Movie comments, outbursts, quips and general chatter

The new Indiana Jones was surprisingly good after the dud that was the 2008 one, it's sad it bombed as hard as it did, though I read they needed to rake in at least $600m just to break even, which, when you consider Raiders of the Lost Ark's entire budget was $18m, is insane expenditure for a dormant franchise.

It did get me re-watching the old ones for the first time in years - we were never allowed to watch Temple of Doom because religious parents, so it's like a new film entirely to my eyes!

Just saw Gareth Edwards' 'The Creator' and really liked it. Visually, it's such a beautiful movie with great world building. Filming on real locations clearly pays off. Like in his other movies, Edwards knows how to do scale and spectacle. There are definitely some 'Blade Runner' and 'A.I.' influences, but it's refreshing to have a blockbuster not based on any book/comic/videogame.

The story could've used a little extra spark and the final act slightly veers into a generic direction. But no major issues.

For a sciencefiction movie, the special effects are some of the best of the last few years. And that on a (relatively) modest budget of $80 million. I hope it gets some love at the box office and at the Oscars in the smaller categories.

Watched Ken Loach’s The Old Oak on Wednesday. It’s probably one of those films that’ll get talked about more than it’s seen, but it’s definitely worth watching. I was completely absorbed.

Have watched Emily last night and really enjoyed it. It might not have been entirely historically accurate, but it was so vibrant, alive and sensual! Much like Emily’s work itself.

Some choice thoughts:
- Oliver Jackson-Cohen is the most beautiful man alive. WOOF. What a gorgeous, gorgeous man.
- Loved Emma Mackey as Emily, she was perfect, but I also couldn’t help but imagine Keira Knightley in the part? You just know she would have absolutely killed the role, say, 10 years ago.

Yes he is. Loved him in Mike Flanagan's TV shows.

Kathy Bates's Irish accent in The Miracle Club...

ec3

Is it as good as Christopher Walken’s in Wild Mountain Thyme?
There are so many bad Irish accents in cinema history.

Val Kilmer (The Ghost and the Darkness), Gerard Butler (PS I Love You) and Richard Gere (The Jackal) should have been tried at The Hague.
