Madonna: The Discography Rate - COMPLETE

  1. Same. It's one of the worst offenders of beige balladonna ever.

  2. The segue from Sanctuary to Bedtime Story is an amazing micro moment, Kelela repeated the same trick years later with Better into LMK. Truly.......

    2015 PLACEMENT: N/A
    HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 5 (@Vasilios @HEARTCORE @tylerc904 @JMRGBY @Mr Blonde)
    LOWEST SCORE: 1 x 2 (@Dangerous Maknae @letuinmybackdoor)
    MY SCORE: 6/10

fffffFFFFF I WISH I HAD GIVEN THIS A HIGHER SCORE. When doing my own ballot, I would suddenly get caught in a fit of trying to be strict about having a relative scale and I think some songs suffered in this ruthlessness, because this is honestly great. What a lovely, strange little pocket of sounds that manages to wonderfully embellish the world of Madame X. The way the vocal effects pull and stretch at Madonna's vocals like they're taffy to be spread across that atmospheric but glitchy production. The choral backing vocals just take it to another level. It sounds so good. If the vocals are taffy, then the rest of the song is another kind of moreish candy. I could live in that 'scape all day.

The song title appears to come from the style of music that it takes its inspiration from, which hails from Cape Verde like a lot of Madonna's influences for the parent album. In terms of lyrics, it kind of hits a special sweet spot too. It's basically about dancing through your pain (Hmm... I could have sworn I've heard that phrase somewhere else recently but for the life for me I can't remember where. Must not have left much of an impression.) while simultaneously cauterising the loss of several peers by acknowledging that we'll always have their music, and if you're always remembered, then you're always alive. I don't know. There's a bittersweet tinge in hearing Madonna list off all the incredible musicians that have died in recent times, with some of them even going from birth to death in her adult life. I wonder what her epitaph will look like in music. Late night thoughts for a late night elimination.

Anyway! BOP. And bonus points for not mentioning her 1991 Oscars date. I would have actually been okay with this lasting longer, but then I also didn't give it a higher score, so I have only myself to blame. Oh well!

  4. How dare you.

  5. Funana genuinely makes me emotional. It hits a weird place in me and I can’t ever quite identify why.

  6. Take a Bow is in my top ten Madonna songs. It’s so beautiful.

Also I knew Funana was going to be out pretty soon but I’ve always thought it was a really emotional song in spite of its choppy lyrics.

Tomorrow, we continue to shovel through the 6/10s. I always knew this would probably be the least interesting part of the rate as the songs that are laughably bad are gone but we haven't started laying into the proper favourites just yet, but I'm still having fun bizarrely enough. Y'all wouldn't believe how much easier having no commentary makes things, and does anyone really feel like they're losing anything without it? The answer is of course NO. See you tomorrow for more cuts!

  8. Take A Bow is probably one of my all time favourite songs by any artist. It came excruciatingly close to being my 11.

  9. Funana would have gotten a 7 from me if the vocals sounded better (I gave it a 6). This is one (and only) case in which the vocal processing does get in the way. I used to think the lyrics were lazy but I've since revised that opinion. It's an interesting sounding song.

  10. Losing Funana so soon is senseless. It’s lovely. I actually think it would have served really well as an album closer - it really typifies the strange, warm of loveliness Madame X (well, most of Madame X...)

  11. Of course @RJF has to sneak in that severe drag on Chromatica, because of course ddd.

  12. Take a Bow is definitely an example of two titans of contemporary music (Madonna and Babyface) coming together and giving their absolute best and not coasting or resting on their laurels.

  13. Oooh this hurts. Funana was an immediate highlight for me on Madame X (the album itself took me quite awhile to truly appreciate). It's so weird, especially the way her vocal is stretched and released like a rubber band. The melody, the themes, the lyrics are really affecting and have only become more of a tonic in the year since it dropped. Let's go dancing is such a simple phrase but carries so much healing and catharsis.

Back Up That To The Beat (7.5; an underscore tbh!) is excellent and also weird as hell. I love that percussion heavy batshit production. The Madame X bonus-bonus cuts are vital to the Madame X experience.

I'm a sucker for Dallas Austin's production style. Like, I think the majority of his discography could be labeled "rough edit" with how sparse and sharp his work is ddd. So of course I love Let Down Your Guard (8.5). It's bizarre and very sensual, and wouldn't be out of place on CrazySexyCool or FanMail. It would have been a great 1-2-3 punch opener to Bedtime Stories along with Survival and Secret.

It's a vibe and if you get it you get it, if you don't you don't or whatever.

  18. God damn it. Funana is such a bittersweet, wonky song, and I'll never understand the hatred that Fag Palz (feat. Katy Perry) have for it. I definitely should've scored it higher too.

  19. The sentiment behind Funana is very sweet and extremely endearing, but I just hate how she sounds on it.
