Modern Songs For X Factor

Discussion in 'Pop & Justice' started by Baby Clyde, Jul 4, 2013.

  1. A really good friend of mine has got through to the Bootcamp round on this year's X Factor.

I've been advising them on great songs from years gone by to sing but wanted to add in some modern examples.

Being a 'PJ Oldie' I'm not that up on th current pop market so wondered if anyone could suggest some great recent songs that could be performed.

I don't mean records that you happen to like, or that song by your favourite artist that went Top 10 last week. The production is irrelevant. As is the video or dance routine.

I looking songs for singers that can be SANG!!!

Trying to avoid the obvious Adele/Emelie/Paloma etc. Have there been any great songs in the last year or 2 that I've missed.

Genre isn't too important, they just need to be something that a singer can get their teeth stuck into.
  2. I think Kelly Clarkson could be a good shout. Beyoncé's 'Halo' is perhaps quite an obvious choice, but it has a sister in Kelly's 'Already Gone', which features lovely melodies, emotive lyrics, and isn't gender specific. It's a 2009 song, so not bang up to date, but still pretty recent.

'Mr. Know It All' (2011) may not be a fan-favourite, as it's a little bit more understated, but it could be quite a nice audition piece.

Kelly is also not as ubiquitous as the likes of Adele and Beyoncé, and her style of singing isn't one that'll invite criticisms of emulation.

The other American Idol winner maybe?

Rudimental & Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night
A great song, which was a number one hit earlier this year and hammered on radio. It's a very belty song, which deals with a rocky relationship. It's also a fusion of drum n' bass, dance and soul.

Demi Lovato - Give Your Heart A Break
Demi has a MASSIVE voice and it's ultilized in this uplifting, catchy and melodic song, which is about enjoying yourself and letting go of pain.

Disclosure & Sam Smith - Latch
80s sounding, synth-ladden song which is beautifully sung by Sam Smith, who has a huge soulful voice.

These are three modern songs, which your friend can SANG and get their teeth stuck into.

Something fast might be a pleasant change.
  6. Already on the list. Shall check out the others.
  7. Good call. I'm thinking 'Beautiful Disaster'.
  8. Blank Page, by Christina Aguilera (or Sia). I adore it/them. The lyrics absolutely hit the spot. The Sia version crushes my soul, but the Christina version is better suited to a big singer. Take your pick....:

  9. Of course I've got 'Want Me' lined up for the final.

Perhaps a little Delta Goodrem? The often rumoured winner's single Born To Try? The recent Sitting On Top Of The World?

    Or this personal Delta favourite?

This Katharine McPhee track has quite the middle 8 / chorus on it as well!

  12. Anything from Ellie Goulding's Halcyon.

Pink - Who Knew or I Don't Believe You
Alicia Keys - Girl On Fire
Cheryl Cole - Promise This (acoustic)
    Maverick Sabre - I Need
    Robyn - Be Mine (acoustic)
  14. Thank you guys.

    She sent her list in.

It was, how shall I say this, disappointingly conventional.

    Both Adeles innit?
  16. Not quite but it may as well have been :-(
  17. Too late to suggest

  18. Already sorted.........

  19. Oh, duh. THAT "Want Me." In my head the song is called White Gal Ya(r)die...

This is what happens when I wander out of the PJ Song Contest and Eurovision threads... no sense is made.
