im so pleased melanie has announced she's started work on her 4th album!
after her "beautiful intentions" album flopped in the uk i really thought we'd seen the last of her for a LONG time. But then of course melanie recorded a new song written by guy chambers called "first day of my life" and suddenly shes become massive all around europe, hitting no.1 all over the place, which has in turn made her album sell bucketloads!
if it wasnt for this massive success in europe i dont think melanie could have made a new album, as she self financed "beautiful intentions" and admitted it was a massive financial gamble. it looked like it hadnt paid off when the album sold poorly in the uk, but who could have predicted what was around the corner...

anyway, the new album (which is due early 2007) is being recorded with "some familiar faces", and will have some further collaborations recorded later this year. im hoping melanie will have learnt some lessons from her last album, like the fact that an albums songs dont ALL have to be of the same style. i hope she makes this new album a bit more like "northern star" (with its varying sounds and genres of music).

Let me just say, I think that "northern star" is one of the greatest albums of all time. Do we know who these "familiar faces" are?

as you said, I hope she can do more styles that only one.

Nothern Star is a masterpiece and I hope she can do something like that.... no so rocky nor so pop.

I hope she works again with Guy Chambers because he has done the best tracks from Melanie C (First Day Of My Life and the under-rated MELT).

I'm really pleased about this news - I think its great how she carries on regardless of how poorly her last two albums have sold. Its obvioulsy a sound she is comfortable with but I wish she could see that she is never going to be the MOR female Robbie Williams and I think working with Guy Chambers is a big mistake. She may have done well with that single over Europe but its still very bland compared to Northern Star.

And yes I think 'Melt' was a good song too but it was a good album track rather than good idea for a single.

Now she's got her bitter "I don't need Virgin!" angry album out of the way lets hope the new one has some happy, optimistic songs rather than the never ending bleakness of "Beautiful Intentions". I wish she could afford Rick Nowells, Rick Rubin and William Orbit again.

First Day Of My Life was #1 in Portugal and Germany. "Beautiful Intentions" hasn't sold bucketloads at all, it was #1 in Portugal but has still only sold about 50,000 in total there. I would say 350,000 copies WORLDWIDE max.

I know what you mean. I like Melanie C but I don't like the way she feels the need to slag everyone off. I find it all a bit un-necesscary to be honest. I also don't like the way she is so dismissive about the group that made her what she is today. I don't like artists that forget the reason they are famous. What Melanie C needs to remember is there are a lot of artists that don't like her music or her voice but they don't shoot their mouths off all the time. She also needs to remember that she wouldn't be able to do what she is doing without the success of the Spice Girls as without them she'd probably be doing kareoke in pubs.

That said, I hope there is another "I Turn To You" on her new album.

I hope you mean the album version and not that trance remix her record company spewed out as a single.

well you'd be wrong there. "first day of my life" sold over a million copies worldwide (going top 10 for weeks, in every country it was released), and i dont know the exact figures for the album but id say its sold close to 350,000 in portugal alone...

It's still a mystery why "First Day Of My Life" wasn't released in the UK. If they'd chucked it out when in January when the charts are quiet I'm sure it would have been a hit.

I think the reason not to release it on the UK is because maybe Melanie C is waiting the 4th album to make a release for this track.

it wasn't *#1* everywhere but she has done bloody well to make it a top 10 hit all over Euroland, Netherlands, Sweden, French version about to be released.

I'm not denying the telenovela success story of First Day of My Life, it has sold respectably all across Europe and was actually #1 in Spain and Switzerland too. But the album didn't sell bucketloads as a result of the single, it just did alright, possibly making a profit for her, but also possibly not.

And FYI, the French version of Day of My Life will only be released to radio.

more interesting news for melanie fans...
in a new australian interview melanie says she's thinking about possibly re-releasing her "beautiful intentions" album in the UK, saying:

"Beautiful Intentions has been such a slow build everywhere, releasing in different times in different territories on different labels. It feels like the never-ending album. It's outsold my second album, and I think that's quite an achievement considering that was on a major label worldwide. I'm actually contemplating re-releasing the album in the UK. It'd be interesting to see how "First Day Of My Life" goes here."


Even though this album has been around for ages i would welcome a uk re-release, as long as it had a bit of new material on it to keep us fans going til the new album. interesting to know that "beautiful intentions" has outsold "reason", which had a worldwide major label release! "reason" was a top 5 album in the uk.

Also apparantly mel has said she wants to release her first single from the next album late this year, possibly in europe first. i hope she can get some well deserved success in the uk again soon, i think melanie c is such an under-rated talent in her own country.

The best news iv heard this year - I love Mel C! I really wanna see Geri make a comeback too and i still think 'Love never loved me' should have been released as a single!

I think all the Spice Girls had life left in their solo careers. It wasn't so much the material as the public's attitude towards them. They were just seen as the epiotme of un cool so no one wanted to know. Mrs Beckham should have followed up the top 3 hit "Let Your Head Go" and Halliwell should have not given up on "Passion". People liked "Ride It" only six months or so before "Desire" tanked so there was some hope there with the right song and the right video.
