Madonna

A core text

This interview... is genuinely like someone from the 2020s was beamed in to try and fix the problems in 1990. One of the best times a popstar has ever been in the hotseat in terms of truly seminal interviews. Ahead of her time, ahead of her world, and determined to make a new one in the future she already felt she was in. Queen. She is 1000 % amazing.
That energy and conviction.
Bless her.

But also the interviewer was pretty good. It was an informative and respectful discourse.

Ugh, Bad Girl only gets more gut-wrenching and heartbreaking as time goes by, doesn't it? The lyrics are such a stroke of genius, they express the protagonist's self-hatred and crippling lack of self-confidence so well. Drowning out those feelings ("I don't wanna feel blue") by indulging in bad behaviour, hiding parts of who you are and being convinced that people would be disgusted if they knew "the real you" ("I always feel the need to hide my feelings from you / Is it me or you that I'm afraid of?"), wanting to course-correct but failing ("I tell myself I'll show you what I'm made of") which results in even more self-loathing ("I know I don't deserve you") ... There is just so much to unpack here. She must have been in a pretty dire state, or be an insanely empathic person, or both, to have been able to write that song. And her mournful delivery! People often rat on Madonna's vocals but there are very few singers who are more emotive than she is, and Bad Girl is a prime example of that.

In short: a triumph of a song - why don't we talk about it more?

Yes, the video is iconique, but I'm going through some stuff and wanted to focus only on the - relatable - song as such.

The video is an absolute masterpiece and definitely her most cinematic work ever. The only reason it never gets mentioned in the annals of her best videos and even best videos of the time I feel is because it doesn't feed the generally agreed narrative of "Madonna went too far!!" from that period. The song and video both tackle the emotional consequences of sex in such a compassionate, nuanced way that I would say were simply too self-lacerating for people to comprehend.

Which is a shame as it's arguably one of the most actually provocative statements of her career and her performance in the video is superb - self-loathing mixed with achingly vulnerability.

I love that the video is an homage to the film Looking for Mr. Goodbar which was so controversial in the ‘70s, and remains elusive as it has only ever been issued on VHS and Laserdisc (!!) and apparently the music rights have held it back from DVD and Blu-Ray releases. It occasionally pops up on streaming or YouTube.

Bad Girl is a more cerebral and spiritual adaptation of the story with the added element of Christopher Walken as an angel. It really is one of Madonna and David Fincher’s best videos. It doesn’t seem to get enough attention.

The fact that it was not featured on the Celebration compilation is a crime.

That sounds like the perfect combination.

Throw in a hot bear and it's even better.
