Umm where are all the posters with an ax to grind against Ms Kelis calling out Miley for working with Pharrell!? Almost like the hate towards Kelis is about something else…

I feel like this has layers.

1) People were being rude to Kelis in defense of Beyoncé, which was a very pointed defense of their preferred Black woman - Beyoncé (usually the criteria for yt men is chart success, visibility, and being able to watch her on tour). Pharrell as the root of Kelis’s issue and her unhappiness with the industry was excavated a bit after that.

2) This song is ancient but recently reimagined. Pharrell’s involvement is attached yes, but isn’t as active, and even despite that, Miley benefits from the Grammy goodwill and being a white woman.

It’s not as straight-cut, but I feel the context of it all is largely different.

You'd think Pharrell would've learned his lesson with losing the "Blurred Lines" lawsuit. The production is a complete retread of that, but Miley's vocal track makes it listenable.

Song is okay. She sounds great, but it's a bit repetitive/flat. I wish it built up to something more. But she looks like she's having a blast in the video, and she totally sells it. The simple setup wouldn't work for many artists, but she has the charisma to keep it engaging.

It feels like it’s plodding in the middle but the switch up around the middle eight is good. The “let me let me” is so catchy and the adlibs are nice.

A few more production flourishes would be welcome… something something Pharrell etc etc.
