Nn me seeing all the comments calling for this to go: "Stop stop she's already dead!"

"Between Us" was released as the first and only promotional single from its parent album. It was co-written by the group, and lyrically it speaks of the girls' love for each other. The second verse features references to some of their singles as well which is a cute touch.

It debuted at #92 and managed a peak of #47. It's also the highest-selling Between Us song as of November 2021 with 63,000 units sold, despite not being an official single.

On December 2, Little Mix officially announced their hiatus alongside a video for "Between Us". I've said it before and it's worth repeating, I don't think there's been a single pop group that handled a hiatus/breakup as cleanly as Little Mix did. There was no shock or surprise when the tour was over, but rather a beautifully and carefully worded message shared six months before the hiatus was actually supposed to begin, therefore giving everyone time to come to terms with it once the tour wrapped up.

As for the video itself, it's a montage of behind-the-scenes clips of the girls. It's a little DIY and I hate the frame ratio, and I also think the video would be way more effective it had used clips from their 10 years together rather than mostly using 2021 footage, but I get why for obvious reasons.

"Between Us" also received the album's only televised performance, on Graham Norton. It's beautiful, not much to say there. It was also the last ever song the group performed, on the final date of the Confetti Tour. "Sweet Melody" was the original encore, but the girls surprised everyone by coming back out a second time dressed in Little Mix merch to sing "Between Us" one more time.

I really wish this had gotten the full single treatment. I don't think I've heard a "closing of a chapter" song succeed as much as this one does.

Personally I think the sentiment of this song is incredibly touching, and to me it only works because Little Mix's connection and bond has always seemed more genuine and real compared to most pop groups. It's gorgeously written ("when the curtains close and all of the lights go down / safe to say I will stay, I will always stick around" low-key destroyed me on my first listen), and I think the production is absolutely stunning. It's a classy, melodic, beautiful pop song.

One thing I love as well is that they take turns singing the chorus, starting with Perrie, then Jade, and ending with Leigh-Anne. I thought that was a lovely touch for such a lovely song.

SECRET LOVE SONG, PT. II

MY SCORE: 9.5
2019 RATE: 10/83

"Secret Love Song, Pt. II" is a piano reinterpretation of the original, with new lyrics and Jason Derulo thankfully being excluded.

I mentioned this before but this feels like a brand-new song to me which is why I included it separately in this rate, in comparison to some of their other acoustic renditions which are simply just that.

The girls have made it no secret that they prefer this version, as it's the one they've chosen to sing on all of their tours. And despite it not being released officially alongside the original, it was included on Between Us on all of the editions, while the million-selling single version was only included as a bonus track on some of the editions.

The track has been certified Silver for sales of 241,000 units.

I think mostly everyone can agree that this is the Little Mix ballad. Stripping the production down gives the queer-coded lyrics a whole new meaning and make the overall experience that much more affecting. Removing Jason does wonders too, no surprise there.

The only thing that held me back from giving it a 10 is that I wish there were a few group vocals/harmonies rather than each girl just having a solo part (and I think that's why I prefer "Between Us" at this point), but other than that, it's a stunner.

“Salute” really is that bitch. I recently spent a half hour commute listening to it on repeat. Wish the video version was put on the (physical) Between Us instead of the single edit as it has all the remixed elements but includes the intro and outro, which are essential honestly.

For the second time, "Wasabi" becomes the highest-placing album track, but "Happiness" put up a good fight!

"Happiness" was released as the second promo single from Confetti and charted at #49. While it wasn't the highest-peaking promo single from the album, it spent 3 weeks on the chart while the others charted for 1 week, so I'm choosing to believe the GP was trying to say something.

This is fantastic. The strings! The vocals! The garage beat! The drama! This was such a wasted opportunity for a single and clearly everyone (mostly) agrees with it earning a well-deserved placement in our Top 10, and beating out two Confetti singles in the process. Not to mention stopping just short of a 9 average!

A few people have pointed out that it's similar to "no tears left to cry" which is fair, but I don't mind because this is a way more successful ripoff of an Ariana song than "Woman Like Me" nn.

I think a lot of people were hoping for this one as the fourth single, but as I mentioned in the elimination post for "Confetti", I think "Confetti" was more single-ready in the sense that they could remix it with a rapper. "Happiness" is more of an entity on its own and I wouldn't want it to get chopped up.

But that being said, this should've been the second single over "Holiday", sorry not sorry girls. "Holiday" is cute but cute next to gorgeous and all that.

Jade mentioned in the Between Us album-by-album breakdowns that she loves this song and wanted to shoot a video for it in Brazil with shirtless men in the rain, so basically we lost.

Happiness is THE ultimate “single that never was” for any act ever. It’s so infectious and is a great one to sing loudly off key in your kitchen to. “YEAH SOMETIMES TEARS FALL I MUST CONFESS” - I love how that is sung. The melody and harmonies are on point. And ending the chorus with “I found the love in me” just radiates happiness. Ideally this should have been a U.K. #1 single for multiple weeks and should have been at least top 5 in this rate, but I’m very glad it’s made it this far.

LOWEST SCORE: 2.5 x1 (@munro)

2019 RATE: 5/83

"Power" was released as the 4th and final single from Glory Days, and was remixed to include rapper Stormzy. It also becomes the first song in the rate to break a 9 average!

"Power" was massive for a 4th single, so much so that it actually outperformed the previous single "No More Sad Songs" which I feel like is a rarity. It's their 4th biggest hit ever with combined chart sales of 1,340,000 units, and initially debuted at #27 before peaking at #6.

It went viral on TikTok in 2021, and is currently their 3rd most popular song on Spotify behind "Heartbreak Anthem" and "Secret Love Song" (which also went viral for a bit).

This is a chaotic bop. I really did not 'get' it when the album first came out and was flabbergasted when it was picked to be a single (but I also felt like Glory Days in general was kind of lacking in terms of big obvious hit singles), but the live performances of the song helped it click for me and made me realize how massive it really was.

My unpopular opinion is that I find Stormzy's verse to be a bit clunky, but based on anecdotal experiences I've read on here, he was actually instrumental in making the song as huge as it was, so good for him. (In any case, he looks delicious in the video).

And speaking of the video, it was directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who has shot videos for basically every Big Pop Girl ever. Each girl gets her own setup, with Jade's setup featuring Drag Race stars Willam, Alaska, and Courtney Act, and the video is centred around a feminist movement with the final scenes of the video replicating a Women's March. The girls' mothers make cameos at the end of the video as well. Also can I just highlight Leigh-Anne for a second.

Those boots. Whew.

For me, what stops the video from being great is the lack of choreography. While it's obviously not required (but most definitely welcomed), for a song with a drop as prominent as the one in "Power", it lends itself to some amazing dance sequences that would really take the video to the next level. What makes the situation worse is that the choreography they performed for the live performances is incredible and should've been preserved in the video in some form. A wasted opportunity.

"Power" got its big moment on TV in the X Factor UK finale, where it was performed alongside "Reggaetón Lento". It's an absolutely bulletproof showcase, unfortunately marred by some truly atrocious camerawork. It basically cuts away for all the choreography! So annoying. The girls were also set to perform this song on the Britain's Got Talent finale, but pulled out to perform "Wings" at One Love Manchester instead.

Our final word goes to our 11-giver @JakobVision22: "It was a three-horse race for my 11. Though Heartbreak Anthem was my most played song by any artist in 2021, and Sweet Melody was my second most played song of 2021 by any artist, the fact that Power still has such an effect on me after nearly 6 years says it all. The former two songs are absolutely epic but conventional, while Power has some of the most intense and rapid-fire verses I've heard in a mainstream pop song (plus the nonsensical amazingness of "motorbike, motorbike, bike, bike, bike, bike, bike, bike WHOOP"). Do I dare say some tiny tiny hints of Xenomania inspiration, too? Either way, it's absolute pop perfection."

NO MORE SAD SONGS

"No More Sad Songs" was released as the third single from Glory Days. It was remixed to include Machine Gun Kelly for the single release.

"Oops" was originally lined up to be the third single from the album, even getting a preview performance on X Factor alongside "Touch", but thankfully the pop gods worked their magic and it was dumped for the much better option.

"No More Sad Songs" was unfortunately the only Glory Days single to miss the Top 10, but still kept up their Top 20 streak peaking at #15. It was another Platinum smash for them, and is currently their 10th biggest selling single as of November 2021 with 848,000 units.

The video was, by Jade's admission, something purposefully unexpected. It was filmed in Nashville at a bar and is Western-themed, with cowboy hats, mechanical bulls, and the whole shebang. Essentially a far cry from the tropical-house pop goodness of the actual song.

Somehow it works though! It's a cute concept, and it's all worth it for the incredible slo-mo shots we get, my favourite being:

little-mix-no-more-sad-songs.gif

Stunning.

We also got the iconic Jesy no gif:

tumblr_oob6qmSTE41ultscno3_540.gifv

This song is truly fabulous. We all love a good tears-on-the-dancefloor anthem and this one was right on trend for 2016. The post-chorus break is infectious, and the entire song is just a perfect slice of pop.

My only regret is the single remix... Machine Gun Kelly takes out Jesy's beautifully subdued middle-8 which the song needs to make the final chorus pop even harder. It's what I was saying about "Happiness" and it applies to "No More Sad Songs" as well, it's a perfect pop entity on its own and the rap just detracts from the gorgeousness.

@YourLeadSinger shares similar thoughts and explains: "This one hurt to score but as I’ve been combining album versions and single versions, I have to be fair. The album version is perfect, tells a story with a narrator who becomes self-aware but the single version shits on that by removing the Middle-8 and replacing it with a terrible rap. Machine Gun Kelly was NOT needed at all. His verse ruins the storyline and his flow is shit (unlike Stormzy). The additional effects are just okay but personally I didn’t feel like the original needed any changes."

It's a conundrum because a revamped single version most always adds to sales and chart peaks, and surely the new version helped boost the song to its #15 peak which it may not have reached otherwise. I just wish they could've gotten a more appropriate rapper or even another vocalist that actually fit and understood the vibe of the song.

One of 2019's tied winners makes its exit at #5, meaning we're already in for a new result for our winner this year!

"Wasabi" was co-written by Jade and MNEK. It details the group's frustration with the media attacks on them at the time, namely by Piers Morgan, and they don't beat around the bush:

I love the way you talk about me
Look at how far it got me
The shit the papers write about me
I fold it up like origami
Like "she ain't wearing no clothes"
"When she going solo?"
"I bet they're gonna break up"
But what the hell do you know?

(I feel like there's a level of irony or something now about the fact that Jesy delivers these lines nn but anyway...)

It was never released as a single, much to the frustration of many of us, but went viral around the beginning of 2020 and ended up getting certified Silver with combined sales of 245,000, making it their third biggest album track after "Oops" and "Love Me Or Leave Me".

The girls also decided to include it as the final track on the digital deluxe version of Between Us over some actual singles as well.

Jade has been one of the song's biggest advocates. It was her pick for her Between Us picture disc alongside "Mr Loverboy", and I believe she was behind the creation of the video. It was shot on tour and is actually quite decent for a quick video! There are a lot of fun moments. (Also if her lines weren't ironic enough now, Jesy shooting one scene in her dressing room by herself while the others filmed multiples scenes with their dancers says even more).

This song... is absolutely insane. It's a wild mixture of different genres, melding club beats with a punk-rock refrain and spoken-word (???). And somehow, it works brilliantly.

I liked this song when the album came out, but it took me a while to see what others saw from Day 1. I certainly didn't understand those who were saying it should've been a single.

Only now, years later, do I realize that it was such a massive missed opportunity to not release this as the lead single from LM5. Yes, maybe it doesn't represent the album entirely, but they were in a position to release literally anything they wanted after the unstoppable few years they had with Get Weird and Glory Days, and it would've smashed. It would've been perfect timing to drop something as unexpected and brilliant as "Wasabi" and I'm 99% certain the risk would've paid off. Alas.

We've got commentary for this one! @YourLeadSinger had a similar journey to me, and says "A bop. Well deserved the hype. I have changed my mind and I think this should’ve been the first single for LM5. It makes a bold statement. I’m glad it got a video afterwards but it should’ve been a full single."

@Dijah. has me rolling: "They came into the studio mad as hell to record this. They put a gun up to the producers’ heads. They served cunt and Piers Morgan died."

@cleggar spills: "Touch, SLS, Sweet Melody, No More Sad Songs were all in contention for my 11 but I had to give it to Wasabi. It's just oozing sass and attitude, and feels so uniquely Little Mix that nobody else could have pulled it off. It's a masterpiece of a song. Controversial take, but if they were planning on the post-album-add-a-feature trick they usually do with 3rd/4th singles, I wanted RuPaul to feature. Turn it into the shadiest, bitchiest, fuck-you anthem we all deserve." This would've been iconic!
