2019 RATE: 7/83

DNA is our first album in the rate to get fully eliminated as the title track and second single gets cut.

"DNA" was released as the second single from the album and hit #3 in the UK, proving that the success of "Wings" wasn't just a fluke. It went on to be certified Gold, and as of November 2021 has sold over 453,000 units making it their 19th biggest hit.

An "unplugged" version was included as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of the album. The track was performed on their tours up till the Glory Days Tour and has since been retired, which is a bit sad but also not entirely surprising.

"DNA" becomes the first song in our rate to fall out of the 2019 rate's Top 10, where it hit #7. A bit of a tumble given that it wasn't able to make our Top 20, but it still finishes with a great average score.

Also, this came up before with "Shout Out to My Ex", "Woman Like Me", and a few others, but the start of us saying "this Little Mix song reminds me of..." started right here with "DNA" nn. It has a lot of similarities to Katy Perry's single "E.T.", but hey, this still knocks so whatever.

While "How Ya Doin'" is my favourite song from DNA, this is easily #2. And no wonder it became our highest-rated track from the album in this rate. It has an edge that a lot of the DNA tracks lack, especially with the middle-8 and those operatic vocals. In a way it feels a bit underrated in their discography, but I think that speaks to the amount of massive hits that they have that this one gets a bit overshadowed.

BLACK MAGIC

HIGHEST SCORE: 10

MY SCORE: 8
2019 RATE: 9/83

For some reason, the rate is only starting to feel real now even though I've eliminated 80+ songs at this point because we're getting into the real heavy hitters!

"Black Magic" was released as the lead single for Get Weird. The song and its overall presentation was a marked departure from the more mature, R&B-leaning Salute. It's a big, uptempo, 80's-influenced dance-pop song, and the single cover featured the group in front of school lockers - suffice to say, they were clearly aiming for a younger demographic this time around.

It ended up paying off in a truly massive way. The song debuted at #1 in the UK and spent three weeks at the top, becoming their third #1 after "Wings". It was certified Platinum in just six months, becoming the first girl-group single in more than a decade to be certified Platinum. It has since been certified 3x Platinum for sales of over 1.8 million units, becoming their second biggest hit ever after "Shout Out to My Ex". It's also their highest-peaking track in the US at #67, and was certified Gold making it their only certified single there.

The video has almost a billion views on YouTube (!), currently sitting at 935 million views easily making it their most-watched video - their second-highest is "Shout Out to My Ex" which trails behind at 462 million views. The video features the classic high school trope of nerdy girls suddenly becoming popular after changing their looks. As a male, maybe I'm not the person to speak on this, but the messaging is just so twisted to me - I get that it's meant to be an '80s high school comedy parody but scenes such as the popular girl farting causing her boyfriend to leave her (?!) already felt dated and uncomfortable in 2015 and reflects even poorly now.

"Black Magic" received a number of high-profile performances, my favourite bring their BRITs performance in 2016. Like "Wings" at One Love Manchester, the BRITs performance of "Black Magic" is not only one of my favourite performances of theirs, but one of my favourite performances ever. The dance breaks, the structure, the spectacle of it all. They had grown so much as performers, and this was the culmination of all of their hard work. Perrie in particular, who maybe wasn't their best dancer starting out, completely holds her own here. They had had strong performances before, but this performance to me is when they entered the next level of being one of the best live acts of the past decade.

Another standout performance is the X Factor Final where they performed with Fleur East, and mashed up "Black Magic" with her hit "Sax". It's one of the best and most fun performances to ever grace the X Factor stage, and genuinely such an inspired idea for two X Factor acts to combine their two big hits and deliver a big blowout performance.

As for the song itself? Time has been kind to it, at least for me. It was certainly very jarring to hear after it came out after Salute and I think I spent a lot of time resenting it, because it felt like a regression for them. And that's not to say that it isn't true, but I think I can appreciate it now for the ironclad pop banger that it is. The '80s flourishes are really cute, and there are a lot of super catchy bits ("all the girls on the block...", the "falling in love" outro) that work well together. And once again, I'm gonna shout out the BRITs performance because that was what sealed the deal for me.

I’ll always have disdain for “Black Magic” because it’s not anything I want, from the juvenile lyrics and melodies reminding me of something Katy Perry would release to the fact it was blatantly made for the Disney Channel demographic. It’s not a horrible song just not one I like much. It reminds me of how I feel about “About You Now” by the Sugababes, a massive saccharine hit that just isn’t what I want from the group.

The “falling in love” part at the end of Black Magic is fantastic, a bit like the “so don’t call me baby” at the end of Red Dress.

LOVE ME LIKE YOU

AVERAGE: 8.599
HIGHEST SCORE: 10
x11 (@boombazookajoe, @soratami, @DJHazey, @Sally_Harper, @tylerc, @GimmeWork, @munro, @Robsolete, @Music Is Death, @Mvnl, @Serg.)
LOWEST SCORE: 5 x1 (@Purple)
MY SCORE: 8
2019 RATE: 8/83

Like "DNA" and "Black Magic", "Love Me Like You" is another track from the 2019 rate to take a tumble out of the Top 10 and finish outside the Top 20 in this rate. And in a very interesting turn of events, it finishes one spot above "Black Magic" in this rate, which is exactly how it left in the 2019 rate when both tracks left at #8 and #9!

"Love Me Like You" is a retro, '60s doo-wop song, which I feel like is a rite of passage for most girl groups. It was released as Get Weird's second single and was more of a slow-burn than "Black Magic", initially debuting at #21, but spent months bouncing around the Top 20 and peaked just outside the Top 10 at #11.

It became their second consecutive Platinum hit after "Black Magic" with combined sales of 811,000 units, and registers as their twelfth biggest hit to date!

It was also very smartly remixed as a Christmas song, and frankly they should've just re-released it in 2019 instead of releasing "One I've Been Missing" nn

Despite all of this, "Love Me Like You" was inexplicably left off the standard and digital deluxe versions of Between Us. I'm still mad about it, especially since "Kiss My (Uh-Oh)" is on there but this isn't, when it's the much bigger hit. The standard edition exclusion is one thing, but leaving it off the digital deluxe version when it still ranks in their Top 10 most popular tracks on Spotify is such a bizarre oversight to me. Sigh.

Like "Black Magic", this is a song that took its time to grow on me. Doo-wop songs can be kinda grating for me depending on my mood, especially the "sha la la la" bits in this particular song, but I can't deny how solid the chorus is now. The best part of the song for me is the final chorus where it overlaps with the middle-8, it's one of those pop music things that can always make a song better!
