Melanie C

The completist in me will probably cave in and just buy this anyway, but i agree, it is so fucking lazy the packaging, i’d rather they just held off putting this out altogether as it is pretty much an incomplete product without the original artwork, i was someone who genuinely really liked the simplistic art direction they went for with Reason so its extremely underwhelming that this is what we are getting.

I really hate this issue we regularly seem to run into with Spice Girls related re-issues.

Rankin was the original photographer and he won't have come cheap. Perhaps there was some sort of licensing deal on the photos which has expired and it's not worth paying him again? I would have preferred the original, but I do like the new design, it's a 2LP and a full collection of b-sides/additional tracks, and at least now it is clear what the album title is instead of a picture and "MELANIE C".
Here I thought it was like Spice photoshoot issue that they couldn't contact the photographer but nope they are just being cheap per usual. They wouldn't pay up for the extra spice world photoshoot too (which, they could have done so much merchandise with that photoshoot alone!). I really hate how Universal is handling these releases.

Yeah Rankin probably had a ten / twenty year rights clause and it expired. Back then labels didn't think pop releases would be something people bought decades earlier. Hence why pop album negatives or original files have been lost.

Could be worse: Grace Jones's Jean Paul Goude albums have been just text on Streaming for years now. And she too has an album coming out like that.

I really despite the Reason photoshoot, the angle of the album cover feels so odd. I am interested to see how I feel about the music when it's not presented in that artwork!

It’s still crazy that we got tracks like Positively Somewhere, Do I and Soul Boy (I believe a cover!!) as album tracks when she had songs like Wonderland (was this relegated to a DVD single?), Love To You, Living Without You and I Love You Without Trying. Knocked Out can stay b-sided.

I get Positively Somewhere. It is a bit of a vide. And was considered to be a UK single at some point.
But I would add Lose Myself In You as an album track that should have been a b side.

A bit of a shame as she had a SOLID and a decent alternative follow up, yet was so misguided.

If you love music, and vinyl in particular, you want the iconography to be worth your time as well as money. There's no excuse for this level of ugly, boring artwork. You aren't only buying vinyl for the music. It's something to look at and show off.

This.

One of the main "reasons" is to get the original artworks in the larger vinyl form. Sadly this time we are short changed. Yet the extras in the one does make it some what worth it.

At least Universal put in some effort with the release. The track listing is chef's kiss. They probably would be more inclined to renew the artwork license if Melanie had a bigger fanbase or if the album was a fan favorite.

The tracklist is great and I'm hoping it brings them all to digital once the RSD embargo expires, as well as get them the impetus to reinstate the "On the Horizon" single remix back onto digital, but...

I find it really strange that the original artwork is somehow not available. This was a major label album release, being repressed by a major label (not the original one, granted). Has Mel acknowledged the release yet? Maybe she's been made aware and might be able to have a word if the jackets aren't printed yet.

She has acknowledged the release but so far it's been quite low key from her.

And yes, let's hope this tracklisting makes it to Digital.

A Spice Circle user reached out to Sean Ellis and in his own words: The record company didn't want to pay for the usage of the images so they decided not to use them.

I don't really want to have to pay around £40 for a double LP on Record Store Day for a sleeve knocked up on MS Word. It's insane that they don't lock down the album art photography for future use, even if just basic generic album cover and a t-shirt.

Trying to work out what the difference is between the album and single versions but can't hear it?
