Marina - Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land

This song sounds like the Fairly OddParents theme if it were adjusted to approach entry-level social justice causes which... is an improvement on the last album because at least it has some life in it. I'm actually interested in her point of view and I don't think it's as asinine as something like The Man but I agree that it all feels kind of late (like Lana was doing the witches against Trump thing in 2017 lol). I do think it's a smart choice that it sounds more like Bubblegum Bitch than anything though.

Whoever it was on here that pointed out Marina excels when writing about herself and flounders when writing about “the world” really hit the nail on the head.

She was one of the artists I clung to when I had my personal musical renaissance at the end of my teens - coming back to music I genuinely loved rather than the phases one goes through to keep up appearances in high school.

So I’ve been in it for the long haul and she once meant a lot to me. I would still be so interested to hear what goes on inside Marina’s head but I find I can’t bring myself to care about her ‘takes’ on society no matter how much I try.

I really enjoyed "Man's World", it felt like a return to form after whatever she was trying to do with LOVE + FEAR. "Purge The Poison" really cements her fourth album as a random detour from what made Marina be an interesting artist in the first place. I love it, it has everything I've been missing about Marina since dropping The Diamonds.

I wonder if Love + Fear was almost solely for the cash given the double tour & lack of stage budget.
I'll be interested to see if she dives into the campaign & its fan reception in the press for the new album.

I feel like the stage budget was purely because for the first time she’d chosen to spend on dancers, so there was less production budget to put into staging. I actually thought the staging was quite creative but probably better in concept than the reality - the white stairs/moveable parts set with projections on is very Madame X tour. I’m not saying Marina inspired Madonna but Madame X is a great example of what could be done with a set like that.

She had no band this time though - would dancers be more expensive than a band + more elaborate staging? Not to mention she was playing bigger venues.

I didn't mind the staging either but it certainly looked budget in comparison to the Neon Nature Tour.

I was hoping the next single would be that “Venus Fly Trap” snippet from her Instagram, but this sounds really promising as well. Definitely giving Family Jewels meets Froot. I’m all for quirky, art-school dropout Marina returning to bury #LiveLaughLove Marina for this era.

Just listened to the song in full. I love the direction she's going in with the production this time around, Purge The Poison especially reminds me a little of Better Than That and I'm Not Hungry Anymore. It's nice to hear her playing with her voice again as well. One of my major criticisms of the last album was that it felt like she only recorded one or two takes of each song, for someone who was so eccentric with her vocal performance (sometimes to a fault) it was weird to hear her feel so.. muted. The visuals are fantastic as well.

Lyrics are a mess though, aside from the chorus and the final pre-chorus. Those verses.. she's so corny ddd.

I just cannot see myself returning to a song that includes the words "Harvey Weinstein". Inelegant references like that suck the air right out of a song with plenty of more compelling aspects.

Tried listening to the whole song and couldn't get past the first few lines. Those lyrics are embarrassing.

Hollywood witches protecting the planet... Ok. Sure. I think Marina needs to buy a cottage in the woods and isolate herself from her celebrity friends.

Hollywood infected your brain... and it's rotting.

The lyrics are so brash and ridiculous that they come round full circle into being enjoyable for me. I'd much rather have some nonsense about Hollywood witches purging the poison and dismantling capitalism than crap about how life is strange because we all cry the same tears at night.

It's actually a little startling how quickly she's u-turned from 'we're all part of the same human race, live laugh and love your neighbour' to 'fuck men, you're all idiots, fuck capitalism, purge the planet'. We love growth.
