Madonna: The Discography Rate - COMPLETE

  1. If the top 5 isn’t this then mistakes have been made:

There are plenty of options to round out the top 10, but I’d personally appreciate any of these being there:
    Borderline
    American Life
    Ray Of Light
    Papa Don’t Preach
    Erotica

  2. You must be new here!

I think Express will reach the low top Ten or maybe even be squeezed out barely right before. It's one of her defining anthems.

    These Top 10s/20s/40s are interesting...

  4. Nah just curious how perceptions have shifted in the near ten years I've been in this pink hell hole! Glad to know I've made an impression on you.

  5. 'Crazy For You' is the 80s.

I've rediscovered Bedtime Story the last few days and oh my, the exquisiteness, the delicacy, the beauty. I definitely underscored it with my 9.

  11. I was kidding. <3

Crazy For You is a great 80s power ballad, MADE for slow dancing, but it never feels particularly Madonna when I consider it in her wider canon? I forget about it. It's kinda her Especially For You (but far superior). It kinda always knocks/resonantes more than I remember, and a little dash of cheese isn't a bad thing. She also sounds great on it.

  12. I’ll join the club in saying that Express Yourself has always been a lower-tier 80s Madonna song for me. It’s a perfectly serviceable fun pop song with a great melody (kinda like Born This Way is ddd) but I’d never really seek it out to play.

I hate fuckin' waiting, but I love "Waiting", so it's sad to see it leave. This leaves Erotica with just four singles and one album track, that one album track being "Thief Of Hearts", which... isn't really much of a surprise. A banging house beat with Madonna threatening grievous bodily harm over it? Where do I put my 10/10?

That said, "Waiting" is a more than worthy runner up that crown and more than worthy of Top 70 as well. Although it dropped a bit since 2015, it comes back in 2020 with an improved score, showing just how much more competitive the scoring has been with every song in play at the same time. But yes, love this. Erotica frequently billed as some freaky sex album like she's just rapping safe words over the porn noises, but so much of it is about everything surrounding sex. The hesitation, the giving over of oneself, the intimacy, the exchange in trust, how emotional investment changes the experience. Here, we have a classic Madonna double entendre where the song lyrically is about standing on a cliff edge, waiting for your man to either come back or realise you've been there the entire time so your heart doesn't get broken, but sonically... one can't help but think Miss Thing is maybe just a lil worked up and waiting with knees far apart for something a little less chaste. Sometimes the dick is just too bomb. Oop!

Other notable things: the track's title is actually sampled from the iconic "Justify My Love", just in case you felt like you had heard the word "waiting" in that seductive croak before now. And of course, the song itself was then a sample... of sorts, for occasional regional bonus track and Madonna Discography Rate 2020 expulsion "Did You Do It?" but I'm not gonna talk about that dot gif. The song also has a remix featuring Everlast, the front man of House Of Pain. I guess that production was so hot everyone wanted a piece. Can you blame them? I have included both aforementioned remixes below. They're... both absolute filth, to be honest. Enjoy!

This will be the last time the thread officially acknowledges "Did You Do It?"

  14. Thief of Hearts is one of my least favorites on Erotica (still an 8) and yet it has surpassed all the great Erotica album tracks.

  19. Waiting is superior to Thief of Hearts but I love them both.

  20. I'd return any top 20 list that didn't include Burning Up to the Linda that tried to sell me such wish-quality trash.
