Mirror Mirror: The M2M Experience Rate | When did you go bankrupt? Gradually & then suddenly.

On October 26, 1999 (21 Years Ago To The Day) The film roll started. The Pokémon appeared. & The Greatest Song In The History Of Pop Music Was Released:

Ok, not really the greatest, but it was damn good! (I just needed a dramatic rate entrance.)


Welcome to: THE M2M EXPERIENCE RATE




Many things about my M2M fandom have always happened accidentally, right down to how I came across them from day one in. So it came as no surprise to me that this rate idea came about pretty randomly... sprouting from the seeds of the Mandy Moore Discography Rate last year. Several times in the rate some M2M talk sprung up & made me very excited. They have a pretty small presence on Popjustice, so seeing the love for them was nice. When the prospect of doing a rate for them was mentioned, there was some interest… so I jotted it down in my ‘PJ Rate Ideas’ folder in my project manager app. (Yes, I am a nerd.)


Much like Mandy, M2M came into my life at about the same time. Late 1999 was a certainly a special time for pop. Unlike Mandy though who I struggled to connect with right away, I was in instant love with M2M out of the gate. All the pieces were there for me & on paper it felt like the sky was the limit for this dynamic duo from Norway.


Alas, despite their triumphant entry into world of pop with their lead single, M2M fever would never quite catch on like I thought it might. Not to say they flat out flopped either. In fact, their rather omnipresent pop culture presence despite rather chart/sales mediocrity made them all the more an interesting curiosity at the time.


In their very brief splash into world of pop as duo they left behind two fantastic albums of, what I consider to be, practically perfect pop.... and then......


they were gone.


Well, as a duo, at least.


Over the next couple years in the mid-00s both started their solo careers.

First there was Marion, who went in a decidedly rockier direction (that worked sometimes for me & sometimes didn’t as much) & then Marit (whose quirky singer/songwriter folk pop was certainly more up my alley). Over the decade though, I fell more & more in love with Marit as a solo artist, closely following her career , and finding myself revisiting M2M’s brief catalog more & more. (I mean, Marit was aways my fave, let me just get out that there!) That said, I also found myself evermore intrigued by the directions Marion’s carrier was taking. Both had various degrees of success & made made some flat-out amazing records in their own right.


The thing was, I knew if I ever tackled a M2M rate, I’d need to get creative with a few things. One being, that it would likely need to be a some sort of versus or comparative rate featuring Marion & Marit's respective solo careers & their M2M. This made sense for a variety of reasons. One being that M2M has a very small discog and while I think it’s very good, I didn’t know how exciting it would be for a rate (or how many people would even be interested.)

That last point lead me to the other issue with a rate concept for them. Except for people of a certain age, M2M is fairly lost to history, despite having a certain small fandom that loves them. I mean, I couldn’t even find a thread for them in Comeback Corner before last year when I made one! That said, while Marion & Marit had varying levels of success in more recent times, outside of some song contest love, neither really generate a lot of buzz on PJ. All of this adds to both my fascination & frustration as a lifelong fan.


The other part of tackling such a rate, is that I would really wanted it to be kinda educational/retrospective & serve as an introduction/overview of either all three distinct to their respective musical outputs... taking into account some people may only know about one part (or even none!)

All of this is how we have arrived at The M2M EXPERIENCE... which is kinda three rate concepts in one:

This rate features 99 songs, 33 for each aspect of M2M. So how did I divvy up the songs?



First up: M2M

For all practical purposes all of M2M’s output is in the rate. As I mentioned, they had a very short career. Both of their albums are included, as well as b-sides, and & one-offs. I included a few remixes as individual songs to rate. I did this for a few reasons. One is then a couple of their remixes really do paint a song in a new color, so I thought it’d be fun to see how a couple stacked up against the original (especially from members who may no be familiar with them.

I also really wanted the the rate to cover as many corners of their career as possible. There really was a method to my madness in the song list! I'm also into symmetry, so I really wanted an even number of tracks for all three categories...ddd. As such, once I settled on 99 songs, I worked to get the M2M section from the high 20s to 33. I know a few of the oddities I picked might be low hanging fruit for early elims, but that’s ok, It was important they be here for historical reasons.


Then we have Marit & Marion

Both have pretty lengthy discogs of about 100 songs each. So, I needed a good way to whittle that down to a manageable level that covered them well still. To spotlight Marit & Marion’s solo careers fairly, I decided on 33 songs a piece as well. Their song selections cover one album a piece, their solo singles, & some selected features and other songs I like that I feel give a well-rounded overview of their respective careers.


I’d love to eventually go see full discog rates for both of them, but for now this rate will serve as a good look at what M2M have been about for the last 25 years... both their brief career as a duo & their 15+ years as solo artists.



Which brings us to the songs.


So, their solo careers in particular have had a confusing mish-mash of odd release strategies. From dropped projects, to multiple albums being combined into one release, & more. This has led to very frustrating easy availability of their work, if you’re a fan in certain countries. Only about half the songs in the rate are available globally on Spotify. All are on YouTube in some capacity, but again about half severe geo-restrictions.


As such, I have made a Spotify playlist & included the YouTube links per normal song rates, but I have also had to get creative & use my web app skills... since I knew these geo-restrictions were going to be frustrating for everyone involved (or perhaps discourage some potential voters.)


Luckily , since I have all the songs in some capacity I have created a special private website for those who wish to participate where all 99 songs are accessible for listening purposes for the rate. Let’s call it ‘a fair use educational proxy’ ddd . If you are interested in having easy access to all the songs in the rate, let me know. I will then send you the url & password to access the site.

A couple of notes of quick notes about this.

Even though the rate is 99 songs, I think it's an easy overall listen. Their solo material is still pretty tuneful & melodic (I mean, Marion got a bit rock after M2M for awhile which is represented here, but nothing too crazy, ha!) Both of the solo albums I picked to represent them match up pretty well on 'vibe' too (melodic singer-songwriter stuff with some folk/orchestral sensibilities.)

I hope you'll give it a go.

 

Given that I've entered both Marion and Marit in PJ00s, I feel like I should give this a shot. I'm not really familiar with either of their discographies aside from a handful of songs, so it should be a good opportunity to discover more. I'm definitely more interested in the solo parts of the rate, but hopefully there are some gems in the M2M section as well.

That's a good question. Probably not, I guess. I don't think this rate is officially a 'vs' rate or how all that works. I am going to keep individual leader boards, though for stats purposes... so I'd be ok with all three in the Winners Rate!

Yes! You were one of the biggest champions of this being my next rate, so that's one reason it's happening now. As a special gift for your encouragement, I made sure to include 'In Spite Of Me' in Marion's extras... since you voiced preference to it.

 

Yeah, I like them and I know about 40 of the 99 songs - this will take a fair bit of listening time which I may not have (then again, work could sack me and then I'll have all the listening time and be in the perfect mood for Marion's angstier moments)
