Marcus Collins - Seven Nation Army (Debut Single)

Isn't it just appalling that Marcus thinks he can get away with releasing a cover in the style of another cover? He must be mortified to be associated with something so downright disingenuous.

I reckon he could pull of that style of song, but not that type of persona. His voice would suit them well but not his personality, if that makes any sense at all.

I get what you're saying but isn't it (unique personality) what makes Janelle Monae different from the rest?

Oh yes! Which would mean her version of the song would be more unique.

His would be a good cover. But if he recorded songs in that style I reckon they'd sound rather good.

he could be a cool new male-Rihanna-mixed-with-Adam-Lambert-gay-but-extremely-attractive-popstar.

You think so? In my opinion, he's not 'edgy' enough to be male Rihanna. Same with male Janelle Monae, she's not just another old-school R&B diva.

I know exactly what you mean, but Rihanna was hardly 'edgy' when she started out... so I guess he could be transformed, maybe?

It's definitely true that his 'X Factor personality' wouldn't suit this, but then they're basically all personas anyway.

He doesnt sound anything different from the guy who first covered it! They may as well just super impose his face on that guy for the video!

I instantly recognised this while I was in a charity shop this morning, and was completely put off. Not just because it's so gobsmackingly similar to the cover Peter featured on the front page, but just because it was so... useless? unnecessary? It just seems like one of those gormless ideas a man in a suit comes up with that he thinks is 'edgy' and will cross over genre lines. It just smacks of shrewd marketing.

I agree with the poster above who called this lazy. This trumps Joe McElderry's soulless cover of 'Ambitions' by a wide mile.

Any word yet on whether this is in fact just the record labels idea of a joke??? Because I refuse to take that serious, its worse than 'Cannonball' and that is saying something

Cannonball is one of the worst singles I've heard in a good while. I'm sure people like the original but Little Mix are so dreary on that cover. I'm sure they'll be much better with suitable material though.

Incidentally, I wonder if Marcus actually knew he was given a cover of a cover version...I recall a few years ago on X-Factor, Austin Drage (I think) performed a Michael Jackson cover, but of course it was reinterpreted. Of course someone had performed the exact same version of that song on American Idol a week or two prior to his version. It's that sort of laziness that typifies the Syco approach to pop, and sadly that attitude seems to have rubbed off on Marcus or whoever chose the song for him to sing over.

Well in his pre-release interview he said something about being excited for people to see "his" spin on the song, which leads me to believe he thought he was getting a new arrangement of the song that had been created just to suit him. It's a sad man's folly to put faith in one's handlers as a Syco artist, but once again a naive young man has let some guy in a tie lead him astray for the sake of a few pounds.

They'll drop him by Christmas. I'm sure the album'll be half shit, but I'll still be sad because this happening over and over is beginning to be like an abusive relationship this record label has with young people.

His wikipedia page is hilarious. Mind, it gave me a clear idea of who he is (I had never heard of him before).

Oh dear, this is dreary as hell. I can't see this doing anything at all. All involved should hang their heads in shame...

Marcus is trending which would normally be a good thing but the comments are mostly of this nature.
"Congratulations Marcus Collins, the soul of music lays dead at your feet..."

He's just not very marketable. His audition was my favourite performance from him, so I don't mind this direction at all.
