Madonna - 15th Album

Yeah, I also have high hopes for how her vocals are produced/handled on the upcoming album. Because as much as I love Madame X, I have a lot of feelings about the way the lady sounds.

For one, I never bought into the idea that she was singing through gritted teeth on God Control because she was just So AnGrY. I'm happy to be shown some comment from Madonna herself on the topic, but it always sounded like she just felt like recording with her grillz on.

There was also a lot of "she sounds autotuned and pitch corrected and distorted because that's what Mirwais does, that's this thing, go listen to Music and American Life." On those albums it felt intelligently applied, and those moments were contrasted with moments of very stark, naked vocal work. On Madame X it just felt indiscriminate and like it had less to do with accenting the point of the song and more to do with making her sound good. And it keeps the album from sounding like the million-bucks aural experience any Madonna should be.

I’m pretty sure she did say this herself dd

Edit, from her Mojo Magazine interview:

At the beginning of the song God Control, there’s this particular kind of contained aggression you muster…

Yes. I wanted to sing as if someone had wired my jaw shut and l wasn’t allowed to speak but I had to speak and I was coming from a very angry place.

She’s said she doesn’t actually enjoy singing with her grillz in because it’s too difficult. She also brought up autotune and said she likes the contrast with more organic sounds. What’s different is the way it’s used more recently is more akin to hip-hop, instead of the way it was being used on previous albums.

I think the vocal production on her more recent collaborations (and on The Celebration Tour) prove she sounds just fine without it, seeing as it’s the same exact vocal producer she’s been working with since Madame X

I think there was a case being made back when the album came out for the muffled vocals being a through line with the stitched lips, which I always thought was kind of tragically beautiful considering the inspiration behind that one cover. I was never offended by that choice of vocal production anyway, even if the aforementioned interpretation is reading too much into it. Let me live in my fantasy!
