‘It’s the Way You Make Me Feel’ is one of those perfect single packages - the song slaps on all fronts, it shows off all of Steps nicely, the music video is one of their best ever, the choreo is iconic and of course the Sleazesisters Remix is a highlight in their remixography. It had to be my #1 pick! Side eyeing those 9 and 10s…

Liberty X - ‘Thinking It Over’

Average score:
8.5
High scorers: @iheartpoptarts @Conan @berserkboi @Remorque (4 x 10) @Doodvid (9.8) @Markus1981 (9.5) @DJHazey (9.3) @saviodxl (9.2)
Low scorers: @Sprockrooster @Ana Raquel (2 x 6) @unnameable (7) @Wezzo (7.5)

Notable achievements:
Reached #5 in the UK in 2001, and #29 in Ireland and #81 in Australia.
Was the debut single for the group, although under a slightly different band name (“L to the I to the B to the E to the R to the TY”)
Shares its title with Liberty X’s first album released in 2002

20 years.
How is this song T to the W to the E to N to the TY years old already?!
Always destined to be compared to the success of their ‘Popstars’ rivals, the extremely hot group comprised of Kelli, Jessica, Michelle, Tony and Kevin deliberately eschewed the pure pop stylings of Hear’Say and went straight for ‘credible’ with their first single ‘Thinking It Over’. With a slick garage vibe and going undercover with white label nameless vinyl sent to DJs, Liberty (as they were originally known) immediately seemed a cooler, more authentic alternative to the traditional mixed pop groups at that time (except maybe for Boom! RIP). I have memories of being on a fantastic holiday in Spain in September 2001 where this song was played endlessly alongside Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ and Victoria’s ‘Not Such An Innocent Girl’ and it truly felt like a proper moment in edgy dance-pop heaven - and whether it’s just me showing my absolute no-music knowledge of the charts right now, but ‘Thinking It Over’, despite its age, kinda feels timeless. If someone could slip it into some modern summer playlists, that’d be fab thanks.

To be honest I am expecting my Liberty X average to be a 10, so this amazing bop is just us getting started!

@iheartpoptarts 10
I forgot how good this was!

@Doodvid 9.8
Deserves to be more widely remembered & celebrated than it is. Classic.

@DJHazey 9.3
Reminds me of the current PJSC entry (which I obviously won’t reveal) and exactly how it swept me away with all of its intricacies.

@saviodxl 9.2
I love the R&B meets garage-y sound. Also, the boys are looking like snacks here, aren't they?

@Ezz 9
Oozes chemistry.

@Hudweiser 8.5
Effortlessly cool, such a kii that they managed to eclipse Hear'say.

Live vocals on TOTP (classy!)

I am now at that stage of a rate where I don't want to jinx anything and mention my 11 then watch it inevitably be the next out!

All I will say is I'm surprised Hear'Say are still here.

Thinkin' It Over - 9. This would be a good place for this to leave if some other songs weren't left in.
Pure UK Garage greatness.

Turn Back Time - 10. I'd have this in the Top 10 of what's left, but as a ballad I'm grateful it got this far. Lyrically interesting and thoughtful, we've all wished we could turn back time. Lene's vocals and the backing track are just beautiful.

Strangely, or should that be spookily, our (un?)lucky 13 hasn't been mentioned in the recent guesses!

As much as I love Things That Go Bump In The Night, and I really do, I have a feeling the organisers of this rate will have made it so it lines up with a Hallowe'en elimination, so it's days are numbered (which will be better that it's actual September release date.....real opportunity missed back then).
This would have been immense, although I'm kind of glad this track's position meant it's held on for another few weeks.

Beware of the full moon
Stick to the path
Out come the creatures
A spine-chilling laugh!

[I was today years old when I learned that it's 'beware of the full moon' rather than 'beware of the fall'! This rate is educational!]

allSTARS* - 'Things That Go Bump In the Night'

Average score:
8.545
High scorers: @Ezz, @Conan, @j267, @idratherjack (4 x10), @Doodvid, @saviodxl (2 x9.3), @Sprockrooster, @Hybridcookie, @berserkboi, @DJHazey @Markus1981 (5 x9)
Low scorers: @unnameable (6.5), @MilesAngel (7), @Remorque (7.3)

Notable achievements:
Their signature track, becoming the essential Hallowe'en track for any house party or provincial nitespot (especially since it was made available on Spotify). Achieved #12 on the UK charts, a 8 place improvement on their debut single.

Find me a song in this rate that is as deliciously camp as that opening spoken verse! Even on the starSTREET clip below, in an actual kids' TV show, it feels like the band and their producers kept a distinct 'tongue in cheek' feel, which adds to the charm. Where the team didn't do quite as well, as picked up by our lovely commentary team below and the ever-amazing Can't Stop the Pop, was the execution of the single's campaign. An amazing Hallowe'en theme? Release the song in late September (possibly to do with the broadcast of starSTREET). Even the inclusion on the Scooby-Doo soundtrack was slightly squandered, as the film was typical school summer holiday fare and gone by release date. Although the song got a respectable #12 position in the UK charts, it exited the charts in just 4 weeks, before Hallowe'en.

The song lurked in the memories of a select bunch of pop connoisseurs until 2019, when it was finally released on Spotify, hopefully to gain a second life on many a seasonal soundtrack. It certainly deserves a wider audience. Becky Hunter takes her usual (sometimes shared with Thaila) role of lead vocalist, but there are also opportunities for the other members to shine, with the judicious use of the echoing refrains throughout the song. An amazing bassline, undeniably catchy hooks and a chorus that stays just the right side of chaotic all contribute to 4 minutes of pop perfection. More recently, the entire allSTARS* album was added to Spotify, including the bonus remixes such as the Xenomania one included below, adding even more frenetic energy to the track.

One of the best things to come onto Spotify. Is it a prelude to a 20 year reunion?

@saviodxl 9.3
Love this Kim Wilde meets Da Buzz vibes.

@Doodvid 9.3
In an era of songs peaking on their week of release and subsequently dropping like a stone from the UK charts, why on earth was this released a whole month before Halloween?

@berserkboi 9
Backstreet’s Back, Alright

@DJHazey 9
In contrast to the last song [allSTARS* Best Friends], "Something Spooky" type bops can be catnip for me, like has been achieved right here. I guess I'm Hallowen bop bish

@Hudweiser 7.5
Was this for a Scooby Doo movie? It's cute and fun.

@iheartpoptarts 7
I can’t quite work out whether the Scooby Doo-ness of it all is deliberate.

@unnameable 6.5
Using the “Most Haunted” low-light effects in the video (interestingly, the producer of Most Haunted was the man who made the “Pure Shores” video, so he made a career out of that effect)

Warnings: motion sickness effects (do other people get this from over-animated Powerpoint presentations?!?); seriously questionable live vocals in the verses with the rest of it mimed? I think!

As it appeared in the starSTREET series. Depsite the dodgy green screen still manages to look more sophisticated than Supernatural - Supernatural!

Thank goodness. I wish I'd suggested this as the next elimination because it's my lowest score left at 7.5 (maybe it deserved an 8). It's fine but has no business being in the Top 20. Spookily enough it has been eliminated at the time of a FULL MOON!

On reflection, my 9.3 score feels rather stingy*. I listened through on repeat multiple times just now and ‘Bump’ really is that bop!

* I checked and me scoring it a 10 would have had no impact on the placing at all - although oddly accidentally typing in 109.3 with my fat thumb made for quite the upset!
