Listen, she’s a fun girl, but as @johnny_tsunami mentions, it’s another horror film ultimately let down by a PG-13 rating. All the gags are basically in the trailers (I wouldn’t say it’s a spoiler that there is also no dancing beyond what’s in the trailers), I don’t recall a single actual scare, and it misses the opportunity to really dig into the fun campiness of recent classics like Ma, Malignant and Barbarian. I still had a good time, laughed a bunch, and can’t imagine anyone not being entertained… but the promo campaign got me hyped in a way that this really doesn’t live up to.
What you don’t know about Ms. M3gan Thee Doll is…
She sings. She’s a singer. Singing is what she does. That actually did gag me and I left the theater saying:
I've read like five different reviews/reactions to this movie and none of them feel like they're talking about the same movie. I'm fucking ready for whatever the hell this is turning out to be.
M3GAN is A LOT of fun. The trailer definitely shows most of the fun stuff but leaves out two other high camp moments. One involves M3GAN randomly belting out a well known pop song from 2011 after an incident and her playing another song on the piano towards the end.
Comparing this and Malignant does both a disservice; I think the latter is a better film and fully leans into the camp factor whereas M3GAN is a film about grief and loss, our society as a whole’s over reliance on technology and the loss of human connection. It only really nails two of those aspects really well and muddles the other.
Putting this behind a spoiler cut because I’m genuinely curious if after people see the film they picked up on this:
In the scene in the woods when Brandon steals M3GAN and he throws her to the ground, he starts taking her shoes off. Did anyone else get the feeling he was going to try and rape the doll?
See it with a packed audience as I’m sure it’ll be much more fun because of the reactions. My screening only had 15 of us total and other than my friend and I, everyone else was at least 50+ in age and stayed silent the entire film.
This film just seems like a theatrically released Black Mirror episode, no? I'm kind of curious to watch it but I think i'll wait for it to be on streaming.
Just watched it and I'm glad I didn't watch the trailer beforehand. I had a blast but it did feel like they really went all out on the This Is For The Trailers scenes, and the stuff in between was... oddly paced. Fortunately it's mostly very engaging and the highs are very high. Incredible way to kick off the year.
