Marina And The Diminishing Returns - Love + Fear

The concept of love and fear is so vague that I have no idea which older song will be played in which half. The obvious one for the LOVE part seems to be Froot for me, and in FEAR she might give us Savages and Fear and Loathing. Majority of her back catalogue could be played in the FEAR half.

I mean, Froot is really more about fear for me, since it's about the fear of being left to rot in your prime because someone won't reciprocate your love for them. But she has so few songs to neatly fit into that love category that I'm sure we'll see some dubious inclusions.

The whole thing for LOVE\FEAR setlist is quite funny because there are so many songs that are about Loving yet how scary\mad.

Hopefully she'll do Power & Control as the breaking point between the sets dd. Also praying she'll bring some deep-cuts for the setlist. Neon Nature was a really good show Structure+Setlist-wise, would be amazing for her to outdo it this time around.

I think my biggest issue with Love + Fear is its packaging as smart or psychological pop music. I know love and fear aren’t linear emotions, but they really aren’t explored beyond any other album out there.

The record doesn’t gain anything by being split in half and stretching itself across 16 tracks. As many people here have already noted, it would have benefitted from being trimmed and condensed into one statement without a schism.

But with all that being said, there are some bops on here. Emotional Machine, Karma, Enjoy Your Life, Baby... great, current-minded cuts.

Emotional Machine is... a lot, but I can't help screaming along to the silly EEEEEEEEEENN chorus.

I feel like no one is actually listening to her very simple explanation she made some songs then for a kii she thought let’s see if this love / fear binary holds any water , which of these are more based on love and which are fear. It’s kind of upto the listener to say if this was worthwhile or successful.

She didn’t set out to analyse fear and put it in pop form.

Then she should completely drop the pop psychology narrative and stop acting like any of this is deeper than it really is. That however has not been how this project has been presented to the world by Marina herself. The premise is a mess and I can see why that might add another layer of confusion regarding this whole project besides the material itself.

A poor score from Pitchfork: https://www.pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/marina-love-fear/amp/

Which one of y’all wrote this review though? It reads almost identical to a bunch of comments that have already been made here... one of us (or this reviewer has been lurking through Popjustice)?!

I absolutely agree with the criticism lodged at the overly general lyrics & lack of experimentation and risk-taking, but I do find it curious that this critic spent some time dismayed with the “musical mathematics” on the album, but then went and stated that “Baby” was the best song on the album... as if that isn’t also a very calculated song.

Yeah! It shouldn’t be “assorted okay songs”, it should be “assorted not great songs”! I demand a change!
Then maybe those of us who don't care to see an opinion as part of the title, along with those who have actually said that they don't agree with it should go on and make thread with the proper title, how about that?
