Yeah, the Australian ‘Ace Radio Edit’ was a chopped up version of the ‘Down To Earth Mix’.

I think they should have released this edit of the ‘Dream Mix’ in the UK which kinda felt a bit Robert Miles-y (it was only available on the European release, picked up from Lucky Records in Paris). Please excuse the graphics - I’d just discovered Movie Maker…

Regarding the other members, let’s say I think the microphones were turned down for a reason. Case in point: listen carefully and this backing track retains either Lisa or Mandy on the chorus and…I…

That's a great mix too. I like the song, but I can see why it wasn't a hit, although it should've done better than it did.

Sadness does you no favours
A little sunshine is overdue

Fast Food Rockers - 'Say Cheese (Smile Please)'

Average score: 6.900 (queens of precision!)

High scorers:
@idratherjack (10), @DJHazey (10), @j267 (9), @Ana Raquel (9), @iheartpoptarts (9)
Low scorers: @AcerBenII (1), @Lost In Japan. (2.5)

Notable achievements: Martin gets a lead vocal (well, a couple of adlibs!). Reached #10 on the UK Main Charts, and #4 on the Indie Chart (imagine guitar bros reacting to this!). Possibly the only song in the rate to have symmetry between its position and its average score.

Our babies! A premature revisit to the primary-coloured bubblegum world of Fast Food Rockers, this time with a bit of an attempt at 'sauciness' (see the T4 performance below) and a bigger budget for an on-location video in Malaga. Without the added 'kiddiness' of the 'say cheese' and 'watch the birdie adlibs', you could definitely see this being recorded by some of the other acts in this rate such as Scooch or possibly very early Steps...Talking of very early Steps, the B-side to this track was 'Stompin' which was recorded in demo form by Steps as one of the follow ups to 5,6,7,8, until Pete Waterman came along and they went down a different path. You can definitely see the track's genesis, complete with rap section presumably intended for Lee. On the CD Single, the original was known as the 'Parmesan' Pop Mix'. A 'Mag-C Mozarella Club Mix' was also produced which is a 10 from me, I need to hear it in a grotty gay bar now!

Released in October 2003 as their second single, the song achieved a very respectable #10, paving the way to their attempt on the Christmas chart that we saw earlier...An absolutely glorious gem exists from this time, with their interview on kids' show Newsround around this time being available on a fully functioning website (also featuring S Club 8 and an article about Gareth Gates becoming a 'flop star' - the shade!). The band address the rumours about their singing, apparently Top of the Pops performance happened with live vocals. Sadly I couldn't find it!

On the other hand, since I just mentioned food or songs that sound like food, it’s interesting that I’ve never had the word ‘cheese’ being the prominent part of this song ever become an issue. Stone cold bop in every way possible and the verses are so emotive they give me butterflies!

@iheartpoptarts 9
A legit amazing chorus.

@Doodvid 8.4
Was thrilled/shocked to hear this played during a trip to Ibiza the summer after it was released. [Does this place still exist? Was it the club remix?]

@berserkboi 6.5
Can’t see myself returning to this one very much!

@Ezz's friend who spontaneously selected the 'Fast Food Song' on our Zoom-bop night, upon hearing this song when I played it:
Not sure why people hate them? This second single is brilliant

I sadly never knew this the two times I was in Paris! I was far too invested in the Anime stores and sending boxes of French Anime DVDs back to Australia! I did however come across a DVD boxset of Dalida’s that was an instant purchase (under the guise of being a gift for my brother)ddd

Say Cheese (Smile Please) is a bop of the highest order, I remember being pleased they weren't just a one hit wonder. On the other hand I have completely forgotten how Unforgettable goes so we got these eliminations the wrong way round.

I really do miss this type of fun pop music and feel sorry for the kids of today that they don't have anything like this. I'll go outside and shout get off my lawn now!

Ah, workplace mistakes... We've all been there, right? Usually involving hangovers and dropping things to an audience of customers in my case! One of the most infamous music-related errors involved this next act...

THE DURATION WILL BE THREE MINUTES EXACTLY [/smut]

Scooch - 'Flying the Flag (For You)'

Average score: 6.932

High scorers: 5 x 10s from:
@Ezz, @Sprockrooster, @idratherjack, @Ana Raquel, @unnameable, @iheartpoptarts (9)
Low scorers: @j267 (1), @AcerBenII (2), @Markus1981 (4)

Notable achievements:
Achieved their joint-highest chart position of #5. The highest charting UK Eurovision entry in the top 40 since Katrina and the Waves' winner in 1997. [Will we ever see such success again? itsnotrealistic.gif]

Another of our novelty songs makes an undeserved early exit! After a 6 year hiatus, Scooch reformed in with the aim of representing the UK in the 2007 Eurovision Contest. A song had been written that was supposedly comparable to 'More Than I Needed to Know', but this got vetoed by the BBC in favour of the camp-fest we know (and some of us love!) today. The band proceeded to the BBC's 2007 selection show, 'Making Your Mind Up', hosted by Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton, and the infamous moment happened that will forever earn them places on Eurovision documentary...

Apologies for the potato-like quality of this clip, but it showcases the shambles brilliantly, with Terry Wogan announcing Cyndi as the winner, and Fearne Cotton having to cover his mistake. Poor Cyndi, although her song was an absolute snooze fest! However, she did release this gorgeous uplifting trance track with Armin Van Buuren in 2013.

Back to Scooch: could they avoid the fate of Jemini of 2003 in the Eurovision grand final? I actually think their live performance was pretty good, especially Natalie's vocals, although I think the curse of the caterwauling backing singers may have struck (see also: Josh Dubovnie, 2010!):

Unfortunately, this didn't translate into success, with Scooch only gaining 19 points from two countries (12 from Malta, and 7 from Ireland), being joint 22nd / 24th with France. However, chart justice was served, with the UK public ignoring the derision of the press and getting the band their second top 5 chart position As @Doodvid's band spotlight showcased, this wasn't the end for the band, with intermittent performances at Pride events and some tantalising hope for belated 20 year celebrations. Maybe they could do anniversary KeepCups to complement the lunchboxes!

CAN YOU SAY ABSOLUTELY ICONIC!

@Ana Raquel 10
I hate that this is hated among ESC fans as it's one of my favorite entries of 2007 (which fyi it's in my top 3 ESC editions). It's tacky done right imo.

@unnameable 10
The Eurovision winner that never was. “Would you like something to suck on for landing Sir?” Who remembers the Serbian dirge that won Eurovision that year?

@Ezz 10
This brings back memories of being disgracefully drunk in a corner of my university bar where the statistical society were calculating algorithms of voting which just made everything funnier (and me ever more screechy, oops!)

@iheartpoptarts 9
I’m going to become a stan and listen to all their stuff.

@Doodvid 7.5
Oh Scooch! Was so excited when they were announced as contestants for the UK national finals and had dreams of ‘More Than I Needed To Know Pt. 2’. Ah. The Moonlight version of this was fabulous and a highlight was seeing Caroline & Russ and a bus-full of passengers “singing” ‘Flying The Flag’ on an episode of the camp old reality show ‘Coach Trip’.

@berserkboi 7
Passed me by so I can’t imagine I loved!

@DJHazey 6.3
It's cool that they name off cities, the geographer in me loves that. Unfortunately I am finding it hard to enjoy fully because it sounds like a song made specifically for the event without a chance at extended appeal.

@Hudweiser 5
Yeah it was funny but do I ever *want* to listen to it? No.

Oh my goodness this is bringing tears to my eyes!

This is almost trance-like!

‘Flying The Flag’ had some banging remixes, including a superb one from Sleazesisters which started with a patriotic blast of ‘Rule Britannia’. Sadly not online I might add it to Youtube though…

And they did the old Kylie ‘Your Disco Needs You’ trick of releasing millions of foreign-language-spoken-word versions to really get that hot hot Scooch fan coin.

Flying The Flag (For You) is one of only 3 UK Eurovision entries that I bought and loved over the last 20 years along with Molly and the dearly departed Electro Velvet. I was thrilled that Scooch reformed especially for Eurovision and fondly remember the calamity of Sir Terry Wogan announcing the wrong winner, like most of us it was the kind of mess that I live for.

My local grim regional homosexual nitespot used to hammer this version

and I got my life every time! I love that despite all the hate they still nabbed a Top 5 hit #popjustice
