The battle of the classics draws to a close!

Will the winner be a heartfelt song symbolising the end of an era and a relationship, by a band which defined the mixed group genre?

Or the triumphant, trailblazing, no Big Reunion TV show needed as we did one by ourselves thanks return after 16 years with no new music (well apart from that disaster of a Christmas album, and as iconic as the 'or, or me' moment is, the version of Dancing Queen with a backing track from a backstreet pub's karaoke machine...)

From what I recall, this track was #1 until maybe about half way through the voting period, when the winner overtook and then eclipsed it...

The lead track of the amazing 'Tears on the Dancefloor' album. A return to the UK singles top 40 after over 15 years, with their final (to date, come through a killer track for their 25th anniversary!) entry on the charts at #37

Although I'm a little sad my favourites didn't get the #1 spot, #2 seems like an entirely appropriate position for Steps, given their phenomenal success built on successive top 5 singles, but only hitting the #1 position twice. This was such a moment in pop history that still makes me a bit emotional nearly 5 years later! Those countdown Instagram posts with snippets of the album, billboard adverts, appearances on mainstream TV as opposed to the bloody QVC channel. A perfectly executed comeback, started off with those dramatic strings which just encapsulated the Steps sound. Over to @Lost In Japan. who curated the superlative Steps Discography rate in 2018 (which was my first foray into this forum!):

Which means…

Which means that with this, we have our winner! It ended up with less 11s than either ‘It’s the Way You Make Me Feel’ or ‘One for Sorrow’, but there was no beating it with those 10s: at several points during the rate, this song had a score of 10+. And with good reason: ‘Scared in the Dark’ was more than any of us ever hoped a Steps comeback song would be. From the minute I heard those strings in the first Twitter teaser I was excited, but even at that point I had no idea what was to come. The chorus is melodic heaven in the classic Steps way, and they stuck to the tried and true girls formula for the verses, making this feel like a classic Steps song put through a 2017 filter rather than Steps taking an attempt at the modern market. I remember the day it premiered, and specifically I remember sitting at my computer for over an hour rewinding the Ken Bruce Show over and over again just to hear this song. And every single time I was blown away, mostly by that key-change and Claire’s incredible “I’ll never be scared of the dark”, with vocals sounding like they could have come out of the ‘Chain Reaction’ recording sessions. While it wouldn’t be my personal winner (see #2), this is fully justified as the victor of this rate and, coming just over a year after the song and accompanying album were released, is another success for what has been a shockingly well-executed reunion.

HollyDunnSomething (10) echoes many of our thoughts, saying “WHAT. A. COMEBACK. Seriously, other acts should take notes on how to come back after so long and elevate your sound with one lead single”. Seanie (10) has some well-deserved praise for the management, saying “Fascination got it so right with this as their comeback single, it went right back to the Step One/Steptacular formula of Faye opening then Claire gets her verse and leads the chorus then Lisa and the boys get their bits. Some may think that’s a slight, but the formula worked in 1998 then and it works again now!” One Stop Candy Shop (10) says “this is how you do a comeback single. A LOT of artists should take notice”. GhettoPrincess (10) says “what a comeback single. It perfectly captures the Step sound yet makes it fresh. Claire reminds me of why I love her vocals and Lisa’s verse is iconic & full of personality. Best bit has to be that chorus though. Wouldn’t surprise me if this sneaks into the top position of the rate and it’d be worthy of it too”. Mina (10) simply calls it “sublime”, while Fantasy (9) says it was “a perfect comeback song for them. Such a return to form and Steps doing what they do best. I especially love the pitch change at the end, as it makes the whole thing end in such an epic finale”.

JamieHT (10) says “where to start? After Light Up The World I thought we’d probably never have new music from them again; just nostalgia tours every little while. How wrong I was as I would say this might actually be their best single. This was very nearly my eleven. It’s perfect Steps but current sounding. All the girls get a line and a killer chorus. I was not prepared for how good it would be. The actual moves for ‘Scared of the dark’ are iconic too”. And while I’m not sure what Light Up the World is, it had VivaForever (10) worried too, as they said “I was ... concerned ... when this came out, because of course I wanted to believe in Steps, and actually I quite liked Dancing Queen, but the Light Up the World album was such an unqualified disaster. Luckily, this was nothing like it. Nor, in fact, is it vintage Steps. It's a more sophisticated Steps, dropping the camp for genuine theatricality while keeping the four-on-the-floor beats, and I LOVE IT”. KingBruno (10) says that “the fact that this single is intentionally off-trend makes it so splendid”, and tylerc904 (10) calls it “what a return. It was unexpectedly amazing for me, because I did feel they would go the easy way out and do something less upbeat”.

londonrain (10) says it was “one of my favourite songs of 2017. The song that made me check out their amazing comeback album”, while DJHazey (10) says that “when I first listened to this album, I actually didn't really consider it a favorite compared to many others but I've since come around. I think the video helped me get into the spirit. The love how entrancing the verses are and the way the production keeps bumping up the chorus and driving it along masterfully”. AlmostFamous (10) says it was “so so so close to being my eleven, but I need a bit more time with it to know fully. It’s insane how much I played this the last year, people who don’t even like Steps like this bloody song, they never had that the first time round”.

iheartpoptarts (8) says it was an “iconic comeback, but I’d listen to it more if it didn’t take so long to get to the fun part!” Empty Shoebox (10) may have thought it 10-worthy, but still thinks it “needs more key changes, and a better dance. This was the big comeback after so many years, so the choreo just feels like so much of a letdown”. OspreyQueen (8.5) says “honestly, I don’t think this song is all that. I always feel like there’s 20% missing from it, and I’m not keen on how it ends so abruptly. Still worthy of a good score though”. And Angeleyes (10) says “sadly, this has worn off on me slightly. It doesn't have quite the impact it did the first 100 listens or so when it just sounded *so good.* But still, it's incredible that they were able to come out with something like this after being broken up for so long. It totally stands up with their best early singles”.

Hudweiser (10) calls it “the comeback everybody wanted (and needed). Everything about this just works. In 2002 this would've landed in the Top 3 no problem. As with all the world's problems - I blame Ed Sheeran”. Chips111 (10) says “WOW! WOW! WOW! Just the orchestral introduction used as samples during their Twitter countdown was enough to excite any fan about the new era! Scared of the Dark is genius. Take Old Steps, mix it up a bit with 2017 sounds (not latin obviously!) and you’ve got a new single worthy of an 11! No more “it could be me” quibbles over vocals (as far as we know!) even Lee gets a look in with H’s in your arms. It’s a bigger stomper of a track than Stomp. An ideal show opener and a great return to glory for the group we now want to see more releases from”. mrdonut (10) says it was “amazing though to return to a cynical public with an off-trend slice of pop melodrama and absolutely blow everyone away. This deserves to be Top 5 in this rate, a superb accomplishment that actually manages to tower above many of Steps’ most loved hits”.

TrueBeliever (10) thinks "this is one of the best songs of the last decade from any artist (along with Bananarama’s “Love Don’t Live Here”). It’s beyond brilliant. From Faye’s beguiling intro, to the tempo change one minute in, to the jaunty guitar work, to Claire’s key change … this song has everything I love in music. It’s dramatic, fraught with energy and melancholic microtension. I can still listen to this song 20 times in a row, and not grow tired of it, even a year later. Top 2 contender for my 11; I hope it wins without it”. (Well, congrats!) JakeMagnus (10) “never ever would have imagined that they had another single (let along an album) like this in them. It's current (though certain members of this forum will not agree) and vocally they are on top form. Love the timeless production. Hope they will sing this for years to come and that the casual fans will accept it as another Steps classic (which I guess has already happened, judging from the reactions at the concerts). Quick aside: Back when they teased the new song with just a picture that said 'Scared of the Dark' I was honestly afraid that they were gonna release a studio version of the Ghostbusters cover. Glad we avoided that one”.

JMRGBY88 (10) simply says “what a return”, while AllTheUsernames (10) says “what. A. Comeback. Christ...this song is everything I wanted and more from Steps in 2017. Just perfect. It’s a darker sound from where they used to be, and I adore the Phantom of the Opera-like synths in the chorus”. MadameX (10) nails it, saying “that's how you do a pop comeback”. And TheBakersSon (10) calls it a “perfect comeback song, tuning in to watch things you wouldn't normally watch on the telebox just to watch Steps perform their new single was such a happy little trip down memory lane”.

SaturSteps (11) says it was “the perfect comeback song that I never thought I'd get after Light Up The World. The key change still gives me chills nearly a year later”. Hybridcookie (11) says “what a comeback song. My most played song on Itunes. It made a killer tour opener and Claire's "I'll never be scared of the dark" middle 8 line is magical”. (The best bit of the song, by far!!) confess85 (11) calls this “Steps at their best. The return we were all waiting for. A brilliant piece of pop music and I loved how dramatic and huge it sounded on tour”. And CasperFan (11) speaks for all of us, saying “this is how to do a comeback! From the opening dramatic strings, you just know this is going to be amazing. They all sound on top form, Claire being so prominent in the chorus, as all Steps songs should be. Lisa snatching the best line! Nice blocals and that key change is life-affirming. Perfect pop”.

@berserkboi
This melody sounds so much like another song!

@Doodvid
I love it although I love others of theirs much more. A perfect comeback though - they really did smash it, didn’t they?

@Ezz
One of the musical memories to take to my grave when I heard this for the first time. I was so dreading a Blue 'Roulette'-style new album and this was just perfection. The opening of the original mix or the 7th Heaven Remix in bars just gives me goosebumps! (Bars? What are these mysterious things?)

Not sorry at all to be sneaking Here and Now into this (my 11 of the 2018 rate and the biggest surprise of their latest tour!)

he/him
Love that ‘Here and Now’ mix. I haven’t seen Steps live since the ‘Ultimate’ tour and should really remedy that soon.

Though I do like their ‘Dancing Queen’ cover - don’t hate me @Ezz.

“Tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?”

I’m willing to bet there’s no lyric from any of the 109 competing entries across this rate that cuts to the quick quite as deeply as this one.
Go on, find one. I’ll wait.

Such simple yet emotionally-loaded couplets masterfully pepper ‘The Winner Takes It All’, the majestic song ranked by you as the best of our Legends songs. Perhaps the ultimate break-up anthem (Taylor Swift wishes), the track showcases ABBA’s timeless melancholic craftsmanship alongside angelic harmonies, hauntingly beautiful vocals, and that instrumentation - which gave life to many a sound-a-like in the years since passed. The definition of a classic.

The winning post from @Hudweiser in 2013:

"The judges will decide, the likes of my abide, and someone way down here loses someone dear."

What can be said? From the first few seconds of the intro to that stunning fade out, this song is clearly a masterpiece in songwriting. Everything falls perfectly into place lyrically and musically.

Once again, Queen of Sadness Agnetha puts in a staggeringly heartfelt vocal which made this one of their bigger global hits, returning them to the Top 10 in the US and Australia as well as number one in most of the usual territories.

My score: 10 Categorically my favourite song of all time, my most played, and that I'm constantly in awe of and never tire of hearing. I never skip it when it comes on shuffle.

Thanks to The Visitor for doing most the hard work - I hope he's fine wherever he may be! Thanks to all of you for voting and thanks to ABBA for, you know, the music!

And with Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) out of the competiton, your winner is crowned. It is without a doubt one of the best ever divorce songs ever written, featuring a stellar performance by one of the purest vocalists out there...

It's The Winner Takes It All.

Though I don't doubt that there was any question in your heads whether this would/should win or not, I gave it my 11 along with 5 other people. It pulls at my heartstrings more than I can ever write down here and takes me back to a simpler time in my life when I was a small child. I wasn't actually born when Winner was released, but it was still on heavy rotation in the mid 80s, so it's definitely familiar. Take that with the fact that my mother only owned Super Trouper on LP and played it a lot around the house when I was little and it was always meant to be my 11 here. There was no doubt in my mind. I come from a broken home, with a mother that made many stupid decisions regarding men in here life (I'm not judging, just stating) and I've always known this song was special to her. Given the crumbling nature of our relationship, we will always have this song. Always.

And so I thank every single one of you who rated the songs in this rate and made this the crowning song.

Thank you.

The Winner Takes It All was written in 1980 by Benny and Björn and history has it that Björn sat down one evening drunk at his piano and started playing those keys, which would eventually be the opening to this song. He has always denied that the song was about his divorce to Agnetha and so did she. They always gave interviewers the textbook answers that there were no winners or losers in their case, especially as their children were involved...
Yet, no one can fucking deny that the song has sprung out of the heartbreak both of these people had to have experienced when living and working together while divorcing, trying to maintain a popular image for the general public. The fact that Benny and Frida's marriage was starting to fall apart when this song was released makes it even more heartwrenching...

It was eventually released in July 1980 as the lead single for the band's seventh album Super Trouper, becoming a massive hit and one of the best-sellers of 1980. It's reached the top spot in Belgium (crying etc.), the Netherlands, South Africa and Ireland, got to the top 3 in Finland, Sweden, Austria, Norway and Germany and became a top 10 in Germany, France, Zimbabwe, Italy and Spain (among others)...
It was a number one single in the United Kingdom too, became one of their last singles to reach the Australian top 10 and was also their last top 10 hit in Canada and the United States, where it spent the longest number of weeks in the chart than any of their other singles. It did, however, reach the top spot on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, which was their second after Fernando did the same way back in 1975.

I'm going to start off with Hudweiser who states "Just THE best song in the history of recorded music. There's no other way of looking at it. Even when Steps 'borrowed' the chords for One for Sorrow it still only resulted in a sub-par imitation. Everything went so right with this recording: It's a ballad! It's a pop song! Fuck, it's almost got a disco beat going on!? Agnetha's vocal is pristine, capturing the heartbreak of her loss, the almost-cruelty of Bjorn making her sing it from his POV (as lyricist), the backing vocals, THAT PIANO OUTRO! I legit want this played at my funeral.". Aint gonna be a dry eye in Schul, sis.

Mina calls it "A masterpiece from start to finish, from the lyrics, the production, and the vocal delivery. It's hard to argue that this song wasn't an instance of life creating art; out of all of the epic break-up songs ABBA released in later years following the two couples' divorces, this one is definitely the strongest.". Though I wouldn't fault When All Is Said and Done, because it's fucking fantastic, but this is just on another level...
SecretsOfFatima gives it the same superlative, naming it "A true masterpiece, though I don’t believe Björn’s original narrative about it not concerning their divorce. Sure Jan.", with Filippa too stating it's "One of their masterpieces.".

"A few years ago this would have been" idratherjack's "11 without question. Imagine making your ex-wife sing "tell me does she kiss you like I used to kiss you, does it feel the same when she calls your name". Brutal. Uncle Pete Waterman rightly declared this to be the best pop song ever written. And he should know as he invented pop music. I love that Steps took this as the template for all their best songs.".

To WhatKindOfKylie? it's "
Sublime. It doesn't matter how many times you can hear this one, it still packs one almighty punch when listening to it. Easily the finest piece of songwriting than Benny and Bjorn came up with, and Agentha'a lead vocal, will always be one of the finest in the history of song.". It's easily her best vocal performance ever and that's coming from someone who isn't really an Agnetha fan in the biblical sense...
He wasn't alone in thinking so, because a lot of other people commented on her vocals too.
GhettoPrincess acts confused, asking "One of the best pop ballads ever? No seriously…. it’s that good. That vocal, the lyrics…. my heart breaks. Agnetha just has that voice I adore." and what Mikey1701 admires "most about this song is that Agnetha was willing to take a song written by Bjorn, who she had divorced a year earlier, about the end of a marriage and belt it out. Even if Bjorn maintains that he never wrote this with his divorce in mind, Agnetha made damn sure that it WAS about it. You can feel the heartbreak laced with rage- once again proving how formidable a vocalist she is, with that final minute in particular leaving my lacefront in tatters.".

It's obvious to tylerc904 that the song's "Clearly a classic, and if it does ultimately win this like I suspect, I will not be upset in the slightest. It’s moving, beautifully sung, and chugs along like a smooth ride up until that final AAAAAAALLLLLLLLL. I used to spin around my garage on rollerblades to this song trying to hold that note. Memorieeeez.".

Though Epic Chocolate thinks it's "A little bit over the top." and gives this a 9.50 rating, TrueBeliever calls it "A stunning song, rife with amazing melody and harmony. Refined and understated, it packs a passionate punch to my heartstrings. If anything, it’s a bit too long." which is probably what made him give out the same score...

"Just the ultimate heartbreak anthem about building fences and DIY." explains kalonite as he "struggled to choose my 11, but in the end, I honestly really didn't have a choice.". A fucking CHOICE was constantino's score of 8 as he remembers "when Britain voted this to be their favourite ABBA song? Yeah, no. This is wonderful but it’s also a bit dreary and tacky, which is not what ABBA was about. There are some really pretty sonic details here which makes me care for it overall.".

chris4862 actually "contemplated giving this a slightly lower rating, because shockingly it has never been a personal favourite, and wouldn't likely be in my top 25 ABBA songs but I can't deny that it is a masterpiece.", with P'nutbutter asking "Best pop ballad of all time?", then following that up with "(Meryl Streep legit made me cry singing this too.)"

dancingwithmyself is of the opinion that "It's competent and forever tainted by Mamma Mia The Musical.". There, there...

WhipperSnapper calls it "A stone cold classic," but has some thoughts to share about the video, first asking "so why is it that I can only remember how badly Agnetha needed a deep conditioning treatment in the video? Honestly, couldn’t they afford a real hair stylist by this point?".

bichard calls it "An ABBA classic that entirely deserves that mantle. Although in terms of the AgnethaBallad genre, it comes third for me behind One Of Us and SOS. Still amazing, though.", with VivaForever being quite adamant knowing this would be the winner, asking "This is going to run away with it, isn't it? It's overrated but it is in fact amazing. The final vocal run is everything.", while ufint states he "wouldn't be mad if this is the winner and takes it all.".

JonBcn gave this his 11 too and I'll just let his words speak for themselves...
"This is not my favourite Abba song; that would be something off the next album or maybe the Day Before You Came. But I had to give this 11 for so many reasons. Even as I child I marvelled at how these people had come up with an entire song written entirely in metaphor (albeit one that hits you rounds the head) whilst working in a second language. The juxtaposition of melodrama with a subtle disco beat marked a template for basically all my favourite pop songs since then. Agnetha’s star turn; her performance is perfect and the song is deceptively difficult to sing (apols, anyone who’s ever seen me at karaoke). Oh, and for years I couldn’t say ‘self confidence’ properly because of how she changed the inflection to make it rhyme with ‘tense’. I still do it, but on purpose."

I'm going to end my final write-up with poor ol' Sprockrooster for obvious reasons of course.
"WHAT A SONG. This is in a league of it's own. If this doesnot win, then it might be the biggest shock in PJ rates history. Reading this on wikipedia "In a 1999 poll for Channel 5, "The Winner Takes It All" was voted Britain's favourite ABBA song. This feat was replicated in a 2010 poll for ITV." I am going to edit this when the rate is over and add that during a PJ rate it scored a hattrick. MAKE IT HAPPEN, people!"

Well. Y'all did.

My evil plan to give the two Steps songs the lowest rankings worked out. Bwahaha!

Seriously though, I placed 'Scared Of The Dark' at #9 over 'The Way You Make Me Feel' because I prefer it,
but I haven't had time to get to like it as much as the other non-Steps songs in the Legends rate, which include song of my favourite songs ever. And I was always going to give an ABBA song my top ranking (unless maybe it was a Voyage track!)

Anyway I'm happy 'The Winner' took the Legends rate; however there are a few ABBA song which I prefer.

Here is my commentary for the song from when I gave it top marks in the 'Women Of The 80's' rate.
"I can take The Winner Takes It All for granted because it is so iconic, but once it starts I can't help but be swept away. The melody, lyrics, Agnetha's main vocals, Frida's backing vocals and the production all come together to create an emotionally devastating masterpiece."

Nelly was sat atop the UK Top Ten, female r’n’b tinged-pop from JoJo, Natasha Bedingfield, and The 411 with their classic ‘Dumb’ jostled for chart domination alongside Maroon 5 and Embrace, whilst home-grown garage from the likes of 3 of a Kind was about to develop into the British dubstep scene.

So what does Pete Waterman decide to give the public? Pop!’s second single ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ - something that wouldn’t have sounded out of place 5 years earlier during Steps’ ‘Steptacular’ era. Not that this is a bad thing of course - the song is arguably the most accomplished of the quartet’s released material and an absolute anthem thanks to dramatic key changes, Jade’s stunning vocal performance, and the sad-dancefloor-baiting backing track…but it just had no chance of thriving at all in the 2004 music scene. Pop!’s sound had all but vanished from the charts, Saturday morning kids TV shows were a distant memory, and even Top of the Pops was on its last legs - where could ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ be heard? Contemporary Popjustice was lukewarm towards the act (still carrying resentment toward PWL’s recent flop project One True Voice ) and would instead champion more zeitgeisty-cool-kid concepts such as Girls Aloud, Killers, and Client over 4 pretty young people in matching outfits dancing to disposable bubblegum, no matter the quality of the material.

The band surprisingly earned a brief reprieve after ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ limped in and out of existence within the space of a week, but soon the band members had gone their separate ways with Hannah and Glenn (who both never appeared vocally on the Pop! material) popping up in Freemasons music videos and as backing dancers for…WELL…

Fortunately voters here know their stuff and it warms this cold old heart to see a song that only scraped into the Top 30 singles chart outlast huge million-selling iconic entries by group such as Aqua, hustling its way into the Top 5 of the rate where it definitely belongs. Although it’s time to say goodbye, this just makes it all the sweeter!

I think it’s generally agreed this is their best song but who knows.

@Hudweiser 10
The outro is my favourite part, it's annoying the song fades when it does.

@Doodvid 10
The Shanghai Surprise Mix was always my go-to thanks to that slightly different vocal take by Jade on “And I don’t know why” towards the end. Glorious in all its forms.

@DJHazey 9.5
Classic pure-pop-lover’s fodder. Songs like this remind you that you’re in the right place.

@berserkboi 9.5
ABBA-esque!

@Ezz 9
The video in a slot machine concept is so much fun. Another excellent use of the key change!

I’m sure there was a one-off performance on ‘Top of the Pops Saturday’ but it’s nowhere to be found. So here’s some amazing remixes and the decent b-side.

From 5:52 onwards…just wonderful.

@iheartpoptarts - one for you, gorge.
