends" by Snakehips featuring our queen Tinashe.

The song also features co-writes from Perrie, Jade, and Leigh-Anne. Today was the first day I realized Jesy doesn't have a single writing credit on Confetti so, er... take from that what you will.

When Jesy left, I remember a few people saying this should be the next Confetti single since the lyrics were fitting for an amicable breakup. Later we found out it wasn't an amicable breakup though so thankfully this wasn't released oop. And either way, I would've been mad if this was selected over "ConfettI" or "Happiness"!

This is cute. It sounded a bit dated on arrival though, this could've been on Get Weird or Glory Days. The middle-8 sounding like it's from a completely different song is a bit of a fun moment, and overall this is fine but I'm not checking for it.

The awkwardly titled "Kiss My (Uh-Oh)", Little Mix's final collaboration, was released as the fourth single from Anne-Marie's second album, Therapy. The track interpolates the 2003 hit "Never Leave You" by Lumidee.

After "Confetti" was a hit and "Heartbreak Anthem" smashed, "Kiss My (Uh-Oh)" got off to a slow start on the charts. It proved to a steady slow-burn and ended up peaking at #10 thanks to the Girl Power Remix of the song, which featured Raye, Becky Hill, and Stefflon Don.

Upon its peak, it became Little Mix's nineteenth Top 10 single. It has been certified Gold. *Sigh* this would also be Little Mix's final Top 10 single, as none of the Between Us singles took off.

I think the general sentiment is that this single felt like overkill after Little Mix had already released six other singles in the 12 months prior, which is why it took a while for it to do anything and then ended up eating up valuable airplay that the Between Us singles didn't get.

I remember being pissed as well that this was included on the standard edition of Between Us, back when it seemed like it would barely scrape Silver, while Platinum smashes like "Love Me Like You" and "Only You" were excluded. But in the end, this kind of became a hit so I guess it was fine (still doesn't make sense to be included over "Love Me Like You" though but I get why it's there in the sense that it was their most recent single).

Now that we're out of the woods, I can say that this is a fun bop. I was so unimpressed by it when it came out and I don't know what it was that made me come around to it, but I like it now. I don't think it's essential in the way that "Heartbreak Anthem" is though, so the fact that it's (potentially, for now) their final Top 10 single frustrates me, not when the Between Us singles were all great and deserved success.

"Towers" is fittingly the last ballad standing from Salute as "Good Enough" departs next.

I don't know if the group has spoken about this before, but I'm assuming it's a favourite of theirs, since the song was performed in the encore of The Salute Tour alongside "Wings". Pretty impressive for an album track! (It was also performed while "These Four Walls" wasn't so that settles which piano ballad from the album they prefer).

I'll be honest, I didn't rate this highly at all for years. Even now my score isn't that impressive, but it's actually grown on me a lot. I think I just have to be in the right mood for it because it can come off as extremely dramatic and overblown if I'm not feeling it nn, but on the right day, it's a stunning ballad. Perrie's middle-8 in particular is gorgeous.

Confetti has mostly cleared out at this stage in the rate, with "If You Want My Love" leaving next. That leaves the four singles and "Happiness" remaining.

I'd say this song was a favourite for many people on their first listen of the album, because the production is very reminiscent of '90s Max Martin. They've previously tried the sound on "Private Show", and that's personally my favourite of the two but this is good too!

I can hear where improvements could be, but that comes with trying to replicate a very iconic sound and it's not like Little Mix were working with expensive producers. So as a tribute, this is cute.

Surprised “If You Want My Love” got kicked so early! I thought that Max Martin aping would’ve made it a favorite. Ever since I revisited it for the rate, I’ve been coming around to it but I still feel it’s missing something.

The way Little Mix stopped Anne-Marie from being dropped by her label with Kiss My Uh Oh! Saving careers!
Martyrs too because that oversaturation led to the flopping of the superior “Love (Sweet Love)”, and “No”.

A Mess (Happy 4 U) - 9.1 - I really love this. I've always wished it was *slightly* faster though, I think it would improve it for sure.
Kiss My (Uh Oh) - 6.5 - This is cute but sort of inessential.
Good Enough - 9.7 - I'm really surprised this is out already! I know the girls are known for bops but this is such a beautiful ballad.
If You Want My Love - 7.8 - I love the throwback sound but I don't often seek it out.

He/Him
Kiss My (Uh Oh) could have left before and I wouldn't really have minded. It's a simple foot note in their discography and has never really been on my radar before, completely passing me by at the time of release.

Good Enough's out a smidge too early though and A Mess (Happy 4 U) could have stayed a while too, but If You Want My Love's out at just the right time. So well done on that one.

"American Boy" features a writing credit from Tich, who has co-written a number of songs for the group including "Secret Love Song", "Woman's World", and "One I've Been Missing".

This song feels like it goes hand-in-hand with "Love a Girl Right" (probably because of the opposite-gender titles and their placements on the tracklist), and I love them both.

I said this in the elimination for "Love a Girl Right" and the same applies for "American Boy" in that it's not necessarily a bulletproof single, but it's an extremely solid album track, and the girls had been desperately lacking those for the previous two albums.

It's super catchy and the frenzied second chorus is a highlight. It's just a sturdy, well-produced bop, and another signifier of why LM5 felt like the elevation they needed.

The next song out is a single, and personally I'm really shocked at it exiting already (but maybe you guys won't be nn). Any guesses?

"How Ya Doin'" was released as DNA's fourth and final single. The track was co-written by all four girls as well as Shaznay Lewis from All Saints, and was remixed with a newly recorded post-chorus plus a verse by rap royalty Missy Elliott for the single release.

The track borrows the chorus melody from Curiosity Killed The Cat's 1989 single "Name & Number", and also samples The Whatnauts' 1981 single "Help Is On the Way". I didn't know this before, but it goes perfectly in line with the throwback nature of the song.

When the tracklist for DNA was first revealed, Slick Rick was listed as a feature on this song. However, he apparently got cold feet about the collaboration and requested his verse to be removed before the album was released.

The single version was originally supposed to be released on May 6, 2013, but was released mid-week on April 15, 2013 following a leak. Unfortunately this had a big implication on the single's success. While it did peak at a respectable #16, it only spent 7 weeks on the UK chart and only just scraped a Silver certification last year.

@YourLeadSinger recalls: "I remember reading people groaning this song being a single and, when I finally heard it, thought they were crazy. What an infectious ear worm. Historically I didn’t think a feature was needed but the verse by the iconic Missy Elliott (and the remixed elements) really elevate the song. Shame the UK public didn’t agree and let it flop." Agreed on all counts!

The track went semi-viral based on their acapella renditions of the song, most famously on Ryan Seacrest's show. I've also included an iconic performance where a bug flew into Jade's hair and chaos ensues.

Also side note - this was annoyingly the only single that was left off the allegedly fan-voted version of Between Us. Frankly I refuse to acknowledge that edition so whatever!

As for the song - I really love it. The production is so full-bodied and sturdy, and it's a great song on its own but the remixed version is truly where it's at. Everything just feels elevated. The post-chorus that was added is maybe my favourite bit of the whole song! And Missy can kind of be hit-or-miss when it comes to her features, but she truly brought her A-game for this. I find that from the list of their Silver-certified/uncertified singles, this is the one that frustrates me the most because it should've been huge.

A double-whammy for DNA as its highest-rated album track "Red Planet" gets cut, beating "How Ya Doin'" by a 0.001 point! That leaves just "Wings" and "DNA" left from that album. How long can they hold on?

I'm not surprised that this one is the highest-rated DNA album track, from what I remember I think a lot of people wanted it to be a single. I do like it (that guitar riff that gets used throughout the song is a great touch) but to me, it's a really fantastic chorus surrounded by not much else. It's not a bad song though of course! To me it's just a good, solid album track.

It's also pretty amazing that they managed to get a member from one of the most successful girl groups ever to feature on their debut album! And in a bit of an iconic moment, T-Boz actually discussed selling this song "to Simon Cowell's girl group" on her reality show to fellow TLC member Chilli, who is clearly upset by it nn. Even funnier is that Jade and Leigh-Anne discussed seeing this clip (Perrie hadn't seen it) in the DNA album recap they did for Between Us.

MY SCORE: 7.5

"Joan of Arc" was released as the first promotional single from LM5. It debuted at #61 in the UK and #35 in Scotland, was certified Gold in Brazil.

A video for the song was created, but for some reason it was never released in full. I've included someone's fanmade edit at the bottom. The scenes that we got look great and I'm not sure why it wasn't released (maybe caught up in the label drama?).

This is fun. I think sometimes they walk the line in terms of getting a little too kiddie-ish when they try on this Americanized trap sound (my mind goes to "Down & Dirty" which I hate) but thankfully they don't go too overboard with this one. The second verse with the harmonized spelling of "goddess" is iconic as is Leigh-Anne's middle 8.

LOWEST SCORE: 5 x1 (@-SNS-)

2019 RATE: 31/83

It's a double-whammy for LM5 as well, as "Motivate" is out next. The track was co-written by Jade, Leigh-Anne, and Perrie. (Also a bit interesting that we lost the 2019 rate's #31, #32, and #33 tracks in this elimination post!).

I think I have to be in the right mood for this one, because on some days it's a blast (like today, where I'm questioning my 7 because it maybe could've been a bit higher) and other days I find it to be a bit grating (like when I was actually scoring it). "Rendezvous" from Confetti reminds me of "Motivate" a bit but not as good.

~

Any guesses to what the final cut will be before we reveal our Top 40?

How Ya Doin', my 11 in the last rate, missing the top 10 40 is a disaster. Little Mix weren't really on my radar and I barely listened to them in the early years, but that's the one song of theirs I always liked from the first time I saw the music video. I actually had no idea about the planned Slick Rick feature, I take it that version has never surfaced? Can't say I'm exactly sad about it though because if he hadn't pulled out we probably would have never gotten the Missy version.

Considering “How Ya Doin’?” didn’t even make the fan-edition and I forgot about it, yeah I am not surprised. I am disappointed though.

Also, not LM5 losing the tracks I actually like! Boooo!

How Ya Doin' - 6.1 - I just never really loved this, although the single version is admittedly better.
Red Planet - 9.3 - LOVE this. I do feel like this was a direct effect of their success with their version of ET on The X Factor but I'm not about it.
Joan of Arc - 6.9 - I like this, it just isn't as good as what surrounds it on the LM5 album.
Motivate - 8.8 - A bit of a bop, slight deduction for the "bitches" line.
