Madonna: The Discography Rate - COMPLETE

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by RJF, Apr 19, 2020.

  1. The fado version of Secret that the musicians did in the theatre for the Madame X Tour was so gorgeous. I really wish she’d performed the song herself in the show.

Music Is Death, Push, rav4boy and 5 others like this.
  2. The official Top 20 is just moments (okay, probably several drunken hours) from being revealed.

I hope this fellow brunette doesn't go out next. She's a fighting bitch, too.

  3. Another 9.5 that has me wondering why it didn't get a 10.

Honestly though? Secret having legs in this rate is my pop justice.

Music Is Death, rav4boy, Maki and 8 others like this.
  4. Bedtime Stories is an absolute masterpiece, I gave Human Nature 9.5 and it’s not even in my top 5 from that album. Such an excellent, underrated album.

  5. I’m not that fussed about charts, but seeing it go to number one earlier this year was so cool.

  6. Human Nature deserved Top 20. Disrespectful fuks.

  7. I like Secret but it's definitely not the best Bedtime Stories track justice for Bedtime Story!!!!!

R27, Mr Blonde, nikkysan and 3 others like this.
  8. An 11 contender for sure, I wanted this to make top 10.

  9. Yeah, Human Nature was one of like 5 or so songs I was thinking of throwing my 11 to. It's essential Madonna.

  10. I consider Secret to be one of the less exciting songs in the album...

Are y'all gagged? I'm a bit gagged. I thought this was a dead cert for Top 20, but looking back at the voting history, the highest it ever seemed to climb was to #16, and the lowest it went was to #24, so it was always going to be in this vicinity, I guess. What a cruel position at this point in the rate though, to just be shut out of a threshold. This leaves the title track from Like A Prayer as its sole remaining track. But then, we knew it would come down to that, didn't we?

It maybe feels like a bit of a cop out, but I'm not sure there is much to say about "Express Yourself" as a song because everything it is, is pretty plain to see. You might say it expresses itself fairly well ;) A classic stormer of a chorus, sure, but for me the real story is in Madonna's vocal delivery in the verses which just feels so... desperate? No, not desperate. Urgent. Like the nature of what she is sharing with us is so important that it's bursting out of her. It's not surprising that it's been pitched down in performances on later tours, because it sounds like it would have been a challenging song to sing even when it was in her 80s range (and performing it every night probably contributed to her voice deteriorating in 1990!) let alone when her voice continued to change in later years. Let me get my own score out of the way: listening to the track, I don't regret it. It's actually only when I watch it performed during Blond Ambition or the VMAs performance where I think I hear something that sounds like a 10/10. The studio version has always felt like the last hurrah for all those slightly more bubblegum 80s hits, which is great, but not entirely my bag.

However, it's easily one of Madonna's most memorable singles. Being the second punch when "Like A Prayer" is the first is a tough act, but "Express Yourself" more than stands up to the challenge. It's basically an ode to self-expression, which was basically Madonna's M.O. back then and remains her M.O. to this day, but having it be specifically aimed at women feels a lil bit different, doesn't it? You can sometimes forget how iconoclastic the idea of women being powerful and in charge was back then, but it was artists like Madonna (and of course Janet in the exact same year) that were really redefining women's roles in pop music. "Express Yourself" basically encourages the listener to always realise that you don't need to live a miserable life of compromise and quietness for it to have meaning, and that you should be fully aware of how much you're worth and what you offer. I think this also ties back into how Madonna was at peak disillusionment with her faith at the time too. So much of religion, in terms of doing it correctly, seems to revolve around a lot of restriction and servitude to nothing, and "Express Yourself" is maybe the apex of Madonna realising that the only person she had to make happy was herself, and for that to happen, you need to be honest with yourself about what you want.

There was also that slight issue with Lady Gaga in 2011, but... I feel like we're all homosexual enough to be well versed in that particular trauma. I'll just pass over to 11/10 giver @CasperFan to explain their choice:

"Just the perfect pop song and will probably always be my favourite Madonna song. Iconic and I think the song that epitomises Madonna the most-powerful, passionate vocals and a killer tune with incredible production. This is my Madonna and one that I’ve missed over the last 15 years or so. I wish the 7” version was available digitally because it is the best version-more oomph that the album version. I cry at the hybrid mess used on Celebration."

Anyway. Everything in the Top 50 of this rate is essential pop music, but "Express Yourself" in particular is essential pop music. Directed by David Fincher, the video is one of the most expensive pop videos of all time and is... low-key screaming out for a remaster to fix these demonic brightness/contrast issues but still, it's iconic. Inspired by the film Metropolis, Madonna appears to be part of the hierarchy oppressing the proletariat from the skyscrapers above, until her pussy picks out the one with the most defined set of abs to seemingly make his way up to her boudoir and sex her on the floor, thus toppling the patriarchy. I've simplified it a bit, but the video is one of Madonna's most intricate statements on gender roles and the power imbalances between them, and how she spends the entire video flipping them back and forth between her being strong and being weak and how both are valid traits in both genders. Nothing wrong with being on your knees or chained to the bed if you want to be. The video is legitimately used as an example when gender is studied in media, and the image of Madonna in the suit, grabbing her crotch, is... well, iconic.

Another thing that's iconic is the 1989 treatment for the live performance, which I feel might be peak stage Madonna. It kind of comes back to a lot of what we say about M's performance style; she isn't some gymnastic dancer pulling acrobatic moves, and she's not got a forty-octave range, but she's just a fantastic all rounder, maybe the best to ever do it, and the star power that lashes off of her during the opening number to Blond Ambition, and at the 1989 VMAs, is off the charts. Maybe her most arresting routine. The attitude. The song was also performed during The Girlie Show, Re-Invention, and MDNA, where it was mashed-up with "Born This Way" because after dragging her publicity for most of the beginning of 2012, Madonna kept it cute and cut Gaga a royalty cheque from her tour. Enjoy!

    And that's your Top 20.

    Iconic.

  16. Express Yourself - 8.5. The lyrical sentiment is great, the melody is dynamic, the vocals are perfection but it's slightly let down by the production.

I have only two songs left with a lower score.

  17. See, I’d have voted Express Yourself as my 11.
