I once read that 'Sundown' was a cross between ABBA's Rock Me and Tight Fit, and it makes sense to me. Maybe the chorus production could be bigger, but it's the melody that makes it so brilliant; it's dreamlike, so the production works for me. And that bridge is glorious. Controversially I prefer it to most S Club 7 songs. I'd have liked to have seen it in the Top 5 of the songs that are left, but it did so great to get this far.

An iconic pairing leaves us now…

…an inspired combination…

…resulting in a 100% banger in absolutely every respect…

But is it Same Difference vs Alcazar or Liberty X vs Richard X or Kym Marsh vs the rest of Hear’say?

Well…

“Hello my name is Michelle
Hello my name is Kevin
Hello my name is Tony
Hello my name is Kelli
Hello my name is Jessica *giggles*”

Richard X vs. Liberty X - ‘Being Nobody’

Average score:
8.923
High scorers: @Sprockrooster @berserkboi @Conan (3 x 11) @Untouchable Ace @MilesAngel @idratherjack @j267 @Lost In Japan. @Doodvid @Hybridcookie @Remorque (8 x 10)
Low scorers: @Wezzo (5.5) @Hudweiser @AcerBenII @iheartpoptarts (6)

Notable achievements:
Reached #3 in the UK singles chart in 2003 and was the 52nd highest selling single that year
Lead single for the sophomore album from Liberty X
Highest performing cover version in this competition
Final song in the rate to score below a 9 point average (we’ve come a long way kids!)

So if you could ship me out 3 fully-functioning Kevins and a shop-soiled Tony in time for the 25th that’d be great thanks. NO GIFT WRAP REQUIRED *insert devil emoji*

Ah 2003 - the height of the ingenious mash-up and what better way for Liberty X to launch their newest venture than a collaboration with pop’s seemingly least-likely saviour and all-time great record-stitcher-togetherer, the producer Richard X? Hot off the heels of his work with Sugababes, ‘Being Nobody’ saw him weave together another irresistibly sexy slab of squelchy sounds combining elements of Chaka Khan with The Human League. The slick vocals and visuals offered by Liberty X provided the *chef’s kiss* icing upon the already mouth-watering cake.
Jeez - hyperbole much?!

Unfortunately the above image was rejected as the official single cover (which along with the accompanying video gleefully plays up the notion of the group being a manufactured pre-packaged commodity) and we ended up with the rather generic text-on-block-colour sleeve instead. Happily Richard X appeared “live” with Liberty X in TV performances of the track, albeit in a sensible suit and playing keyboards morosely whilst his stage-mates writhed energetically in the foreground (Ace of Base’s Linn ha’ impact). ‘Being Nobody’ also made the tracklist of Richard X’s brilliant debut album ‘Presents His X-Factor Volume 1’ (more on that later) and whilst indicative of an exciting new musical direction for Kelli et al, sadly it wasn’t reflected sonically in their follow up to debut ‘Thinking It Over’, the second album ‘Being Somebody’ which stalled on release and signalled a slow decline in the band’s commercial appeal.

Voters say:

@Sprockrooster 11
I remember hearing this for the first time right before our family went for a trip to Los Angeles/Las Vegas and I had to put it on my MP3-player and it became one of those songs that became a signature song for that holiday (though lyrically it is a nonsensical link between a holiday with your family). But despite all of that it always takes me right back to the sequoia's, Joshua Tree Park and the Cheesecake Factory. It was an absolutely amazing holiday and the sheer emotion I feel when listening to this song channels exactly that holiday bliss. Also can I just shout out the amazing music video as well. If this was a videography rate it would have been a winner by a landslide in that contest.

@berserkboi 11
Considering how much I adore everything about this, it makes sense my 11 should go here!

@Doodvid 10
This sounded so futuristic 20 years ago (or thereabouts) and still has that timeless other-worldly sci-fi quality I love. Like an episode of ‘Black Mirror’ in music-form.

@Ezz 9
What a way to do a cover version!

@DJHazey 8.8
Chaka Khan’s was one of my favorite discoveries during the Women of the 80’s rate. While this holds true to that classic, I do find myself longing for Chaka’s original instead, but I’ll bop anyway. Also, it kind of gets away from them a little bit, near the end.

@saviodxl 7.5
A decent effort, but damn, another cover of Ain't Nobody tho... This song became a bit saturated.

@iheartpoptarts 6
This takes more melody out of the song than it needs to.

@Hudweiser 6
Ain't Nobody has been covered way too many times for me to be able to extract much enjoyment from ever hearing it again.

I just love the imagery for this track:

The instrumental with the fantastic spoken word introductions:

Old Popjustice Forum says:

Erm…they really weren’t kind to ‘the X’.

Ouch.

*sits and waits for my delivery of Liberty X male specimens, sobbing softly*

Fellow ‘Doctor Who’ fan @idratherjack might be able to help me with this…

I’m sure Russell T Davies once mentioned that the video for ‘Being Nobody’ (with the band being mass produced) was part of the inspiration for the Autons returning in the new series debut in 2005. Might have got that wrong but there’s a faint glimmer of a recollection there.

Let me dig out The Writer's Tale to check...

@Doodvid Either way, Richard X Rate when?

Oh wow YES!

Please everybody go out and listen to this masterpiece, sadly not on streaming yet.

I once attended a really intimate DJ gig by Richard X at a night run by Bright Light Bright Light (aka Rod Thomas) in East London - sweat dripping off the wall kinda place - and cringed when my friend asked him to “play some classics” during his set…she couldn’t answer him when he asked what she meant (she’d meant ‘Rhythm of the Night’ by Corona I think)

Iconic album though now I want to hear Rhythm of the Night (Richard X Remix).

So here’s our amazing Top Five (in alphabetical order)

We’re aiming for the final reveal at some point on Christmas Eve (UK time) but before we announce the song leaving us at #5, we’ll be announcing the winner of the Legends Rank side theme over the next day or so.
Watch as our plans all go to shit!

ABBA - ‘The Winner Takes It All’ vs Steps - ‘Scared Of The Dark’

Pop! and Same Difference should have been replaced with Sundown and Being Nobody and then it would have been perfect.

The other three are legendaric pop tracks and the other two, I have no wish to listen to, ever again.
