Melanie C - (Self-titled)

So I have now finally finished all of her albums and I am laminating my stan card as we speak. My ranking at the moment looks like:

1. The Sea (Enemy, Stupid Game, Burn)
2. Melanie C (Into You, High Heels, Blame It On Me)
3. Northern Star (Why, Northern Star, Closer)
4. Beautiful Intentions (Last Night On Earth, Never Say Never, Take Your Pleasure)
5. Stages (I Know Him So Well, Another Hundred People, Ain’t Got No/I Got Life)
6. This Time (Carolyna, Forever Again, Fragile)
7. Reason (Wonderland, Living Without You, On The Horizon)
8. Version Of Me (Numb, Dear Life, Our History)

The Sea is basically flawless and almost bulletproof. None of her albums are bad per say, but the lower 2 just have more filler for me. Reason needs so much work on it to make it shine but once you tweak the track list it's solid. Version of Me feels like more of a stop gap between the last few eras of pop/rock and the all out dance excellence of self titled. This Time veers a bit too much into MOR at times but when she picks it up and adds some punch she really shines. Beautiful Intentions is such a strong collection of rock music and it's a style she fits into so well. Underrated masterpiece. I'm a sucker for stage music and the choices she made for Stages is really solid, some well known songs and some more obscure ones that don't tend to be covered on albums like this. Melanie C and Northern Star are kind of tied for me. Self titled is slightly ahead at the moment because it's fresher.

Nice to see Fragile getting a nod! One of my most played songs, and the Carolyna 7" with it as it's B-side is one of my most sought after items.
Now you got me wanting to go through her discography and post my favourites from each album/era. Has there ever been a Mel C PJ rate?

I don't agree with your ranking, but your highlights are all excellent. Stages is actually the only Mel album I don't love. The rest range from good (Version of Me) to brilliant (Northern Star).

Listened to her remix of Jessie Ware.
It's quite generic.
Any thoughts?

I think it's a cool remix! I like that it blends different genres, with an obvious nod to several key musical trends of the 1990s, just like in Mel's mixes.
Hope she'll get to do more for other artists AND collaborate with Jessie again in the future - I would be curious to hear how their voices work together. Match in heaven material?

I think thier voices would work well together. Mel's high tone would suit Jessie's smoother lower vocals.

Festival bookings for next year starting to come in, Melanie will be performing at Camp Bestival in Dorset (27th-30th July 2023) and can't remember if already posted, but also In It Together Festival in Port Talbot (26th-28th May 2023).

Edit: Also confirmed for Camp Bestival at Weston Park, Shropshire (17th-20th August 2023)

This confirms that Spice Girls won’t be playing stadiums next summer then!

Not necessarily, Mel went on to tour with Sink the Pink around 3 days after SW19.
Also, given that Mel's solo tour started in February, they won't need much rehearsal time at all. It will just be tweaks here and there, she would still be able to commit tonnes of time to SW23

I do agree from a solo perspective she wouldn't need any substantial rehearsal time. If the girls were touring, it's possible that Melanie could do solo gigs between Spice Girls commitments and rehearsals. She did do LA/NYC shows for Return of the Spice Girls but she and her band were already there and on days off from the tour, nipping to Wales to do a festival set is pretty hardcore but then so was jet setting with Sink the Pink three days after Wembley. I think it's unlikely but not impossible.

They started rehearsals for Spiceworld 2019 on 15th April and the tour ran until 15th June which was a very heavy two-month block, it's reasonable to expect another UK stadium tour would take a similar amount of effort/commitment. Mel did also say at one of her later literary festivals that the Spice Girls wouldn't be performing at Glastonbury next year (followed by an audience member shouting "Victoria's a sellout"...) which could have been a red herring but it is looking more and more unlikely, particularly when Geri has her movie out in August and will be expected to do press/promo for that and then following that she's got a UK/US book release.

It doesn’t bother me if they don’t tour because I’ve always been more of a Melanie C. fan than a Spice Girls fan. I just think without new material it would be a bit dull to do another tour with the same setlist.
I did see the reunion tour in the US and enjoyed it, but not that excited to see another one.

A tour with the girls anytime soon feels very unlikely - maybe one off-event is still in cards, who knows. I guess the drive isn't here, despite what they are telling the press. The constant teasing and floating are getting tiresome to be honest.

Nice to see Mel already has several dates booked for festivals next summer. During the book tour, she said that new music would be her priority in 2023, but that she wasn't sure there would be an album release next year. I hope that once she is done with her ballet project, she can focus on this. Craving for new material!
