Movie comments, outbursts, quips and general chatter

The Joker is one of three characters where two people have won an Oscar for playing it (along with Anita from West Side Story and Vito Corleone), too.

And unlike Anita and Vito, it’s unique in that the best performance of the character (Jack Nicholson) never even got nominated…

I was just looking at what's at the cheap seats and apparently my choices include Am I A Racist? and Reagan. Duality! I'm tempted to watch them both.

Incidentally I never finished the audiobook How To Be an Anti-Racist even though I found it to be very compelling because I couldn't get past Kendi's terrible narration where every sentence was emphasized in the exact same way. Might have to just get a hard copy dd.

Watched The End We Start From yesterday and caught a screening of Prima Facie tonight finally and Jodie Comer needs to get in an Academy conversation sooner rather than later, she's one of the best around.

Yeah she’s surely getting in when she gets the right role, esp considering she clearly has industry support having won an Emmy and Tony already. If The Last Duel hadn’t flopped she probably would have got in.

She’s in that bracket of “BAFTA-endorsed British actress with a growing international profile” that will almost always result in big awards attention when the right role comes along…

Watched Magnolia for the first time and oh my god how gorgeous it was. Julianne Moore you will always be famous.

April Grace is my Supporting Actress winner for 1999, though I would be happy with a Top 5 entirely comprised of Magnolia performances! Julianne makes my Top 10 (also in Leading for The End Of The Affair, which I recommend if you haven’t seen it).

All About Eve for me this morning

Bette Davis is just outstanding

Everyone is pitch perfect in that movie - I’ve seen people complain that Anne Baxter is too blatantly sneaky and untrustworthy from the start (when the script itself makes the character less obvious) but those of us who get it, get it… Eve needs to be an obvious wrong’un so that we understand Margot’s ego, pride, lack of self awareness (while claiming to be self aware).

An 11/10

Halfway through Gladiator I thought it was a pretty good movie and had no idea why it got a lukewarm reception from critics. Then came the monkeys.

The songs are really catchy as well!

There's nothing like watching Sudden Death after having a really shit day. Powers Boothe was such a villain, and the baddie wearing the mascot-outfit beating the crap out of van Damme and almost winning is the second most iconic thing in the movie - the first being Powers Boothe, obviously.

"What kind of lunatics are you?"

"The best kind!"

Die Hard, who?

Tubi US is about a hundred times better than the UK one. I've gone from Blithe Spirit, to a never heard of Irish dramedy, Widow's Peak, this afternoon.
Joan Plowright, Mia Farrow and Natasha Richardson... Talent
