Mariah Carey - Caution

The Christmas tour last year was so amazing.
I snagged a 2nd row ticket for Leeds like a week before the show once it got moved off VIP, then two nights before decided to go to the Nottingham show too and got a pair of tickets for £50.

I could understand her not coming back for a while - there's definitely a bit of fatigue what with her coming every year since 2016.

This album is really one of her absolute best, huh? Every time I revisit it, I'm scalped all over again. I knew it'd never be huge for her, but I can't help but wish that it got more attention than it did. There truly isn't a weak link among the 10 tracks. The production is fucking lush and her vocals are stunning throughout. The run of The Distance to One Mo' Gen remains one of my favorite 3-track stretches on any of her records. The whole thing felt like such a triumph at the time and still does today.

It’s so weird. The album is indeed great but the rollout and the old school nature of the record left my playing experience feel a bit brief. It’s over so quick and I suppose I just got used to Mariah record feeling widescreen.
Basically it’s great but I’m never happy. I just don’t go back to it enough.

I certainly wouldn't have minded an extra track or two if the quality was maintained, but I've also always been a sucker for a concise, cohesive record. Memoirs, I Am Mariah, E=MC are all solid but each have a few tracks that I don't love, whereas Caution is front-to-back perfection for me (even With You, which I didn't love as the lead, works much better in the context of the record). I think the reason I do go back to it so frequently is that it's such a quick, enjoyable listen - a perfect 40 minutes to enjoy with a glass of red wine and a joint.

He / Him / His
I’d end up placing this just outside of her top 3 overall for me, after Butterfly, Daydream and Memoirs... but to be hitting these highs this late in her career is astounding.

I think the liberation of accepting she wasn’t going to dominate the charts anymore and making the record she wanted to make, free of compromise, is what pours out of it and makes it so great and it’s put her in a great place, going forward.

I was thinking about her Genius interview the other day & it's really one of the best things any pop star has ever done.

Literally the perfect mix of the interviewer doing his homework & asking the right questions + the artist being an open book with her process. That was so great to watch, particularly because I feel like her artistry (at least for a lot of the 2000s) is often overlooked in favour of her larger-than-life persona.
