Madonna

I raised an eyebrow with that post. It all seems a bit 'thanks to me'! Why mention conditions in a Malawian orphanage?

I dunno. She's clearly an incredible Mother and I wish she was my Mum but...
I would think considering it's a huge part of their story together it makes sense...I mean she is just stating facts...it's a lovely post about her son, does it have to be disected and criticised, I don't think so.

Yes.

And anyone liking and agreeing with your post does not get it. If she said something that had questionable context within the LGBTQIA+ community, or the community of HIV activism, she would be held accountable. I get that some of you are British/English/European, but she's an American popstar, and when her words invoke tropes of anti-Black racism, that should be addressed. She and anyone can just as easily replace "he's articulate" with "he's extremely passionate about / committed to his points", etc, which places less focus on his ability to articulate ideas and more on his desire to articulate, which removes the racial implications. Just like when someone on this site said that I only "knew big words because I saw them on the SAT"...and not because I actually read texts and knew them personally.

I feel so many people of color that aren't American speak on things like this when their experience with racism is distinctly non-American. Madonna is from the Midwest state of Michigan, lol. Her approach to race cannot be excised from her consumption as an artist because it's part of who she is, no matter how old she grows or the people with whom she interacts. If you're not American then it's not your place to refute how her words are received.

I was was referring to the fact that she stated she found him in an orphanage drinking coke out of a baby bottle and wearing a diaper ? How is that racist? That is what happened, her experience when she met her son? And btw I do get it.

I get the impression that Madonna's activism hasn't evolved much since the early 90s. I don't think she is intentionally racist but it seems as though she hasn't understood how issues have evolved over the last 30 years.

It's not just her - I'm a lot younger than Madonna and I'm still having to check myself or really stop and think before I post or react to something. The time in which we're raised and the values/norms it instills in us can be challenging to change because most of the time we don't give them a second thought.

Hopefully she has people in her circle who can speak truth to her and explain why the optics are bad - despite her good intentions.

Honestly, even on top of the context of racism (which I’ll never fully understand because I’m not American though the best I can do is to listen), I find it extremely crass to remind your child that “you found him drinking coke out of a baby bottle with no diaper in an orphanage.” It’s like… was there a need to say that, no matter how true it is? I really hope she doesn’t tackle her musings on her experiences in Malawi in the documentary.

Speaking of her acting, I found Dangerous Game fairly torturous to watch but there were moments in her performance where I thought, "Wow, she IS a talented actress."

No such moments in Next Best Thing and Swept Away, unfortunately.
