Madonna - 15th Album

I find the overly negative response to this fascinating. I think people have a visceral reaction to Madonna being knowingly kitschy or gaudy, probably because she actively veered away from that in the 90s and 00s when most of us became fans. But she still that side to her and it's nice to indulge every so often. I mean, her last album was still Madame X which was pretty heavy and ~artistic. It's fine to have a trashy bop every so often.

Sam Smith is just… not very good. The non-existent taste level mama. The Pitchfork review of their last album that pointed out their voice sounds the exact same on every song really comes to mind. Even on this you can hear that plaintive whine that contaminates everything. It makes something that should be absurd and entertaining utterly colourless and empty. I think mum gets a little led by example, especially when she’s gone far harder in the past. Just a limp attempt all the way round. More… Boss Baby than “Boss Bitch”.

The song is for sure not a masterpiece but it is also not pretentious and very much self aware. The negative response here feels excessive. This is camp not trash. Saying that even girl gone wild it’s a better outcome as I saw today it’s quite a statement. The lyrics aren’t great but it’s just a silly song with a clear intention to piss of prudes also with its carefreeness.
