Madonna

I was just reading the wiki entry for GHV2 and it broke the record for preorders in the UK at the time with 750,000 copies shipped. Presumably they expected some degree of success relative to The Immaculate Collection. To enter at #2 and sell only 88,000 copies in its first week must have been a shocker!

I was disappointed with the lack of success of both GHV2 and Celebration.

Will Madonna ever have a massive career encompassing compilation album or will The Immaculate Collection overshadow anything in the future?

I think Greatest Hits in general are pretty dead. That said, if the biopic does happen, I imagine there will be another career retrospective but I honestly can't imagine it being that different to Celebration tracklist-wise. What extra will go on it? Bitch, I'm Madonna probably. Medellin, maybe? Hopefully a surprise hit from her next album?

Over a quarter of the entire top 100 UK albums currently are greatest hits so this isn’t true - at least for legacy acts like Madonna. I don’t get why she isn’t constantly on the chart with Celebration when Elvis, Elton, MJ, Oasis, etc are with Greatest Hits sets (some of which aren’t even their best Greatest Hits sets). Even Pitbull has a greatest hits on the chart!

Yes my assumption was that any film soundtrack might do well on the chart but I wouldn’t want to choose that tracklist!

Do we know why the GHV2 was not called the Immaculate Collection Volume 2? I wonder if it was ever considered. Could have then have been repackaged with the original. D

I'm glad it wasn't called that. Not that I *love* GHV2 as a title, but - I'm not sure how to word it properly, but I think it was important to present her 92-01 catalog as its own thing, capable of standing on its own merits, without having to evoke the preceding decade.

Madonna had no interest in GHV2, she was in peak “no looking back” mode.
I believe it was a contractual obligation, she kind of sabotaged it by not including any new songs and leaving off some big hits in favour of lesser hits.

Warner must've been kicking themselves for releasing it in 2001 and leaving them nothing to fall back on when American Life underperformed or to accompany the Reinvention tour. And I suspect that Madonna was quite happy that it worked out like that and not have the optics of a Greatest Hits come out when she was on the backfoot.

Unfortunately, it appears all very male dominated when it comes to Greatest Hits albums having popularity in the UK, Whitney aside. Madonna never gets her due which is baffling when The Immaculate Collection alone exists!

I meant new ones, all those are catalogue releases. It's still Abba Gold and the Queen Greatest Hits on there. I don't remember the last time I saw a GH album being released other The Weeknd releasing one around the Superbowl. Although I wonder if it's the actual albums or people streaming the songs. I think Madonna has low streams in general compared to those acts (something I'm sure the biopic was meant to adress).

My story: hundreds of Madonna pics on the same booklet justifying the purchase of that album... only to have a proper Internet connection two months later.

GHV2 was unnecessary
As a collection to showcase the brilliance of her 90s and early 00s hits it should have been must-have. But it just wasn’t. I bought it about 10 or so years ago and only bothered ripping the CD a few years ago just for the hell of it but it’s just lacking something that The Immaculate Collection has even though each song is brilliant.
