Marina And The Diminishing Returns - Love + Fear

So, was at her concert in Athens last night. Same venue as the last time, but this time it was full. Again, it was so surreal to listen to her speaking in perfect greek and seem so genuinely happy to be there. Her dad and brother were there (No More Suckers is their fave track as she said) with many of her relatives as well. People were singing along all the tracks, even the non single ones (the Love + Fear tracks got some special love) and it made the atmosphere so special.

But best moment hands down was when she did a greek song, YES completely in greek and it's one of my favorite oldies as well. She was very nervous but did it justice in her own way playing the piano. I think it was her first time singing in greek in public. She didn't so Shampain, Oh No! and Blue, but did the great Savages. My two friends that knew only Baby ( I know...) had a great time and loved almost everything, so I guess talent sometimes wins. Can't wait to see her again, she's a crowd pleaser and the cutest out there!

Major regret vibes! Glad it was full and people were giving her love. How was Allie X?

I saw you! You looked even more hot in real life, ddd.
Other highlights included her musician, and a tall guy in the section where her family was sitting.
Pretty sure he was married to the lady standing next to him, but if not, Marina, have him call me, thanks.
(I'll make another post about the concert, kiii.)

Well thanks, but... who are you?

So, the sound was fucked the closer you got to the stage, but thankfully the videos captured everything with more clarity than my ears did, I guess?

Marina was excellent and probably the only dancer that had perfect timing.
The dancing was okay, but also not showcased as a central element. For example on Believe In Love the choreography was between two dancers and they remained in relative darkness while there was only a spotlight on Marina who occasionally joined in with the dancing, but mainly stood back while the couple of dancers were supposed to be the main focus. The entirety of the show was a bit like that. And as we've discussed before the dancers didn't seem to care about being in sync at all while not dancing with one another. They did tons of work, they performed their asses off, but it didn't have that much of an impact - it didn't feel much like a coherent whole.
Musically, I appreciated some of the production details more in certain intros where certain elements were given more attention and room to breathe. I did zone out quite a bit during the several songs I didn't care about, especially after seeing said songs receiving arguably the warmest reception by the entire room (Savages, Orange Trees etc). I mainly felt that there is no hope for the future of humanity where she goes musically if the worst shit is so warmly received.
Also not really caring much about certain bits meant that others that I liked felt that much more exciting by comparison. I burst with excitement at the opening of Superstar, Believe In Love, End of the Earth, Robot etc.
As for the visuals, they were generally underused, with certain songs that lacked visually not having a stronger physical performance to counterbalance that.
In general it didn't feel as iconic and striking as the FROOT show, but Marina is such a gift herself and everybody seemed to put their all into their performances, you can't help but respect that. I kept thinking I was so lucky that I was there, still seeing her at her prime, one of the very few artists I follow to even come to Greece and certainly the most affordable, while also one that I care a lot about as a person. Seeing her happy and living her dreams feels so weirdly rewarding, I sincerely hope she's truly happy.

Also I think a couple moved away from me because I was shout-singing now and then, and thankfully a girl that screamed louder than me came closer to me in their place and we got our lives and I felt seen.

Allie X was also amazing and beyond adorable! Her bandmates were also incredibly likeable and were complementing her vibe and aesthetic beatifully. Her set was phenomenally tight, she interacted a lot and seemed genuine and open and grateful. She complemented us by saying this was the loudest the audience has been during her set throughout the tour so far. I also lived for a moment where she crossed her hands making an X and a single fucking person in the audience (we are all so fucking boring at concerts in Greece) responded by doing the X back to her and she saw it and her face lit up with joy and it was the most adorable thing ever. I'd definitely go see a show of hers.

Well, the show in Athens yesterday was just wonderful. Yes, the choreography was tacky at times - though one of the girls had some brilliant moves- , yes there were obvious sound issues (caught her signalling the audio guys at least 4-5 times), yes, many of the visuals did not realy fit the songs so well....but all these things don't really matter at the end of the day. Her stage presence is leaps and bounds better than what it used to be, she's still serving magnificent vocals, and it's cute and moving to see her have so much respect for her Greek side (she killed the Greek song as well). I can say this was overall her best concert for me so far.

For once, I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, felt like there was a healthy mix of people taking videos and...well...actually being there for the show, singing along and dancing. "Feeling super super super" "Suicidal" has to be the weirdest audience callback ever, but it was still a moment.

Also, I was glad she chose to close the show with "How to be a heartbreaker", with the audience screaming every single word, rather than end of the earth, which fell a bit flat for me (just like the earth itself)

Looking forward to her next album, as I'm confident she can further explore the themes she touched upon with Love + Fear in a more nuanced manner.

Yea the greek Show was great, it also was my first concert in Greece, and, like Allie X, I was shook how enthusiastic the crowd was. It was real fun and Marina felt it too, you could tell.
The greek song was very pretty sung and my highlight as well.
My GP friends I dragged with loved it too and both named To Be Human as a favourite (and Orange Trees as the "ew, the weird one"). Welp.
