I can't believe how adamant people were the reunion was never going to happen.

I didn't give up hope:D

I thought the same! There was always hope... Viva Forever and all that.

With good old Sport, would love her to have the baby, become a bit more feminine, maybe embrace a spiritual side and have a Ray Of Light a la Madonna era with the next record.

Extremely wishful thinking I know but she just needs to make her sound more commercial and not I Want A Hit Record Candy style shit. Just good pop songs, that if she wants to rock up on tour when performing then great. Saw her a couple of months ago and she has a bloody damn good voice and really is passionate, it just gets a bit boring halfway through the piano-accoustic-mid-tempo smush some times.

Your Mistake from the 4th album so could have saved her career.

Re: Melanie C making new album!

This Time sold around 300 000 which was OK considering how she stopped promo to join the reunion tour. Understand or Forever Again would have been great singles. Love your Ray Of Light idea. She should call William Orbit ASAP :)

Re: Melanie C making new album!

Well certainly not in the UK, it's barely past 10,000 here...

It did go gold in a couple of European countries but 300k seems way inflated. I'd guess at half that.

Re: Melanie C making new album!

She is popular in Europe though. I'm not sure if 300 000 is accurate but it didn't do too badly. Beautiful Intentions is my fave Melanie album though I love Northern Star too. Pity she doesn't get enough recognition.

I really love her tone as it is really genuine and sometimes very sultry even.

I think she should do more soulful pop (Joss stone style/Adele style???) that would suit her.

I loved her early work and I also like Next Best Superstar, couldn't care less about her other stuff

This Time is a great album. Favourite tracks are This time, May Your Heart, Immune & This time. i even went to the official album party in Glasgow! I agree with the earlier comment about how she didnt go down the dance and r&b route after ITTY and NBTSA!

I really hope that she can pull it back together though, I just don't know this far down the line what she can do.

I imagine she's been writing prolifically during her pregnancy. After the success of FDOML its easy to undertstand why she went in the direction she did with This Time, but I agree that she needs a dance/pop hit to re-establish herself.

Anyone doubting whether she still has what it takes should check out the way she won over a very sceptical Indie crowd during her Isle of Wight festival performance:

The thing about Melanie C is that although there is this notion that she is anti-pop, and yes some of her post Northern Star material is patchy, she is actually the only Spice Girl that combined talent, with on stage energy and charisma, with a likeable personality to boot. In other words, she is the Spice Girl's only bonafide 'pop star'.

Watch this TV promo performance of 'Stop' recorded during their 'comeback'. Melanie C is the only one giving it any beans. She's working over time to make up for the utter apathy of the other four. Geri (oh she's so fun and camp!) and Victoria in particular have all the stage presence of microphone stands with wigs on.

And if tirelessley soldiering on recording, releasing and touring albums which are undeniably still 'pop' albums long after the sales have dropped off doesn't show a passion for and determination to succeed in pop music, then I don't know what does.

And for my money, she's aged the best and now looks the least revolting out of the lot of them.

Long live the Chisholm!

What's unfortunate about her is that she's really desperate grasping at "rock credibility." If she can put that shit out of her mind and establish herself as an indie pop singer like the spate of musicians we've seen in the last two years (I'm thinking Dragonette, The Ting Tings, Roisin, Yelle, Sam Sparro) in terms of color, energy, style, she may have some ability to turn herself around.

I'd love to see her just team up with electro-pop producers. I always imagined what her vocals would sound like when underpinned with something Groove Armada or Calvin Harris.

Odd that even if "I Want Candy" was a mess, the campy dancing and flair of it was kind of the first bit of genuine life we had seen since the 'Northern Star' era had closed up. Right now, she's essentially a female John Mayer and John Mayer's "hunky good looks" sells records, not his music. Mel C does not have "hunky good looks." Sadly.

Here, here!
If she was so craving "rock credibility" as SomethingKindaUgh said surely she would have befriended Pete Doherty and turned up at the NME awards & Foo Fighters gigs every chance she got.
