MORE Random Pop Thoughts

I feel I say this every few months/years but Alive 2007 is the greatest electronic album ever. I get dumbfounded every time I listen to it, still.

Ahhh this song just came to me after probably seven years of not thinking about it and God dammit I miss music like this. Just big ass soaring choruses, varyingly nasal vocals, that slight willingness to be corny in song and in video and that's cool lol jk xD, and et cetera like such as South Africa. When are we getting a documentary about the death of emo and millennial punk etc.?

that freaking "make it COUNT when I'm that one who's SELLING YOU OU-UT" is effervescent and not at all prepossessing as I remember it. Is this a tinge of joy? Gasp!

I feel like Chloe Moriondo is like... my little secret in the pop world. I've tried hyping up her new album, Oyster, in her thread to absolute crickets, and that's fine, but I've been absolutely rinsing it and the world is paying her dust.

To be fair, she isn't exactly reinventing the wheel in any way, but her new album nails my favorite kind of pop music: warm, glittery, emotional, late '90s synthpop vibes. The production sounds expensive and pristine, her vocals are sugary sweet, there's even an atmospheric drum-and-bass song because why the fuck not? My whole point is that she knows her way around a hook, this album is zero skips for me, and I'm shouting it out in this thread for a little promo:

Sorry to bring that up out of nowhere but I recently discovered that our pink overlord popped up here again, bringing up what's going on behind the scenes and giving me hope. I'll never learn a lesson isn't it.

An observation like yours, which I've had so, so, so, so, so many times for acts I've tried to highlight for years and I feel backstreetjoe's pain so much nn is why I remain convinced the forum is in dire need of new blood.

On the other hand, I'm very aware of my flawed reasoning in thinking that most of the potential newbies will be here to promote non-BPG acts and revive many dormant threads. I'm sure lots will instead flock to the bigger ones, perhaps sometimes bringing tired discourse and stan twitter behavior in the process, but... let me hope!!

I also remain conviced the subforums need to be reorganized. How? I don't know... I'm thinking of threads made in "Potential next big things" that are condemned to having low visibility. Sometimes, they don't even reflect the acts' success or growing momentum on younger (?) platforms, which the views on here prove. What does it say about the forum... I feel like I know the answer but there must be many more factors.

Does it boil down to me being a gen Zer who started going on forums at age 10, pretty much grew up through them, and refuse to acknowledge that they're dying? And that it makes me sad because they provide an experience that I consider to be much more vital and community based than most of what's popped up since their heydays? Am I just jaded by the state of social media in particular, making me look at earlier times through rose-tinted glasses?

I feel like I'm opening pandora's box and sound a bitsy pointed and frustrated... it's just been on my mind a lot lately.

(Oh and I've heard of Chloe by watching fashion content fff. Never dived into her music so... thank you for reminding me of doing this! Now I sound weird as heck yapping about all of the above ofjeofjseqp)

Oh, I feel you so much on this. I know there are plenty of us who are still interested in seeking out newer/upcoming/younger artists, but who are we kidding, Potential Next Big Things maybe gets 15% of the forum's regular traffic max. I also understand that there's SO much music coming out all the time that giving everything attention is nearly impossible.

Like you said, it's a complicated subject, and we're all getting older too (which apparently means we're all extra unique for still actively seeking out new music~). But yes, I agree. I love when friends on here tag me in threads, that automatically guarantees a listen from me. That's been a nice workaround so far. I'd do that for Chloe, but I genuinely have no clue if she's just under the radar or if people are just not into it dd.

I feel like the best way to get people into, or at least to discover artists, is to have them in the monthly charts/song contests, chloe moriondo for example has featured in both a few times, so that's a fair chunk of PJers who will be familiar with at least a few of her songs. I've said it before but that's also part of why artists like Chappell Roan and Rose Gray were firm forum faves before they gained a wider audience.

I do think it's a shame so many people just ignore the potential next big things sub-forum, I've definitely made a lot of fantastic discoveries there over the years and I like creating a thread when there's a new (or new to the forum at least) artist I really like. Though to be fair, there have been many artists over the years who started there, got a fair share of attention (in the forum and/or outside it) and eventually got moved to the main forum, I think all of those threads no longer being there makes that sub-forum seem less active/useful than it actually is. I do find it kind of amusing when forum members mention discovering a song or artist the forum has been raving about for months/years on X or whatever, like... she's been here all along. But I mean, plenty of people simply don't think of a music forum as a place to discover new artists/songs, but rather just somewhere to discuss their faves and pop music/culture in general, which is perfectly understandable.

As an aside, funnily enough this discussion made me realise chloe moriondo's Fruity was exactly the song/video I was trying to recall here a few months ago.

Yeah like you said I totally understand that it's harder to keep an eye on everything when life continuously throws stuff as us and priorities change. I'm also getting to a point where I have less time to devote to seeking out new music, so I'm (clumsily) trying not to put the blame on like, everyone fff. I empathize with that.

I've also found that tagging helps. In that sense, increasing the number of tags per post during the latest forum update was a welcome change!

Yeah I guess it's hard to admit that there are so many outlets to discuss all things music related now, and forums don't have the same pull anymore. Social media can grab your attention in a much quicker and flashier way, and I get the appeal there. But I wish there was much less of its worst components, that there was less slop to sit through to get to good "content", that lesser known artists could thrive without having to do all kinds of tricks to feed the algorithm as well... That's the idealist in me talking nn.

Your post got me thinking of this Music League I joined through another forum. I was part of two seasons which lasted throughout most of 2024 in total, and I made tons of discoveries that way. The experience reminded me of the monthly charts/song contests in here a lot. Activities like these remain a good way to share new stuff, I'm certain.

I think it can be tricky to do these over a significant period of time, as fun and low stakes as they are in nature, because... it can feel like a commitment? That's how I've felt a couple times, even though no one was forcing me to stay or anything nn.
