Maggie Rogers - Surrender

I feel sad that this album didn't really get its dues. Want Want is my #2 of the year and I think Surrender is my AOTY too. A massive artistic upgrade for her and a brilliant, no-skips* body of work.

*except you know what but we don't know her

My album of the year, too. It did well enough for her to keep touring and recording - that’s the important thing.

The new sound and look may have been a bit of a departure for her casuals, possibly. But it was a creative success - I love this Sheryl Crow chilling at Warhol’s Factory vibe.

Yes, happy birthday to Heard It in a Past Life! It is still one of my favourite albums. Also every Friday (i.e. music release day) that falls on the 18th feels so significant to me now, with all the releases that Maggie has had on the 18th.

Radio 1 seem to be playing the Shatter single a lot. Always great to hear her unexpectedly.

I just saw her live and she was SO good. Her voice has gotten so big over the years, I was seriously impressed with her vocal stamina?? And she's such a fun performer.

My only gripe was no Overnight or Retrograde on the setlist which are two of my faves from her, but oh well. An unexpected highlight was her duet with Del Water Gap, the recorded version is cute but it gave me full goosebumps live.

I've found myself returning to this again. I'm not quite sure why, but I'm really glad I gave it another listen. I'm hooked. I'm obsessed with the production on here. There's something about the piano flourishes that come through under the guitars that just gets me every time it happens on the album.
