Max(imum) Martin: The Productions Rate

bsmaxmtimemagazinewobsz1.jpg

Buckle up, kids.

Max Martin.
Illustrious.
Mysterious.
Swedish.

Writer of 18 #1 US hits (which, frankly, feels a bit low) and owner of 51 Top 10s. The man behind what feels like just about every pop girl we love, and quite a few of the boys too (hayyo). From Spears to Swift, Kelly to Katy, and Backstreet to Bieber, he's guided every pop trend from the mid-'90s onward and played a part in most megastars' success. And he's done it all out of the spotlight, content to collect his considerable coinage in secret.

Well fuck that, Max Martin! We are dragging you out into the limelight whether you like it or not! Just kidding, we don't really matter. But with this rate, we do get a chance to revisit one of the most mindboggling success stories in music history. Quite frankly, without Max Martin, what would we have to discuss? Why, even when I was working on this very rate, I discovered the "Legendary Lovers (feat Drake)" blurb on Max's website, a scoop that got picked up by a few places. Max is always giving us something to discuss.

Max's discography is frankly too massive for us to rate every song. So, this rate is of Max Martin productions (or co-productions), NOT co-writes.

There will be two phases to this rate.

PHASE ONE:

Never mind this, it's over.

PHASE TWO:

We have 108 songs on our hands that MUST be scored. Put that paper bag down and stop dry heaving, because it's not as overwhelming a prospect as it seems. (Now, the prospect of SCORING them is much more terrifying. Cry for me, but not yourself.) You've heard so many of these songs before that scoring them should be a snap, although of course you'll want to brush up on them all anyway, because they're a treat to listen to.

Send me your scores for all the songs (please rate them in alphabetical order, the same as I post them, because it will make scoring much easier) from 0 to 10 points. Half points are allowed, but please no decimals other than that. Get your scores to me by December 14th.

A reminder: while obviously you will be rating the songs as a whole, try to keep a special focus on the production.

Also I already know this going to be hard as hell to run, so please bear with me. Your positivity will be much appreciated. I'm most hoping that we all have a great time and get to discuss some amazing, amazing pop music. Is it too cliche to say that there really are no losers in this rate? And how unbelievable is it that some of these songs won't even break the top 50?

It's bound to be one of the more insane bloodbaths in PJ rate history. All those songs! Madness. Utter and complete madness. I can't wait.

Enjoy! Seriously, enjoy. Because this is a lot of great music.

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

I realize how annoying this sounds Laura, but do the 1989 bonus tracks not count?

(I just really want to give New Romantics a 10.)

Damn you to the bowels of hell for reminding me of my mistake.

I kid, of course - yes, they count. Totally forgot about them. I'll add them now but they'll be out of order. I hope for your sake that New Romantics makes the full rate so you can 10 it!

Struggled to find 15 from that list, to be honest.

Time Machine for Top 10, though.

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

Can we just throw in Your Body for the sake of it. It was hardly a single, right?

Thank you! I felt bad for ruining your perfectly numbered list but I couldn't let I COULD BUILD A CASTLE OUT OF ALL THE BRICKS THEY THREW AT MEEEE slip through the cracks.

Also I had no idea he was apart of I Wish You Would! Interesting. I thought it was a full Jack Antonoff production.

And I'm gonna need Jonathan, Lost In Japan, Mollie, Smooth Criminal and any other bumpkins to band together and make sure Quitter makes the cut.

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

This is going to be incredible, thanks for running this Laura!

I only listen to about 13 of those songs on a regular basis, but I'm sure it won't take long to add two more in.

I will be the only person to pass in Miranda's song.

Augh I'm just gonna end up picking all the Britney songs. I hope the overrating of 1989 dies down before the voting for this is over.

There there, don't cry too much about Miranda, she already has a song that's guaranteed entry into the full rate.

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

YES! Also co-written by Avril... such a dynamic bop.

Okay, I will be the only one giving that one a 10/10.

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

Should we rank our top fifteen from 1 (most favorite) to 15 (least favorite)?

Re: MAX(IMUM) MARTIN: The Productions Rate - pre-rate selection happening NOW!

Lucky we have the singles, cause that album tracks list is a bit of a chore. I'll just pick everything Taylor.
